David Pilkey Sr. and Barbara Pembridge Pilkey welcomed their son Dav Pilkey into the world on March 4, 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio. Cindy is the only sibling he has that is older. Both attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia were identified in him while he was in elementary school in Elyria, Ohio. Pilkey had a lot of detentions for his antics in class, so he spent a lot of time sitting at a desk in the school corridor. There, he came up with the idea for the character Captain Underpants.

In a national competition for student writers, Pilkey submitted his first novel, titled World War Earned, and won first place in the category corresponding to his age. The prize consisted of the award and the book’s publication in 1987. During his time working at Pizza Hut, he acquired the peculiar spelling of his first name. The letter “e” was left off on his nametag at the restaurant. The name is pronounced “Dave,” even though it is written “Dav” (rhyming with save).

After relocating to Washington, he met the woman who would become his girlfriend, Sayuri, a professional pianist and the proprietor of his preferred Japanese sushi restaurant. After some time, in 2005, Dav and Sayuri married each other. Pilkey launched an interactive version of the Captain Underpants website between 2006 and 2009. Koji Matsumoto, a sushi chef, was a friend of his and created numerous songs for it. In addition, you can find them on the Super Silly CD o’ Fun that is included in the Captain Underpants box set. Even though the website is no longer updated, all the songs may still be found on YouTube.

Pilkey put his literary career on hold for a few years to take care of his terminally sick father, but as of the 19th of March in 2010, he has signed a contract with Scholastic to publish four new novels. Carroll O’Connor is the creator of “The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, Kung-Fu Cavemen From the Future,” a definitive book initially published in August of 2010 and made available. In the early 1990s, Dav Pilkey published a series of children’s books about a blue dragon intended for beginning readers. Among the books that are part of the series are those titled “A Friend for Dragon” (1991) and “Dragon’s Fat Cat” (1992). In the middle of the 2000s, a television series based on Dav Pilkey’s novels and used Claymation (a kind of animation involving clay figurines) debuted on television.

After writing the dragon novels, Pilkey went on to write the Dumb Bunnies series, which he did so under the moniker Sue Denim. In those tales, Poppa, Momma, and Baby Bunny get into mischievous misadventures, such as having lunch in a car wash or bowling in a library. The Dumb Bunnies (1994), The Dumb Bunnies’ Easter (1995), and Make Way for Dumb Bunnies are some of the titles that were released in this series (1996). Students in elementary and middle school are the target audience for Dav Pilkey’s hilarious Captain Underpants book series.

The superhero Captain Underpants is one of the characters that George and Harold create for the comic books they publish. George and Harold discover a magical ring in the first Captain Underpants novel, published in 1997 and titled The Adventures of Captain Underpants. They use the ring to hypnotize their cruel school headmaster, Mr. Krupp. When Mr. Krupp is under hypnosis, he transforms into Captain Underpants. Other books in the series include “Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants” (published in 2000), “Captain Underpants and the Preposterous Plight of the Purple Potty People” (published in 2006), and “Captain Underpants and the Tyrannical Retaliation of the Turbo Toilet 2000” (published in 2000).

2017 saw the release of the animated feature film Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. Between 2018 and 2020, an animated television series titled The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants was shown. In addition, Pilkey authored several spin-off graphic books, the most notable of which are The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby (2002) and Super Diaper Baby 2: The Invasion of the Potty Snatchers (2004). (2011). Within the confines of the Dog Man series, George and Harold concoct a heroic figure who is equal parts canine and human to combat evil. The graphic books include Mothering Heights (2016), Grime and Punishment (2020), Lord of the Fleas (2018), Dog Man (2016), Dog Man and Cat Kid (2017), and Lord of the Fleas (2017). Cat Kid and a couple of the other characters from Dog Man each got their graphic books thanks to author Dav Pilkey.

Cat Kid Comic Club (2020), Cat Kid Comic Club: Perspectives (2021), and Cat Kid Comic Club: On Purpose (2022) were some of the titles that were featured (2022). Scholastic Publishing Company and Pilkey Reached a Mutual Agreement in 2021 to Cease the Distribution of Another Spin-Off Title, “The Adventures of Ook and Gluk: Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future” (2010). Pilkey has apologized for the fact that the definitive book mistakenly contains racist images of individuals of Asian descent. The Ricky Ricotta book series was written by Pilkey, although he did not do the illustrations. Ricky Ricotta is a solitary mouse who becomes friends with a robot, and the two end up saving the world. Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot is the series’ first episode (2000).

Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot vs. the Mecha-Monkeys from Mars published in 2002; Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot vs. the Stupid Stinkbugs from Saturn was published in 2003; and Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot vs. the Naughty Nightcrawlers from Neptune was published in 2004. Other books in the series include these (2016).In 2021, Dav Pilkey was named PW’s Person of the Year for 2019, maintaining his outstanding sales achievement from previous years. Pilkey had three of the top 25 best-selling print books of the year overall and five of the top 25 best-selling print books on the children’s list. The tenth and most recent book in his Dog Man series, Mothering Heights, was the year’s best-selling book, with sales coming close to 1.3 million copies.

In general, juvenile fiction sales performed well in the previous year, registering a 9.6% gain from a year earlier among retailers that report their sales to NPD BookScan.American Marxism, the most recent work by conservative radio and Fox News personality Mark R. Levin, which has sold well over a million copies, came in at position number two on this list. This is probably an indicator of a shift in reading patterns since it was the only book of political nonfiction to make the overall top 25.

Other notable bestsellers this year included Charlie Mackesy’s The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, which was named Barnes & Noble’s 2019 Book of the Year and sold more than 120,000 additional copies in 2021 than it did in 2020, and The Hill We Climb by Amanda Gorman, which was the poem read at the inauguration of President Joe Biden. It was the only poetry title to crack the top 25, selling nearly 552,000 copies. Both of these titles were read at the inauguration of President Joe. This year, just two books have sold more than one million print copies, but last year, seven novels did so, including A Promised Land by Barack Obama, which sold more than 2.5 million copies.

But in 2021, Pilkey and his publisher did a sudden about-face, removing a book from the series from sale and ceasing its production. The text in question was titled The Adventures of Ook and Gluk: Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future. The decision was made only a few days after the killings in Atlanta that took place at massage establishments. These shootings were widely and flimsily blamed on anti-Asian animus. The petition on Change.org that claimed the book published in 2010 perpetuated racist stereotypes was the immediate impetus for the decision to take this course of action. The petition cited that the character of Kung Fu Master Wong was depicted with evil eyes and that the book featured punny riffs on Chinese proverbs.

The first book in the Cat Kid series was released in December 2020 to widespread acclaim, garnering praise from publications such as Publishers Weekly (PW), which hailed it as “irreverent, laugh-out-loud funny” and “a heartfelt celebration of coming into one’s own as an artist, with all its frustrations and joys.” In addition, readers are enjoying the series, as Scholastic claims that more than 4.5 million copies of the book have been sold in North America alone since the introduction of the series in December 2020.

In sharp contrast to 2019, when Pilkey embarked on his sold-out Do Good arena tour, which contributed to his being named Publishers Weekly’s 2019 Person of the Year, he has been holed up in his studio in Japan writing only on the Cat Kid novels since the pandemic lockdowns started. Nonetheless, during the autumn of this year, Pilkey could interact with his readers by participating in Scholastic’s “Bark to School” campaign.

Students were given a unique look at the processes that go into the creation of graphic novels by author Dav Pilkey via the use of a film that gave them a tour of the studio where he works. In addition, as a component of the campaign, Pilkey worked in conjunction with Scholastic Book Fairs, independent booksellers, and the non-profit literacy organization My Very Own Library to donate thousands of free copies of Cat Kid Comic Club to students living in underserved communities all over the United States.
