Aric Almirola returns for the fourth season to drive No. 10 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford, his 10th NASCAR full-time race. He has three career NASCAR Cup series and won four NASCAR playoffs (2014 and 2018-20) this season for a new bid. His latest win came at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, and he also won the Daytona International Speedway 2021 Bluegreen Vacations Duel 1 race. From 2012-17, Almirola was previously full-time at Richard Petty Motorsports. Almirola has three Xfinity series of NASCAR and two wins of the World Truck Camping Series of NASCAR.

Aric Almirola has been racing, starting with go-karts since he was eight years old. After a few years in the locally modified open-wheel series, Almirola became one of the primary members of the Joe Gibbs Racing Driver Diversity Program in 2003. His first few years in the program have seen him compete in late model events.

Almirola got his first major NASCAR start in 2005 at the age of 21 in the Gander RV & Outdoor Truck Series. He started four in the first year and finished two top 10.

In 2006, Almirola was in Gander Trucks for Spears Motorsports for a full-time season. He still has a partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing and finished three top 10 that year. In 2006, he made his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut and made nine beginnings in the series for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Almirola made his NASCAR Cup Series debut in Las Vegas on No. 80 and Dale Earnhardt Inc. on No. 01 for five starts the following year. He finished 26th at the International Raceway in Phoenix He ran half the Xfinity races that year and “scored” his first NASCAR victory for Joe Gibbs Racing in the Milwaukee Mile. However, Almirola did not cross the finish line in the beginning, as JGR decided to put Denny Hamlin, regular driver of the car, back in the mid-race. Almirola qualified the race for his Cup duties for Hamlin. When Hamlin couldn’t reach the track in time for the start, Almirola began the race and was third when he was replaced by Hamlin. Hamlin has gone on to win.

Almirola was hired by DEI to share driving duties in Chevrolet No. 01 in 2007 and Chevrolet No. 8 in Cup series with Mark Martin. In 2008, he competed in 12 races and finished a top 10 in Bristol Motor Speedway. Almirola also leads his first rounds in the Cup series, three in Talladega and 53 in Martinsville.

Almirola started 33 Xfinity Series for JR Motorsports in 2011. Although he was winless in 2011, he finished seven top 5’s and 18 top 10’s in the fourth place in the season.

In 2012, Almirola returned to the Cup series, with Richard Petty Motorsports behind the wheel of famous No. 43. He finished 20th in points and finished with top 10s in two of the four final races, including fourth on the Martinsville Speedway.

Two spots improved in 2013, Almirola reached 18th with six top 10 finishes in 36 starts. His best performance was fifth in the New Hampshire race in July. He also started in the Xfinity Series, finishing ninth at Phoenix in March.

With an impressive victory at the Daytona International Speedway in July and a career-best 16th finish at that time, Almirola regarded 2014 as a success for his Richard Petty Motorsports team No. 43.

The win by Daytona led Almirola into the post-season, where he was the 12th seed of 16 contestants. After the first round he was eliminated and in his 36 starts, he completed the year with seven top 10s.

Almirola was shut down by over 200 points in 2016 from the post-season contest, a season during which his best finish in the Talladega Superspeedway autumn was 8th.

In 2017, Almirola competed in 29 of the 36 competitions after he was sidelined in a crash at Kansas Speedway in May when he recovered from a back injury. In a winless season, he finished fourth in the Daytona and Talladega super-speedways.

At the end of the season, Almirola left Richard Petty Motorsports to drive for Stewart-Haas Racing and had a break in the team’s No. 10 Cup Series start 2018.

Almirola posted career numbers in the top five (4), top ten (17), led (181), medium start (15,6), and average finish in his seventh full-time season in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (12.8). This led him into his first appearance in the 8th round – second place in playoffs – and to a career-leading fifth in the final.

Almirola did not do the same for the second season at SHR, finishing 14th in the 2019 Cup Series.

In 2020 Almirola will return to SHR No. 10 Ford Mustang, but after a shuffle within the organization, she will have a new crew chief. After three seasons Mike Bugarewicz moves over from teammate Clint Bowyer’s riding, replacing Johnn Klausmeier, who has worked with Almirola for the last two years. He’ll be paired with Team No. 14 and Bowyer.

Aric Almirola’s career is complete at Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), with the No. 10 Smithfield Ford Mustang rider enjoying his best years of carriage in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Since joining SHR in 2018, Almirola has made NASCAR Playoffs every season. Indeed, Almirola finished a career-best fifth in his first year with the organization, as a member of the 16-driver NASCAR playoffs, and advanced for the first time to the 8th round. On Oct 14 at Talladega (Ala.), Superspeedway won his second NASCAR Cup Series race on Oct. 14 in a season-long list of four top-five and 17 top-10 finings, 181 laps led, overwhelming all his previous one-season statistics.

It was difficult to match these numbers in 2019, but Almirola continued to perform. He has scored his second NASCAR Cup pole – and first SHR – at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Feb. 22. The pole represented Almirola’s strength in the competition, where his 10.5 average start in 8 full seasons was his best.

In terms of the top five, top ten and laps led, 2020 was Almirola’s career year. Six top-fives, 18 top-10’s and 305 laps were leading all seasons, each significantly improving its 2018 previous year’s highs.

Almirola spoke prophetically at his introductory press conference at the end of 2017 on his own expectations at SHR.

“There are two kinds in the world of athletes,” he said. “The athletes just want to participate in the show, and the athletes want to do the show. I’m in the second category. I want the pressure. I want the pressure. When it comes to the game-winning shot, I want a ball in my hands. I don’t want an excuse that my equipment doesn’t have to be where it needs to be. That’s the chance.”

Almirola has obviously taken advantage of his opportunity at SHR, but SHR co-owner Tony Stewart, a teammate with Almirola at Joe Gibbs Racing, saw him for a long time (JGR). Almirola and Stewart spent considerable time together between 2004 and mid-2007.

This story made the transition from Almirola to SHR smooth. Almirola had been competing with Richard Petty Motorsports for the last six seasons, piloting the iconic Ford No. 43. In his time with Petty, Almirola scored the first win in the famous No.43 since 1999 when he won the Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in July 2014 race. He also won a pole and won eleven top-five and 31 top ten.

But success peaks seemed to occur between too wide valleys and Almirola had a new chance with SHR. It wasn’t his first time to display his ability.

A native of Cuban descent, Tampa, Florida, Almirola started her racing career in go-karts at age 8. He took his talent to the national karting scene in 1998, after winning several races and local titles in and around his home state. He quickly became known and qualified for the World Karting Association at Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium before finishing fourth in the finish line.

At 16, Almirola graduated from open-wheel technology – 2750-pound racing cars with more than 700 horsepower. In 2000 he won the title of a rookie in two separate modified divisions – Modified Florida and Modified Southern Automotive Racing Association – while winning his first career win in Orlando (Fla.) Speedworld at Joslin Memorial 100, which defeated Florida’s top drivers.

In March 2002 Almirola moved from an open-wheel changeover to the Sunbelt Super Late Model Division, where he finished in the rookie classification. He continued in the 2003 U.S. Speedway Division, winning three poles in Lakeland, Florida, two poles in New Smyrna, Speedway, and one in the Bronson, Florida Speedway.
