Anthony Ray Lynn is an American football coach and former running back who now works for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL) as the team’s assistant head coach and running backs coach. Lynn was born on December 21, 1968. He played in the National Football League for six seasons, most of which were spent with the Denver Broncos. Lynn was a part of the Broncos teams that won two consecutive Super Bowls, namely Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII. However, he was only used in a backup capacity for both teams.

Following his retirement as a player, he took over as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2017 and remained in that role until 2020. Additionally, in 2016, he served as the interim head coach for the Buffalo Bills NFL team. Lynn played football at Celina High School and subsequently for the Texas Tech Red Raiders (1988–1991), where he was recognized as an All-Southwest Conference running back in the year 1990. Lynn has a height of 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 meters). A knee injury forced him to miss the rest of his senior year of high school, and scouts passed on him because of their fears about the ailment.

During his time in the National Football League, he played for the Denver Broncos (1993, 1997–1999) and the San Francisco 49ers (1995–1996). He was a journeyman reserve running back and special teams player. Because of recurrent neck stinger injuries, he decided to quit in the year 2000. Lynn was a member of the Denver Broncos teams that won the Super Bowl in back-to-back years (1997 and 1998).

After hanging up his cleats in the year 2000, he immediately joined the coaching staff of Denver as an offensive assistant and special teams coach. After that, Lynn took a position as the running backs coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 to 2004. He departed Jacksonville in 2005 after being moved to the work of special teams coach due to a shakeup in the coaching staff that head coach Jack Del Rio initiated.

After Bill Parcells announced his retirement as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys on January 26, 2007, Lynn accepted a position with the Cleveland Browns to fill the vacant running backs coach position. Lynn was given the role of assistant head coach and running backs coach for the New York Jets on February 1, 2012, under the direction of head coach Rex Ryan. Following Ryan’s departure in January 2015, Lynn was interviewed for the head coach position for the New York Jets.

While Lynn was the running backs coach for the Jets from 2009 to 2013, the team’s rushing attack averaged 137.0 yards per game, which was first in the NFL. In 2013, thanks mainly to Lynn’s contributions, Chris Ivory established a team-leading 833 yards on 182 carries. When it became clear that the New York Jets would not promote Lynn to the head coach role, he decided to accompany Rex Ryan to the Buffalo Bills, where he accepted the same position as the running back coach. During the 2015–2016 NFL season, the Buffalo Bills rushed for more yards than any other team in the league.

When Greg Roman was let go as head coach of the Bills on September 16, 2016, the Bills elevated Anthony Lynn to associate head coach and offensive coordinator. Lynn responded when asked about the identity he envisions for his offense: “I want to play both smart and physical football.” I want to be a force to be reckoned with down the field. We are going to play at a quicker pace to see if we can exert some pressure on the defensive unit. Put “execute.”

Lynn was successful in his first game as offensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals, leading his team to a 33–18 victory. After Rex Ryan was let go from his position as head coach on December 27, 2016, Lynn took over in an interim capacity. The Miami Dolphins had an interview with Lynn on the 30th of December, 2015, for the post of head coach. During that week, he was the fourth potential head coach candidate to be interviewed. On January 6, 2015, soon after Rex Ryan was let go from his position as head coach of the New York Jets, Lynn interviewed for the head coaching job with the New York Jets.

Lynn was a well-valued community member because of her extensive familiarity with the organization. In January 2016, Anthony Lynn was a contender for the head coaching position with the San Francisco 49ers. However, he withdrew his name from consideration before a decision could be made. Even though he did not accept a head coaching role in 2016, media expert Ian Rapoport mentioned Lynn as one of his prospects in a solid position to become a head coach.

Lynn was appointed head coach of the newly renamed Los Angeles Chargers on January 12, 2017, and the Chargers formally announced his employment as the new coach the following day. Lynn was appointed the next head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers on January 12, 2017, the same day owner Dean Spanos revealed that the Chargers would be moving from San Diego to Los Angeles. The move was initially scheduled to take place in 2020.

On January 13, 2019, one day after Lynn was officially hired, the Chargers announced the news on their official website. In the 56-year history of the team, Lynn was the first African-American ever to hold the position of head coach. In only his second season as head coach of the Chargers, Lynn guided Los Angeles to a record of 12–4 and helped the team qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2013. The Chargers eventually prevailed against the Baltimore Ravens in the wild-card round with a score of 23–17. However, they were knocked out of the competition by the New England Patriots in the divisional round with a score of 41–28. The Patriots went on to win Super Bowl LIII.

Lynn did not qualify for the playoffs in 2019, ending with a record of 5–11 to place last in the AFC West. Philip Rivers, who had been the starting quarterback for the Chargers since 2006, was let go by the organization during the upcoming summer. Rivers had been with the franchise since 2006. The Chargers selected Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert as the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft 2020. Herbert was picked to replace Rivers eventually.

Lynn was promoted to running backs coach with the news that Bobby Turner would not play for the 2022 team next season. In February of 2023, the Washington Commanders were permitted to interview Lynn for the offensive coordinator position on their team. This occurred due to the 49ers’ defeat in the 2023 NFC Championship Game. Together with his former wife, Cynda, Lynn is the father of two children: D’Anton and Danielle. On March 5, 2011, he tied the knot with journalist Stacey Bell in Dallas, Texas.

His son, D’Anton, played college football for the Penn State Nittany Lions and was signed by the New York Jets as an undrafted rookie after the 2012 NFL Draft. D’Anton is now playing for the Jets. Soon after, D’Anton was allowed to go free. Lynn supported his son’s choice to follow in his footsteps as a professional football player and educated him about the grueling labor required on and off the field to succeed in this line of business. On August 20, 2005, when the Cowboy’s training camp was in session, Lynn was the victim of a vehicle accident that included a hit-and-run driver.

After the end of training camp in Ventura, California, Lynn and Todd Haley, both offensive coaches for Bill Parcells, went out for pizza. When she and Haley crossed the street, Lynn was struck by a car Sergio Sandoval drove. Lynn was left with two collapsed lungs, injuries to his face and shoulder, and momentary paralysis in his lower body due to the accident. As a direct result of the event, he had four operations on his face, knee, and shoulder.

After less than two weeks of absence, Lynn returned to her coaching job. In the Verizon commercial aired during Super Bowl LIII in 2019, Lynn’s story was told, and he was allowed to meet the first responders who helped him throughout his recovery. The fact that the Chargers decided to keep head coach Brandon Staley despite a series of humiliating late-season errors is an indication of the lack of resources that the team has. This included squandering a 27-0 lead in the Wild Card round against the Jacksonville Jaguars, which led to their eventual loss by a score of 31-30.

After that disaster, Staley should have been let go, but the Chargers would have had to pay him and his whole staff to go, and then they would have had to recruit an entirely new group of people to work for them. That is different from how Spanos does business. While in high school, Kyle Shanahan worked as a ball boy for the Denver Broncos. It’s pretty unlikely that Lynn ever imagined he’d end up playing for that child. That child matured into an adult and contributed to establishing a culture in Santa Clara that pleasantly surprised Lynn and brought back fond memories of earlier Broncos teams.

According to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post, the Commanders have shown interest in interviewing Lynn, who serves as the associate head coach and running backs coach for the 49ers. From 2017 through 2020, Lynn served as the head coach of the Chargers, during which time the team had a record of 33-31. He has served as the offensive coordinator in two cities, the first in Detroit in 2021 and the second in Buffalo in 2016. After a lackluster 2022 campaign, the Commanders dismissed Scott Turner from his position as offensive coordinator.

Thomas Brown, Eric Studesville, Charles London, Ken Zampese, and Pat Shurmur are other names cited as possible contenders for the offensive coordinator position with the Commanders. The Broncos, in particular, have been terrible inside their division for some time now and will need this to alter in the very first place before they can even think about making a run at the playoffs, much alone a run at the title.

Lynn had a lot of trouble beating the Chiefs during his time in Los Angeles, but the Broncos haven’t been able to beat the winners of the Super Bowl since Peyton Manning retired, so his two victories are more than enough. Lynn’s teams could easily handle the Raiders, neutralizing quarterback Derek Carr and the many weapons he’s had at his disposal over the years. Carr is another challenging quarterback in the AFC West.
