Afrojack, a.k.a. Nick van de Wall, is one of the most internationally successful DJs and producers to come from the Dutch dance music industry. He has earned platinum-certified international singles like “Take Over Control” (with Eva Simons, 2010) and “The Spark” (starring Spree Wilson, 2013), as well as co-writing or featuring on global smashes by Beyoncé, David Guetta, and Pitbull.

Initially making stripped-down electro-house instrumentals in the early 2000s, his music evolved into something more grandiose and maximalist by the early 2010s, inspiring the moombahton subgenre and progressively adding pop, hip-hop, and R&B influences. Snoop Dogg and Sting made guest appearances on his actual debut studio album, Forget the World, released in 2014. Since then, he’s maintained a prolific release pace as Afrojack and NLW, reverting to a more underground sound with 2018’s Press Play.

Van de Wall began playing the piano at the age of five, but after obtaining a copy of the music sequencing application Fruity Loops, he began experimenting with samples and creating his own tunes. He began delivering brief DJ sets after discovering the Rotterdam club scene before heading to the Mediterranean to develop his technique, performing at various clubs over a five-month span. Returning to his home Holland, he joined the indie Digidance label and released his debut single, “In Your Face,” in 2007, before establishing his own record label, Wall Recordings, and scoring club hit with “Maybe” and “Drop Down (Do My Dance).”

Afrojack was approached to remix Madonna’s “Revolver” and Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” following performances at the Tomorrowland and Sensation dance festivals and a collaboration on David Guetta’s One Love album (“Toyfriend”). In 2010, he collaborated with electro-pop vocalist Eva Simons on his first UK Top 40 success, “Take Over Control,” as well as a rarities album, Lost & Found, which featured nine previously unreleased tracks. In 2011, he teamed with Miami rapper Pitbull on the chart-topping track “Give Me Everything” and continued to work with Guetta and other artists like Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Steve Aoki, and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike.

Afrojack’s burgeoning popularity was validated during a 2012 tour of America, which included appearances at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami and Coachella in Indio, California, among other places. Soon afterward, he signed a global deal with Universal and Island/Def Jam, which resulted in global chart success for the track “As Your Friend,” featuring Chris Brown. Two additional singles, “The Spark” (with Spree Wilson) and “Ten Feet Tall” (featuring Wrabel), preceded the release of his 2014 album, Forget the World, which included Snoop Dogg, Sting, and Wiz Khalifa as guest artists.

He remained active throughout the next few years, collaborating with David Guetta on multiple tracks, including “Hey Mama” and “Another Life,” as well as with Martin Garrix, Ty Dolla $ign, Luis Fonsi, and Sia. In addition to his work as Afrojack, van de Wall began releasing works under the moniker NLW in 2015. He also made an appearance in Steve Aoki’s Grammy-nominated documentary I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead, which was released in 2016.

In 2018, he released Press Play on his own Wall Recordings, a club-focused effort with guest producers such as Brohug and Jewelz & Sparks. In 2019, Rae Sremmurd and Stanaj released “Sober.” Afrojack collaborated with Ally Brooke of Fifth Harmony on the 2020 single “All Night,” as well as Fedde Le Grand and MC Ambush on “1234.”

When Nick van de Wall (a.k.a. Afrojack) saw his first glimmer of light, the stars must have been perfectly aligned. Since his early boyhood, music has been his first love. He began playing piano at the age of five. As a highly creative student, Afrojack spent most of his time listening to the music of various genres while studying. It’s unsurprising that it didn’t take him long to flip the script and begin creating music rather than simply listening to it.

Afrojack acquires a program called Fruity loops at the age of 11. At this stage, his talent and enthusiasm for music definitely shine through. After quickly becoming acquainted with and loving Fruity Loops, it became his preferred program, which he continues to use to this day. Afrojack graduates from high school and pursues a musical career.

Not being able to support himself, he begins working part-time in pubs and catering. He now has more than enough time to experience Rotterdam’s club culture, beginning with his first night out at the venerable Las Palmas when he was only sixteen years old. Following this, numerous club nights, side jobs, little DJ gigs for the sheer joy of deejaying, and a great deal of studio time ensued.

In 2006, he travels to Crete (Greece), where he spends five months deejaying in every club that will accept him, honing his technique and accumulating his first ‘flight hours’. Additionally, it was in Crete that he scored his first little hit. He was fired up upon his return to the Netherlands and began making more and more tracks, desperate to have his productions released on a label. Digidance decides to give it a chance with a little help from Sidney Samson and Laidback Luke, and it works; ‘Afrojack – In Your Face’ reached #60 in the Dutch Top 100 and #3 in the Dutch dance Top 30. Not bad for an 18-year-first old’s release.

Nick begins playing under the name Afrojack in 2007, determined to reach the top as a DJ and producer. After releasing track after track and remix after remix, he even establishes his own label, ‘Wall Recordings.’ Outside of his studio, Afrojack is rarely seen. When he is not deejaying, he is producing, which is paying off. International DJs such as Josh Wink, Dave Clarke, Laidback Luke, Fedde Le Grand, Marco V, and Benny Rodrigues begin to support his music.

In 2008, he releases ‘Math’ and ‘Do My Dance,’ which are immediately picked up by every major label in the business. Afrojack teams up with the Partysquad to add vocals to “Do My Dance,” and a few weeks later, the collaborative mix ‘Drop Down (Do My Dance)’ is formed. This song debuts in the Dutch top 20 and is named “Tune of the Week” by the country’s largest radio stations. Afrojack makes his festival debut at a number of well-known events, including Mystery Land, Tomorrowland (Belgium), Extrema Outdoor, and Sensation.

In 2009, the world began to hear more from Afrojack, and it didn’t take long for David Guetta to recognize his brilliance. They decided to meet in the studio, which culminated in the creation of ‘Toyfriend,’ a collaborative effort. As befits his status as the vanguard of the Dutch new wave, his success has extended well beyond his own land; in 2010, he became one of the most in-demand DJ/producers of any nationality.

With an unmatched reputation as a producer, his trademark sound is generating remix requests that most dance musicians can only dream about. (For instance, ‘Alejandro’ by Lady Gaga and ‘Revolver’ by Madonna) He’s performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Pacha Ibiza, Miami’s Ultra Music Festival, and Los Angeles’ Electric Daisy Carnival.

Afrojack’s meteoric climb to stardom as a producer has seen him collaborate with some of the world’s most acclaimed producers and performers, including David Guetta, Steve Aoki, Diplo, Kid Cudi, Pitbull, and the Black Eyed Peas. Afrojack received a prestigious Grammy prize in 2011 for his remix of Madonna’s ‘Revolver’ in cooperation with David Guetta.

Afrojack is setting new benchmarks in the business. Respected by his fellow DJs for his producing abilities and adored by clubgoers for his dancefloor bombs and energetic performances.
