As the second of four sisters, Bonnie Henry had the unique experience of growing up in a military household. Her father held the rank of major in the Canadian Army’s Lord Strathcona’s Horse, which is one of the three main armoured regiments in the Canadian Army. As a result of her father’s job in the army, she spent her childhood in a number of locations throughout Canada as well as in Europe. Henry first became aware of her ambition to become a physician when she was a little kid and visited her sister in the hospital. After having her appendix removed, her sister was resting and getting well.

Henry attended Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, from 1986 to 1988, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry. Between the years 1986 and 1990, she received her medical education at Dalhousie University, which is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After that, Henry attended San Diego State University to acquire a Master of Public Health degree in the field of epidemiology. In addition, she received her residency training in community medicine from the University of Toronto and her training in preventive medicine from the University of California – San Diego.

Bonnie Henry enrolled in the Royal Canadian Navy when she was in her third year of medical school. After she received her degree, she was sent to work as a medical officer at CFB Esquimalt, which is located close to Victoria in British Columbia. She served in the navy for over 10 years before leaving at the rank of lieutenant when she finally decided to retire. During the course of her military career, Henry served as a medical officer on the HMCS Annapolis, HMCS Provider, and HMCS Regina. In addition, she successfully completed specialized training to become a medical diver, ship’s diver, and flight surgeon.

Henry joined the Toronto Public Health Department as an assistant medical officer of health in the year 2001. During the SARS epidemic that occurred in 2003, she was in charge of directing the city’s operational response to the virus. In addition, she has spent time working in other countries to prevent the spread of infectious illnesses. She took part in the WHO’s campaign to eliminate polio in Pakistan and in the WHO’s efforts to contain Ebola in Uganda. Both of these campaigns were led by the WHO. In 2005, Henry made the move back to British Columbia so that he could begin working as a medical epidemiologist at the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control. She served in a variety of medical leadership posts within this company between the years 2007 and 2014. Henry was a member of the Canadian Pandemic Coordinating Committee while it was dealing with the H1N1 influenza pandemic in 2009.

In addition to that, she was in charge of the emergency preparations for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver in 2010. She served as the Deputy Provincial Health Officer for the province of British Columbia from 2014 to 2017. Since 2018, Henry has served as the health officer for the province of British Columbia. Additionally, the University of British Columbia has appointed her to the position of associate professor. Henry is the author of the book “The Definitive Guide to Viruses, Bacteria, Parasites, and Disease: Soap and Water and Common Sense” (2009). The name of the book is derived from a passage written by Sir William Osler. As a result of her leadership during the COVID-19 epidemic in the year 2020 in British Columbia, Bonnie Henry became a well-known figure across the province.

Throughout the crisis, she earned a reputation for being a guide who maintained her composure and compassion. Her policies were lauded as being among the most successful in the nation, while at the same time being recognised as being among the least restrictive. During Henry’s tenure as premier, British Columbia was a pioneer in the use of testing and social distancing. Additionally, it placed restrictions on the movement of health care personnel between long-term care institutions and made significant investments in contact tracking. Dr. Bonnie Henry has been serving in her present role as the Deputy Provincial Health Officer for the province of British Columbia since August of 2014. Prior to this, she held the positions of Interim Provincial Executive Medical Director of the BC Centre for Disease Control and Medical Director of Communicable Disease Prevention and Control as well as Public Health Emergency Management.

Previously, she served as the Associate Medical Officer of Health for Toronto Public Health, where she oversaw the Emergency Services Unit as well as the Communicable Disease Liaison Unit. In this role, she was accountable for both of those departments. She is Board Certified in Preventive Medicine in the United States, which demonstrates her expertise in both public health and preventive medicine. Dr. Henry participated in the WHO and UNICEF campaign to eradicate polio in Pakistan, and he also assisted the World Health Organization in its efforts to contain an epidemic of Ebola in Uganda. During the reaction to the SARS epidemic in Toronto in 2003, she was the operational lead for the response.

She served as the Chair of Immunize Canada in the past and is now a member of the Canadian National Advisory Committee on Immunization in addition to her role as an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. She is the author of the book “Soap and Water and Common Sense,” which is a manual for maintaining one’s health in a world teeming with microbes. She participated in a polio eradication effort in Pakistan in the year 2000, working with the World Health Organization and UNICEF. The year after that, she flew to Uganda to assist in the fight against an Ebola epidemic there.

She has also spent a significant portion of the past two decades working nationally and internationally to prepare for a pandemic influenza outbreak. She stated that some of the scenarios they only imagined before are very similar to the public health measures that were implemented during COVID-19, such as closing schools. Henry stated that she “never really thought we would need to be in a position to implement the things that we have,” noting that the virulence and transmissibility of COVID-19 have made it “a very, very challenging virus to contain.” Because there is neither a treatment nor a vaccine, there is no other choice but to implement stringent public health measures to keep people away from one another, which Henry acknowledges has been “very, very hard.”

Henry stated that it is always difficult to announce things such as business closures or school closures. However, these decisions are balanced by the enormous pressure to prevent situations similar to the ones that occurred in Italy and New York, in which health systems were overwhelmed by the sick and dying, and “everybody suffers.” Henry stated that it is always difficult to announce things such as business closures or school closures. She remarked, “We can find ways to help individuals monetarily, but we can’t bring them back if they’ve had a serious illness or if they’ve died.”

She said that public health professionals are still learning from the achievements and mistakes that other jurisdictions have had in dealing with COVID-19. She has daily conversations with the other public health officials, including Dr. Heather Morrison from Prince Edward Island. The Council of Chief Medical Officers of Health is led by Morrison, while Henry holds the position of vice chair. Henry said that although the specifics may vary from province to province, the authorities have been pursuing similar tactics to preventing the spread of the illness. She said that she believes that the efforts made by Prince Edward Island have “gone incredibly well,” which is a testimony to Morrison and her staff.

She said, “I have relatives on Prince Edward Island, and everyone there is saying they feel extremely secure. They’re all doing their part by remaining home and washing their hands.” In addition to her sister and two nieces and nephews, her mother and father also call Charlottetown home. “Now is the time when we have to keep holding together,” she said, “to get through this next phase, to make sure that we are not going to get a resurgence of the disease.” “We as a global community need to think about the impacts that we have on nature that allow these kinds of viruses to arise,” she added. Henry said with time, however, it has been her experience that collective memory fades and individuals tend to relax safety precautions such as handwashing or keeping away from others when we are unwell. “That’s a broader existential concern,” Henry said.

“We have this amnesia when we go through tragedies like this,” she added. “I’m optimistic that this one being such a large global one will push reset on some of these things.” Onnie was one of the co-founders of Hellas International, Inc., which is responsible for the creation of the most successful brand of Greek specialty foods in North America. In 2004, she was able to sell the firm to Krinos Foods with great success. After the completion of the sale of Hellas, she established DKH Company Advisors, which provides early stage business counselling services. After spending the previous ten years working with business owners, Bonnie decided to start her own company, GF Solutions, which is a gluten-free private label and contract manufacturing business situated in Methuen, Massachusetts.

Breads, pizza, and baked products are just few of the sectors that GF Solutions serves with its own patented formulas. These clients are located all across the country. At the moment, she is acting in the role of Managing Partner. Additionally, Bonnie is a member of the Board of Directors for a number of different food product firms. Bonnie earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York at Plattsburg, where she studied Business Administration and Communications simultaneously for her undergraduate degree. She was a Fellow at the Industrial Research Unit after completing her Master of Business Administration degree at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

For the last eight years, she has been a member of the judging panel for the annual business startup competition held at Penn. In 2015, she accepted an invitation to become a member of Les Dames d’Escoffier, which is an organisation made up of influential women working in the domains of gastronomy, oenology, and hospitality. Analysis of strategic issues, strategic positioning, creation of new distribution channels, management of product development processes, and driving operational outcomes are among our specialties.
