The Arizona Coyotes are a National Hockey League (NHL) franchise with their home arena in Glendale, Arizona (NHL). Three WHA championships were won by the team when known as the Winnipeg Jets (1976, 1978, and 1979).

The Winnipeg Jets, a founding member of the World Hockey Association (WHA), first took to the ice in 1972 under the name of the Jets. Before the team had even played a single game in its inaugural season, it grabbed national attention by luring NHL star Bobby Hull away from the Chicago Black Hawks. Due to the historic purchase, the fledgling league gained instant credibility, which in turn led to higher salaries for all professional hockey players as NHL teams were obligated to do so in order to keep their best players from being snatched by WHA teams.

During their seven seasons in the WHA, the Jets became one of the league’s top teams, reaching the Avco Cup (league championship) finals five times and taking home three championships (1976, 1978, and 1979). To save its ailing WHA league, the NHL merged with it before the 1979–80 season, and the Winnipeg Jets were one of four WHA teams who made the switch to the NHL.

After dominating in the American Football League, the Jets struggled mightily in the NHL, failing to win a single game in their first five seasons. Even though Dale Hawerchuk steered the team to first-round playoff triumphs in both 1984–85 and 1986–87 (as well as a second-round loss to the eventual champion Edmonton Oilers), the Jets were unable to move farther in the postseason after that. Because of the growing costs of running a professional sports club, the small-market Jets went bankrupt in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1995, the franchise was sold to a group of Phoenix-area investors. Before the 1996–97 season, the team relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, and adopted the name Phoenix Coyotes.

To the surprise of many, the renamed Coyotes have made the playoffs each of their first four seasons in Phoenix, losing in the first round each time they’ve made it that far. In 2000, hockey icon Wayne Gretzky invested in the team as a part-owner, and he was named head coach in 2005. When Gretzky took over, the Coyotes finished dead last in their division, and he was forced to resign as soon as they filed for bankruptcy protection because of the team’s ongoing losses after moving to Phoenix.

Arizona Coyotes Biography/Wiki

Within two months, the NHL had acquired the bankrupt team.  It was a historic season for the Coyotes in 2011–12. That success was followed by a thrilling first-round playoff series win over the Chicago Blackhawks, in which five of the six games were decided in overtime, giving the team its first postseason series win since its migration from Winnipeg. Prior to losing in the Western Conference finals, the Coyotes won another series of play-offs.

The NHL sold the Arizona Coyotes to a new ownership group in 2013, promising to retain the franchise in the state. The team’s name was changed to the Arizona Coyotes in 2014 to better reflect its location outside of Phoenix and to better appeal to hockey fans throughout the state.

Robert Marvin Hull, Jr., better known as Bobby Hull, is a former NHL ice hockey player who played with the Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1957 to 1972. He was a dominant goal scorer in the history of hockey thanks to his swinging slap shot.

Hull began playing organized hockey with his father when he was 12 years old. After being placed on the Black Hawks’ negotiation list, he played amateur hockey and received financial aid from the team to help pay for his education. St. Catherine’s (Ont.) Collegiate School in 1957 to join the Black Hawks, where he first played center before moving to forward, was his last school stop. He was the NHL’s leading scorer in 1959–60 with 39 goals, and he scored 50 goals the following season, tying Maurice Richard’s NHL record.

During the 1965–66 season, Hull set a new record for most goals scored in a season (54), assists (43), and points (97). The nickname “Golden Jet” came about as a result of his blistering skating speed and devastating shooting ability. He was awarded the Art Ross Trophy three times (1960, 1962, and 1966), the Hart Trophy twice (1965 and 1966), and the Lady Byng Trophy three times (1965, 1966, and 1967) for his outstanding play and sportsmanship (1965). He was a key member of the Chicago Black Hawks team that won the Stanley Cup in 1961.
