Carrie-Anne Moss, actor, pattern (born 21 August 1967 in Burnaby, BC). Carrie-Anne Moss is a prominent actor for cinema and TV. Her roles in The Matrix Trilogy (1999, 2003), and in the Marvel TV series Jessica Jones (2015–) are best known to her. In 1997, she was nominated for a Gemini Award to be a guest in the comedic drama Due South, received a Genie Award for her support performance in Snow Cake (2006), and won an independent Film Spirit Award for her presence in the famous neo-noir Memento by Christopher Nolan (2000). In Burnaby, British Columbia, Carrie-Anne Moss grew up with her mother, Barbara, who worked in musical theatre. As a young person, Carrie-Anne moved to the Magee Secondary School in Vancouver to take advantage of her dramatic department. She excelled in the choir of school, too. “It was in the 12th grade when one of the things most affected me,” Moss told Georgia Straight in 2015. “I just figured I’d get the musical lead. Well, I didn’t get it, I got the second lead, I was sad, my mother said something like “The character’s often better to support.” So I finished picking up myself and performing my part, and it was such fun and that prepares me for a lifetime of rejection.”

After relocating to Toronto at the age of 18, she started her career as a model. She worked extensively in Europe and began her acting training at Pasadena, California, American Academy of Dramatic arts. She played a role in both Canadian and US TV series, but her first recurrent role in the Spanish TV series of Dark Justice was played in Barcelona in 1991.

Dark Justice was successful in Spain and went to Los Angeles to capitalise on the market in North America. While Moss survived barely two years in syndication, he took shape with appearances in several high-profile shows in Los Angeles and Canada, including LA Law (1993), Baywatch (1994) and the Paul Gross Comedy Due South (1996). After The Matrice’s triumph, Moss performed at Christopher Nolan’s backward indie thriller Memento one of her greatest (2000). In her play with the exploited and manipulative bartender who takes advantage of the forgetfulness of the protagonist, Moss demonstrated a wide range of her dramatic skills and won a film independent spirit award. She also appeared in the Chocolat box office blockbuster (2000), for which she was nominated as part of the ensemble for a Screen Actors Guild Prize. Moss’s further film credits include the science-fiction theatre Red Planet (2000), the thriller Disturbia (2010), and the horror picture Silent Hill: Revelation (2012).

Moss’s credits include Marc Evans’ Snow Cake (2006) for whose sensual and mysterious supporting performance she was awarded a Genie Award. She also performed with the award-winning zombie comedy Fido (2006); the suburbia drama of Carl Bessai Normal (2007); Treading Water (2013) with Mexico-Canada co-production; Don McKellar with Compulsion (2013), the comedy of horror, with Heather Graham. In 2014, Moss performed in two significant Canadian productions: Elephant Song, Charles Binamé’s chamber play, Bruce Greenwood and Xavier Dolan, and Pompeii, an epic Torontin disaster that amounted to over $4 million at the Canadian box office, with a total worldwide amount of $100 million.

Moss spent much of her career in cinema in the late 1990’s and 2000’s but returned to a TV career in the 2010’s. She has performed repeated roles in the shows Chuck (2011-12), Donald Sutherland’s Crossing Lines (2014) crime series, and Humans sci-fiction series (2016). She also starred in the mobster series Vegas (2012-2013) against Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis.

In 2015, attorney Jeri Hogarth played the character of Moss in the renowned Netflix series Jessica Jones. The role was an achievement for female heroes of action as the first openly homosexual heroine of Marvel (the character is male in the comics). Other TV series in the universe of Marvel, such as Daredevil (2016), Iron Fist (2017) and The Defenders, have featured a Moss character (2017).
