David Todd Christofferson, an American religious leader, and former attorney, was born on January 24, 1945. He now serves as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Christofferson was born in the state of Utah. Since 1993, he has served the church as a general authority. At this time, he has the position of being the tenth most senior apostle in the church.

Christofferson spent his childhood in Utah and New Jersey, and immediately upon graduation from high school, he went to Argentina to serve as an LDS missionary there. After that, he attended law school at Duke University after completing his undergraduate degree in English literature at Brigham Young University (BYU). Christofferson worked as a law clerk for Judge John Sirica on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia after he graduated from law school in 1972. At the time, Sirica presided over a significant portion of the legal procedures that resulted from the Watergate crisis. Christofferson was one of Sirica’s law clerks.

After that, Christofferson worked as a lawyer in private practice before moving on to become an in-house counsel for NationsBank, which is now a subsidiary of Bank of America. Between 1972 and 1974, Christofferson started his career as a lawyer as a law clerk for the Honorable John J. Sirica of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Sirica presided over the Watergate legal procedures shortly after Christofferson started working as a clerk.

After working as a court clerk, Christofferson enlisted in the United States Armed Forces and continued serving in the reserves for another eight years. Christofferson practiced law in several cities, including Herndon, Virginia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Washington, District of Columbia; and Nashville, Tennessee. Christofferson served as the volunteer chairman of the Affordable Housing organization in Nashville, Tennessee, and as assistant general counsel at NationsBank in Charlotte.

Christofferson worked as a law clerk for the Honorable John J. Sirica during the Watergate trials. They achieved the distinction of becoming the first people outside of the White House to listen to the Nixon White House recordings together. In a lecture he gave in June 2017 to professors and students at Christ Church College in Oxford, England, Christofferson stated, “Judge Sirica and I were shocked as we heard Nixon calmly ask” how much money it would take to keep the Watergate burglars silent about how much money it would take to keep them quiet.

The judge and I could not accept what we were hearing, nor did we want to believe what we were hearing. He handed me a letter suggesting we listen to the recording again and then rewind it. We had both, up until this point, held out hope that the president [of the United States] was not engaged, but it was now clear that this was not the case. On May 28, 1968, Christofferson wed Katherine Jacob at the Temple of the Salt Lake in Salt Lake City. They have five children between them and are parents.

Christofferson served in the LDS Church as bishop, stake president, and regional representative before being elevated to the position of general authority. Christofferson was called to serve as a public authority and a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy at the church’s general conference in April 1993. However, in his seventies, ferson served as the church’s executive director of the Family and Church History Department.

Even th his time in this post, he participated in talks with Jewish officials over regulations on temple labor for Holocaust victims. The conversations resulted in the church announcing that its members should only conduct such temple work for family members. During this time, he was also participating in the negotiations. When the church finished digitizing the Freedman’s Savings Bank Records, he was serving as the department head at the time.

Christofferson was sustained as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on April 5, 2008, during the solemn assembly session of the church’s general conference. This session occurred at the same time as Thomas S. Monson was sustained as church president. Others revere Christoffersonchurch members for his roles as a prophet, seer, and revelator due to his membership in the Quorum of the Twelve.

Elder Christofferson, while addressing missionaries and new mission leaders at a devotional held at the Provo Missionary Training Center as part of the 2023 Seminar for New Mission Leaders, expressed gratitude to the Prophet Joseph Smith for his incomparable achievement in translating and publishing the Book of Mormon. He did this while speaking to the group during the 2023 Seminar for New Mission Leaders.

On Thursday morning, 6,812 new graduates were sent out into the world by Brigham Young University with the challenge to make good decisions, maintain that capacity for others, and establish an inclusive Zion. The annual graduation exercises were held in the Marriott Center, packed to capacity with more than 19,000 guests who came under clear blue skies. After the leaving President of BYU, Kevin Worthen addressed the audience with a message regarding exclamation marks; the audience gave him a thundering, minute-long standing ovation to punctuate his tenure.

Elder D. Todd Christofferson, a member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which supports BYU, delivered the graduation speech. Elder Christofferson is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Brigham Young University. Samuel Benson, a staff writer at Deseret News, spoke to the graduating students as the graduation speaker. He challenged those who had just graduated to encourage the freedom of choice both in their own lives and the lives of others.

Since the 5th of April in 2008, Elder Christofferson has been serving in his capacity as an Apostle. Before he was called, he held the positions of Stake President, Area Seventy Member, Regional Representative, and Presidency of the Seventy. He also served as a Regional Representative. He went to Argentina when he was younger to work as a missionary there.

The Burma Hills Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Accra, Ghana, performed the song “God be with You” after their worship gathering on February 26, 2023. The meeting was presided over by Elder D. Todd Christofferson, who was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Elder Christofferson, who had just finished a trip to the Africa West Area that lasted for 12 days, received a proper farewell from those present here. He told them, “You are a beacon of light that shines forth,” and they took his words seriously. “I pray that you experience the joy God has for you in this life.”

The 15th of February began Elder Christofferson’s travel to Africa. His wife, Kathy, Elder Paul V. Johnson of the Presidency of the Seventy, and Elder Johnson’s wife, Jill, were there to accompany him. Members of the Africa West Area Presidency, President S. Gifford Nielsen, a General Authority Seventy, and Wendy Nielsen, President Nielsen’s wife, assisted Elder Christofferson throughout his teaching and training tours across Africa West.

Elder Christofferson had a prior encounter with Ghana’s current President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in 2019, and their meeting was one of the highlights of this trip. They addressed the importance they placed on education and went through the BYU Pathway International and Gathering Place programs in their conversation.

President Akufo-Addo stressed the importance of our connection with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, saying, “We value our relationship with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I hope it will continue to grow.” “We will do everything in our power to ensure that everything your Church does here in Ghana is met with great success,” While Elder Christofferson and the other Church officials were in Ghana, they all went to the Accra Ghana Temple together. The other active Temple in West Africa is located in Aba, Nigeria, while the Accra Temple is one of two in operation in the region.

In the Africa West Area, nine Temples have been declared, are in construction, or are already operational. On January 11, 2004, the Accra Temple was officially dedicated. Elder Christofferson noted that the early Church missionaries placed significant emphasis on the Book of Mormon because they saw it as incontrovertible evidence of the Prophet Joseph Smith’s calling and the supernatural work of God. Only if Joseph Smith had been given the task of carrying out God’s creation and given the authority to do so by God could he have translated and published the Book of Mormon.

Elder Christofferson related the story of Samuel H. Smith, the brother of Joseph Smith, who had served as a missionary in 1830 when the Book of Mormon was considered the “whole missionary program.” Elder Smith narrated the story of Samuel H. Smith to Elder Christofferson. Elder Christofferson noted that he learned the phrase’s meaning through a discussion with a lecturer who was also an ordained minister in an evangelical Christian church. When this lecturer referred to “muscular Christians,” he was not referring to folks who “pumped iron” for three hours a day.

Elder Christofferson remarked, “Disciples who can endure and do hard things, who can meet and overcome challenges with their faith in Jesus Christ.”An additional doctrine that President Nelson preached was that since Christ triumphed over this fallen world, humans can win over this “sin-saturated, self-centered, and often exhausting world.”On the 21st of February 2023, the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, sent his warmest greetings to Elder D. Todd Christofferson.

Invited to a conference at Accra, Ghana’s Jubilee House, also known as the Presidential Palace, was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Gifford Nielsen, a General Authority Seventy, Elder Alfred Kyungu, a General Authority Seventy, and a counselor in the Africa West Area Presidency, were also present. During his trip to the Africa West Area, which will last for 12 days, Elder Christofferson is now in Ghana.

President Akufo-Addo was elected to the presidency for the first time in 2017, and he met with Elder Christofferson for the first time in 2019. Elder Christofferson sent his congratulations to him on being re-elected to his position. This reunion occurs during a tremendous expansion period for the Church in Ghana. Over 101,000 Ghanaian nationals are now members of the Church, which has 353 congregations throughout the country. Membership in the Church in Ghana started more than 45 years ago in 1978.
