David Todd Christofferson, an American religious leader, and former attorney, was born on January 24, 1945. He now serves as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Christofferson was born in the state of Utah. Since 1993, he has served the church as a general authority. At this time, he has the position of being the tenth most senior apostle in the church.
Christofferson spent his childhood in Utah and New Jersey, and immediately upon graduation from high school, he went to Argentina to serve as an LDS missionary there. Sirica presided over the Watergate legal procedures shortly after Christofferson started working as a clerk.
After working as a court clerk, Christofferson enlisted in the United States Armed Forces and continued serving in the reserves for another eight years. Christofferson practiced law in several cities, including Herndon, Virginia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Washington, District of Columbia; and Nashville, Tennessee. Christofferson served as the volunteer chairman of the Affordable Housing organization in Nashville, Tennessee, and as assistant general counsel at NationsBank in Charlotte.
Christofferson worked as a law clerk for the Honorable John J. Sirica during the Watergate trials. They achieved the distinction of becoming the first people outside of the White House to listen to the Nixon White House recordings together. In a lecture he gave in June 2017 to professors and students at Christ Church College in Oxford, England, Christofferson stated, “Judge Sirica and I were shocked as we heard Nixon calmly ask” how much money it would take to keep the Watergate burglars silent about how much money it would take to keep them quiet.
The judge and I could not accept what we were hearing, nor did we want to believe what we were hearing. He handed me a letter suggesting we listen to the recording again and then rewind it. We had both, up until this point, held out hope that the president [of the United States] was not engaged, but it was now clear that this was not the case. On May 28, 1968, Christofferson wed Katherine Jacob at the Temple of the Salt Lake in Salt Lake City. They have five children between them and are parents.
Christofferson served in the LDS Church as bishop, stake president, and regional representative before being elevated to the position of general authority. Christofferson was called to serve as a public authority and a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy at the church’s general conference in April 1993. However, in his seventies, ferson served as the church’s executive director of the Family and Church History Department.

Only if Joseph Smith had been given the task of carrying out God’s creation and given the authority to do so by God could he have translated and published the Book of Mormon.

Smith, the brother of Joseph Smith, who had served as a missionary in 1830 when the Book of Mormon was considered the “whole missionary program.” Elder Smith narrated the story of Samuel H. Smith to Elder Christofferson. Elder Christofferson noted that he learned the phrase’s meaning through a discussion with a lecturer who was also an ordained minister in an evangelical Christian church. When this lecturer referred to “muscular Christians,” he was not referring to folks who “pumped iron” for three hours a day.
