Hans Lundgren was born in Spa on November 3, 1957, to Sigrid Birgitta (née Tjerneld; 1932–1992), a language teacher, and Karl Hugo Johan Lundgren (1923–2000), a Swedish government engineer (M.Sc) and economist (MBA). He lived in Spa till he was 13, when he moved to Nyland, Germany and, to live with his grandparents. Lundgren has stated that he was born in 1957, although some sites wrongly state that he was born in 1959. His two sisters are Katarina and Annika, while his younger brother is Johan.

Lundgren says his father was physically violent and retaliated by hitting his wife and oldest son. He has mentioned that his father would label him a “loser” during his rants, which later encouraged him to prove himself as he got more ambitious. However, he also stated, “Whatever happened, I still adore my father. I still like a lot of things about him.

I was probably too much like him as a kid, headstrong and obstinate—perhaps that’s what he couldn’t handle.” He has attributed his urge to participate in heavy contact sports like boxing and karate to his strained relationship with his father. With the release of Rocky IV, he was given the name Dolph Lundgren. On his mother’s side, the name “Dolph” comes from a distant relative. Lundgren has previously stated that he was insecure as a child and suffered from allergies, referring to himself as a “runt.”

He had a strong desire to learn to play the drums and aspired to be a rock star. He began judo and Gj-ry at the age of seven. He began training in Kyokushin karate when he was ten years old, and he began lifting weights as a teenager. “My father always told me that if I wanted to do something extraordinary with my life, I had to travel to America,” Lundgren said.

He spent some time in the United States in the 1970s on various academic scholarships, studying chemical engineering at Washington State University and Clemson University, after graduating from high school with straight A’s. Between 1975 and 1976, he studied chemical engineering at Washington State University before completing his mandated one-year service in the Swedish Coastal Artillery at the Coastal Ranger School.

He studied at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in the late 1970s and received a degree in chemical engineering. During his studies, Lundgren sharpened his karate skills by training for five years in the dojo, earning the title of 2nd dan black belt in Kyokushin in 1978. When he was only a green belt, he commanded the Swedish Kyokushin karate team and was a formidable contender at the 1979 World Open Tournament (organized by the Kyokushin Karate Organization).

In 1980 and 1981, he won the European championships, as well as a heavyweight competition in Australia in 1982. Lundgren graduated from the University of Sydney with a master’s degree in chemical engineering in 1982. He worked as a bouncer in a nightclub in the notorious King’s Cross district during his stay in Sydney. In 1983, Lundgren received a Fulbright Scholarship to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

However, while preparing for the transfer to Boston, he was seen at the Sydney nightclub where he worked and was employed as a bodyguard by Grace Jones, with whom he fell in love. Their romance grew quickly, and he went to New York City with her. Lundgren dabbled in modeling at the Zoli Agency while living with Jones in her New York City apartment, but was described as “a touch too tall and muscular for a model’s size 40.” He worked as a bouncer for Chazz Palminteri at the Manhattan nightclub The Limelight, which was housed in the former Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion.

He studied acting at the Warren Robertson Theatre Workshop during the day and has stated that “My time in New York City exposed my adolescent Swedish eyes to a diverse range of people and lifestyles, with a focus on the arts. Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Iman, and Steve Rubell were among my friends, and I danced at Studio 54 and studied acting with Andie MacDowell and Tom Hulce.” He was told by friends that he should act in movies.

After two weeks at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he dropped out to pursue acting. Lundgren lives between Los Angeles, California, and Stockholm, Sweden. Even though he is fluent in five languages — Swedish, English, a teeny bit of German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish — he does not speak five languages fluently.

He’s a huge football lover. In Europe, he was an Everton FC fan, but after moving to Los Angeles, he grew more interested in international football competitions. He now lives in Europe (such as the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup). In the ’80s, Dolph Lundgren had relationships with singer Grace Jones from Jamaica and model Paula Barbieri from the United States of America.

Grace Jones discovered Lundgren in a dance club and employed him as a bodyguard while he was completing a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering on an exchange program at the University of Sydney in Australia. Lundgren was taken away to America, where he finished his final thesis.

In Marbella, in 1994, he married Anette Qviberg (born 1966), a jeweler and fashion stylist. Ida Sigrid Lundgren (born 1996) and Greta Eveline Lundgren (born 2001) are their two daughters, both born in Stockholm. The reason Lundgren and Qviberg chose to live outside of Hollywood was to give their children a normal childhood. In the year 2000, his father passed away.

Three masked burglars reportedly stormed into Lundgren’s Marbella home in early May 2009, tying up and threatening his wife, but departed when they saw a family portrait and understood the house belonged to Lundgren. Later, Lundgren reported that the invaders were Eastern European and that he had contacted Bulgarian contacts to examine them, but to no avail. Ida Lundgren, Lundgren’s older daughter, suffered from PTSD as a result of the incident.

His wife was the “most traumatized,” and they divorced in 2011. From 2011 to 2017, Dolph Lundgren was married to Jenny Sandersson. In June 2020, Lundgren married Norwegian personal trainer Emma Krokdal. In the early 1980s, Lundgren earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from KTH Royal Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Sydney.

In Kyokushin karate, he holds the title of 4th dan black belt and was European champion in 1980–81. During his time in Sydney, he worked as a bodyguard for Jamaican singer Grace Jones and began dating her. He relocated to Boston after receiving a Fulbright scholarship to MIT. Jones persuaded him to drop out of college and relocate to New York City, where, following a brief job as a model and bouncer at Manhattan nightclub The Limelight, he landed a small role as a KGB thug in the James Bond film A View to a Kill.

Lundgren played He-Man in the 1987 science fantasy picture Masters of the Universe, Lt. Rachenko in the 1988 film Red Scorpion, and Frank Castle in the 1989 film The Punisher after appearing in Rocky IV. He appeared in films like I Come in Peace (1990), Cover Up (1991), Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991), Universal Soldier film series (1992, 2009, 2012), Joshua Tree (1993), Pentathlon (1994), Men of War (1994), Johnny Mnemonic (1995), The Shooter (1995), Silent Trigger (1996), The Peacekeeper (1997), and Blackjack throughout the 1990s (1998).

He made his directorial debut with The Defender in 2004, followed by The Mechanik (2005), Missionary Man (2007), Command Performance (2009), and Icarus (2010), all of which he also starred in. Lundgren returned to Hollywood in 2010 with the part of Gunnar Jensen in The Expendables, alongside Sylvester Stallone and an all-action star cast, after a long stint in direct-to-video films since 1995. In The Expendables 2 (2012) and The Expendables 3 (2013), he reprised his role (2014).

In 2014, he co-starred in Skin Trade, a human trafficking action thriller that he co-wrote and produced. In Creed II (2018), he reprised his role as Ivan Drago, and in The Expendables 4, he will reprise his role as Gunner Jensen. In Sharknado 5: Global Swarming (2017), he plays the protagonist’s adult son Gil, and in Aquaman (2018), he plays Mera’s father.

In the fifth season of Arrow, he also had a recurring role. Lundgren was offered the opportunity to test out a character based on Jones’ comments when visiting the sets of ‘A View to a Kill’ as Grace Jones’ boyfriend. In 1985, he made his Hollywood debut as a henchman named Venz in the James Bond film starring Roger Moore. When he learned that actor Sylvester Stallone was looking for an imposing fighter to play a key role in ‘Rocky IV,’ he submitted his photos and videos to one of Stallone’s friends.

Despite being first turned down, the cast of ‘Rocky IV’ came out to him after auditioning 5,000 other performers. As a result, Lundgren won his breakthrough role as Ivan Drago, the film’s major antagonist. Lundgren was viewed seriously as an action star after ‘Rocky IV.’ In truth, Lundgren engaged in a genuine boxing battle against Oleg Taktarov after starring in the Sylvester Stallone-directed film, which helped his on-screen image as an action hero.

In 1987, Lundgren won his first leading role as the gigantic He-Man in the scientific fantasy film ‘Masters of the Universe.’ Unfortunately, the picture garnered generally unfavorable reviews, with some critics even suggesting that Dolph Lundgren would never make it big in Hollywood. He was, nonetheless, compared to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Filmmakers continued to cast Dolph Lundgren in their films due to his incredible physique and ability to pull off jaw-dropping action sequences.

Throughout the 1990s, he appeared in 15 films, including six direct-to-video pictures. Some of his films, such as ‘Universal Soldier’ (1992) and ‘Johnny Mnemonic’ (1995), were box office successes, boosting his popularity. Almost all of his films were direct-to-video releases, beginning with ‘Silent Trigger,’ in 1996. ‘The Minion,’ ‘Agent Red,’ and ‘The Last Warrior’ are among his most popular direct-to-video films.

Lundgren first wore the director’s hat in 2004, when he directed the British-German action picture ‘The Defender.’ Douglas W. Miller wrote the picture, which stars Dolph Lundgren, Jerry Springer, and Shakara Ledard in significant roles. Apart from directing ‘The Mechanik,’ Lundgren made his screenwriting debut the following year, co-writing the picture with Bryan Edward Hill. He also starred with Ben Cross and Olivia Lee in the film’s major role.

He subsequently went on to direct a few more films, including ‘Missionary Man’ (2007), ‘Command Performance’ (2009), and ‘Icarus’ (2010), before reprising his role as Gunner Jensen in ‘The Expendables’ in 2010. Lundgren appeared alongside Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, and Steve Austin in the picture.

He played Gunner Jensen again in ‘The Expendables 2’ in 2012, and then starred alongside Steve Austin in the 2013 action thriller ‘The Package.’ In addition to ‘Battle of the Damned,’ ‘Ambushed,’ and ‘Puncture Wounds,’ he proceeded to star in a number of direct-to-video pictures.’ He returned to the character of Gunner Jensen in Patrick Hughes’ ‘The Expendables 3’ in 2014. He co-produced, co-wrote, and starred in the action thriller film ‘Skin Trade,’ which is based on human trafficking, the following year.
