Darryl Lynn Hughley is a stand-up comedian, author, and political pundit from the United States. Hughley is most known for co-hosting BET’s ComicView from 1992 to 1993, playing the title role on the ABC/UPN comedy The Hughleys, and being one of the “Big Four” comedians in The Original Kings of Comedy. He’s also the host of CNN’s D. L.
Hughley hosted ComicView, a stand-up comedy show on BET, from 1992 to 1993. He also starred as Will’s friend Keith Campbell, a comedian from Philadelphia, in the third season of Fresh Prince of Bel Air in 1993. He wrote, produced, and starred in The Hughleys, a television sitcom based on his real-life experiences growing up in an elite neighbourhood with his African-American family, from 1998 to 2002. He had a short-lived discussion programme on Comedy Central called Weekends at the D.L. Notes From The GED Section” in 2006. He’s a member of The Original Kings of Comedy and has appeared in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and as Turk’s brother on NBC’s Scrubs. He hosted the BET Awards in 2008, which he won. He also offered an emotional eulogy at the funeral of Bernie Mac, one of his closest friends and fellow King of Comedy.
Hughley works as a radio host as well. The D.L. Hughley Morning Show debuted on WRKS (now WEPN), a New York City-based urban adult contemporary station at the time known as 98.7 Kiss FM, on July 20, 2009. Former BET news reporter Jacque Reid was among his co-hosts. Hughley’s show, which aired from 6 to 10 a.m., pitted him against fellow “King of Comedy” Steve Harvey, whose nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show airs on WBLS (Kiss FM’s longtime competitor) in New York. Hughley’s show was supposed to be syndicated as well, but there was a pay dispute between Kiss FM’s parent company and the possible syndication business, so it never happened. Hughley moved on to other projects after Kiss FM pulled his show from their schedule in August 2010.
Hughley has two daughters, Ryan and Tyler, as well as a son, Kyle, with his wife, LaDonna. Hughley has spoken openly about his son’s Asperger condition.
Hughley admitted to having an affair early in his marriage and career in an interview with Angela Yee on Angela Yee’s Lipservice podcast on November 9, 2017. His mistress became pregnant and gave birth to a son, but his mother’s lover shook the baby to death.
