Paul Donald Wight II is an American professional wrestler, actor, and commentator who was born on February 8, 1972. Under his real name of Paul Wight, he is signed to All Elite Wrestling (AEW) as an in-ring performer and a commentator for the company’s web television show, AEW Dark: Elevation. He is most known for his stints with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) from 1995 to 1999 as The Giant and his tenure with WWE (previously the World Wrestling Federation) from 1999 to 2021 under the ring moniker (The) Big Show.

In 1994, Wight began his career. In 1995, he joined with WCW, where he was billed as The Giant (and was first introduced as “the son of André the Giant”) because to his huge size. He departed WCW in early 1999 to join the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). He is a seven-time world champion, having won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship twice, the WWF/WWE Championship twice, the WWE World Heavyweight Championship twice, and the ECW World Heavyweight Championship once between the WWF/WWE and WCW, making him the only wrestler to win all four belts. He’s also an 11-time world tag team champion, having won the WWF/World, WWE, and WCW World Tag Team Championships with a variety of partners on different occasions. He is the 24th Triple Crown and 12th Grand Slam winner in WWE history, having also won the Intercontinental, United States, and Hardcore championships. At WrestleMania 31, he also won the 60-man battle royal and the 30-man André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. Since 1995, he has headlined numerous pay-per-view events for WCW and WWF/WWE, including WrestleMania 2000, WWE’s main annual event.

Wight had a variety of jobs after school, including bouncing, bounty hunting, and answering phone calls. He met Danny Bonaduce in a live microphone amateur contest on his morning radio show while performing the latter for a karaoke firm. Wight was introduced to Hulk Hogan by Bonaduce. As part of a World Championship Wrestling (WCW) promotion for an upcoming show at the Rosemont Horizon, they had an impromptu basketball game. Wight’s ability to manipulate the audience impressed Hogan, who suggested him to World Championship Wrestling vice president Eric Bischoff. Wight attended the Horizon show and was invited into the locker room, where he met Ric Flair, Arn Anderson (his childhood hero), and Paul Orndorff, among others. Later, he encountered Bischoff there and made a deal with him. Wight had previously competed in one match, losing by countout against WWA Heavyweight Champion Frank Finnegan on December 3, 1994, at a World Wrestling Association show in Clementon, New Jersey.

Wight signed with WCW in 1995 and made his debut at Slamboree, where he was billed as the son of André the Giant (a claim that was later discarded) and went under the ring moniker The Giant as part of Kevin Sullivan’s Dungeon of Doom group. Wight made his professional ring debut against Hulk Hogan for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship at Halloween Havoc. After Hogan’s manager, Jimmy Hart, purposefully disqualified Hogan and then turned on him, he won the match. The Giant appeared on WCW Monday Nitro the next night, wearing the championship belt, and Hart, who later became The Giant’s manager, revealed that he had included a clause in the match’s contract that said that if Hogan lost by disqualification, he would lose his championship. Due to the circumstances surrounding the title change, WCW nullified it, and the championship was annulled.

In 1997, The Giant began a feud with nWo member Nash, who avoided the Giant at all costs, including cancelling their Starrcade fight. The two finally clashed in the ring in 1998 at Souled Out, with Nash hurting The Giant’s neck when he bungled his iconic jackknife powerbomb finisher. Nash was accused of deliberately dropping the Giant on his head in order to break his neck, according to the plot. The Giant rejoined the original nWo to fight Nash and his friends after Nash quit the nWo and founded his own stable, the nWo Wolfpac. The Giant won two additional Tag Team Championships with the nWo, once with Scott Hall and once with Sting as an unwilling partner (the match was signed before The Giant returned to the nWo). In the time between those two reigns, he lost his share of the titles to Sting in a singles match in which only the victor remained champion and had the option of choosing a new partner.
