Asuka, real name Kanako Urai, is a Japanese professional wrestler born on September 26, 1981. She is presently under contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and performs under the Raw brand name. She has won the WWE Raw Women’s Championship twice and held the WWE Smackdown Women’s Championship in the past. She formerly held the title of NXT Women’s Champion in WWE NXT, setting the record for the title’s longest reign at 510 days. Her aggressive wrestling style, which includes various kicks and submission techniques, has earned her a lot of notoriety.

She has been involved in various Japanese promotions, including SMASH, Pro Wrestling WAVE, and the Japanese Women Pro-Wrestling Project. She has successfully defended her title as SMASH Divas Champion twice. After becoming a fan of wrestlers like Keiji Mutoh, Satoru Sayama, Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Antonio Inoki, Akira Maeda, Nobuhiko Takada, Masakatsu Funaki, Volk Han, and Minoru Suzuki, Urai, who had previously worked as a graphic designer, decided to pursue a new career in professional wrestling.

On June 16, 2004, Urai debuted in professional wrestling under the name Kana. Her first bout was against Leona, held for the all-female company AtoZ. She worked at AtoZ for most of her professional life until making the unexpected decision to resign on March 19, 2006, citing chronic nephritis as the cause of her illness. Urai established her own graphic design company while she was gone from the ring for a while.

Urai returned to professional wrestling on September 22, 2007, after taking over a year-and-a-half hiatus. She began freelancing for promotions such as Ice Ribbon, JWP Joshi Puroresu, NEO Japan Ladies Pro Wrestling, Pro Wrestling Wave, and Pro Wrestling Zero1 while simultaneously forming the Passion Red stable in NEO with Nanae Takahashi, Natsuki Taiyo, Ray, and Yumiko Hotta.

Kana won her first professional wrestling championship on October 10, 2009, when she and Takahashi teamed up to win the NEO Tag Team Championship by defeating Hiroyo Matsumoto and Kyoko Inoue. This was Kana’s first title in the professional wrestling industry. They would keep the championship for two months when Ayumi Kurihara and Yoshiko Tamura could take it away from them on December 31, 2009. Kana announced that she was leaving Passion Red on the 24th of January, 2010.

Although Kana had appeared for Pro Wrestling Wave on a few occasions in 2008, she did not begin regularly working for the company until the latter half of 2010, when NEO Japan Ladies Pro Wrestling ceased operations. In 2011 Catch the Wave championship match, which took place on July 24, 2011, Kana prevailed against Ayumi Kurihara and became victorious. Kana and Kurihara won the Dual Shock Wave 2011 tournament on October 30 by claiming victory against Ran Yu-Yu and Toshie Uematsu. As a result of their success, Kana and Kurihara became the very first Wave Tag Team Champions in history.

When she and Kurihara held the tag team championship, Kana was also a member of Triple Tails with Mio Shirai.S. On February 1, 2012, Kurihara, Mika Iida, and Shuu Shibutani were inducted into the Triple Tails organization as formal members. After another four days, Kana and Kurihara were defeated by Ran Yu-Yu and Toshie Uematsu in the Wave Tag Team Championship match. The new iteration of Triple Tails was given the moniker White Tails on March 6 as a nod to Wave’s top heel alliance, Black Dahlia.

After Kana’s victory against Yumi Ohka in their singles match on November 27, she anointed herself the new “ace” of Wave and bragged about it. As the champion of Catch the Wave in 2011, Kana was awarded entry into the Wave Single Championship event on February 17. On that day, she defeated Mio Shirai in the semifinal match of the competition. Kana was eliminated from the competition on March 17 by Yumi Ohka, who won the event overall.

Kana and Mio Shirai won the Wave Tag Team Championship on April 21 after defeating Misaki Ohata and Tsukasa Fujimoto. This victory was Triple Tails.S’s first championship win overall. On July 7, they defended themselves against Fujimoto and Kyusei Sakura Hirota for the first time. Kana fought the soon-to-retire Ayumi Kurihara to a ten-minute time limit draw on July 12, the last event that the White Tails stable staged before the group’s dissolution. During this match, the White Tails stable presented their last event before the group’s dissolution.

Three days later, Kana and Shirai were unsuccessful in their second attempt to defend their Wave Tag Team Championship against Shidarezakura, which consisted of Hikaru Shida and Yumi Ohka. During the period beginning on September 1 and ending on October 6, 2013, Kana competed in the Dual Shock Wave event with Yumi Ohka. The duo was able to go all the way to the championship match of the competition, but they were ultimately defeated by Las Aventureras (Ayako Hamada and Yuu Yamagata) in a three-way battle that also included Muscle Venus (Hikaru Shida and Tsukasa Fujimoto). In the contest, Muscle Venus was also competing.

On June 25, 2010, Kana competed in the main event of Smash.4, however, she was defeated by Syuri and did not win her first match for Yoshihiro Tajiri’s new Smash organization. Kana exited the stage with a smile on her face after the battle and subsequently challenged Syuri to a rematch, which was confirmed to take place on June 30. On July 24, at Smash.5, the rematch took place, and Kana, who was a full-fledged villain, won the match against Syuri by submitting her in barely three minutes.

Kana wrote a manifesto for the Weekly Pro-Wrestling magazine, published on August 4. In it, she attacked the joshi puroresu community, claiming that it was full of wrestlers with no personality and bad attitudes and that they wrestled unrealistically. This was a part of the plan to get her over as the top heel. The story sparked a fight between Kana and wrestlers from the JWP Joshi Puroresu organization on August 30 at Smash.7, although it did not directly result in a matchup between the two groups.

After that, Kana and Tajiri started their rivalry, culminating in an intergender battle at Happening Eve on December 24. Tajiri emerged victorious from the contest. After suffering the defeat, Kana returned on January 29, 2011, as the captain of the Triple Tails stable with the Shirai sisters, Io and Mio. She gave herself the “Sekai no Kana,” which translates to “World Famous Kana.” After that, Kana continued to compete against people of the opposing gender. She was victorious against Jessica Love on January 30, 2011, and she teamed up with the Shirais to beat Tajiri, Ken Ohka, and Yoshiaki Yago on February 25. However, she was unsuccessful against Funaki on March 31.

Kana and former WWE performer Serena got into a fight in April when Serena said she referred to Kana as a brilliant “amateur” wrestler, even though Serena had previously been employed by the most prestigious wrestling organization in the world (WWE). In reaction, Kana promised herself that she would earn Serena’s respect. The first time Serena and Kana faced one other was on April 30 at Smash.16. During a six-woman tag team bout, Serena teamed up with Makoto and Syuri to beat the Triple Tails. During the fight, Serena pinned Kana with her finishing maneuver, the Spear.

The first singles battle between Serena and Kana took place on May 3 at Smash.17, Serena won with a spear and beat Kana. At the next event, which took place on June 9, Smash began a competition to determine who would become the very first Smash Diva Champion. Kana was victorious in her first-round match, which she played against Lin “Bitch” Byron. Kana earned a rematch with Serena in the tournament’s championship match after claiming victory against Syuri on the 11th of August at Smash.20. Kana won the first-ever Smash Diva Championship on September 8 by defeating Serena in the final match.

In her maiden defense of the Smash Diva Championship, which took place on November 24 at Smash.23, Kana was defeated by Tomoka Nakagawa. Kana successfully defended her championship by claiming victory over Nakagawa in a rematch on January 19, 2012, at We Are Smash. Kana’s second reign ended on the same day as her first defense, on February 19 at Smash.25, when Syuri defeated her for the championship. Afterward, the two long-time adversaries embraced and made peace with one another. The event took place on March 14 and was called Smash.

Kana and Ultimo Dragón defeated Mentallo and Syuri in a tag team match at last, the last event held by the organization before it ceased operations. The bout occurred during the company’s last event before it ceased operations. On August 3, 2011, it was announced that Kana would debut in the United States at the beginning of October. It was said that she would be working for the all-female promotion Shimmer Women Athletes on October 1 and 2 and for Chikara on October 7 and 8.

Kana was revealed in the early stages of her Shimmer debut on Volume 41 to ignore Sara Del Rey and Cheerleader Melissa’s greeting, therefore defining herself as a heel. Her Shimmer debut took place in Volume 41. After that, she won her first bout for the promotion against Mia Yim, and she ended up defeating her. In the latter part of the same day, Volume 42 featured Kana’s victory against Del Rey through submission. Cheerleader Melissa prevailed over Kana in a bout to decide the top challenger for the Shimmer Championship that took place the next day on Volume 43. Kana’s opponent was intended to be Cheerleader Melissa.

After Kana won her last bout of the weekend, which took place later that day on Volume 44, she shook hands with LuFisto after the match and congratulated him. The next weekend, Kana made her debut for Chikara. On October 7 in Burlington, North Carolina, she competed against and won over Jessie McKay in her maiden bout for the promotion. In the main event of a wrestling show the next day in Kingsport, Tennessee, Sara Del Rey beat Kana. Kana was scheduled to make her comeback to the Shimmer Women Athletes promotion on March 17, 2012, according to an announcement made by the company on February 19, 2012.

Kana returned on Volume 45 as a babyface and competed in a tag team match with LuFisto. However, the combination could not overcome Hailey Hatred and Kalamity, who won the match. In a singles match later that day, Volume 46 saw Kana’s loss at the hands of Mercedes Martinez. Kana and LuFisto came out on top in a tag team bout against Christina Von Eerie and MsChif the next day, which took place on Volume 47. In Kana’s last bout of the weekend, which took place on Volume 48, she prevailed against Kellie Skater.

Kana made her comeback to Shimmer on October 27, 2012, when she and LuFisto participated in the Shimmer Tag Team Championship challenge that was a part of Volume 49. Unfortunately, they were defeated by the Canadian NINJAs, who comprised Nicole Matthews and Portia Perez. In a singles bout that took place later the same night on Volume 50, Kana was ultimately beaten by Ayako Hamada. Kana became victorious in a one-on-one bout against Athena the next evening, on Volume 51.
