Mental health issues are being brought into the open by a Harvard-trained psychiatrist using Amazon’s Twitch livestreaming platform in order to reduce the stigma associated with talking about them.

For his 370,000 Twitch viewers, 37-year-old Alok Kanojia is known as “Dr. K.” He hosts “Healthy Gamer GG,” a monetized Twitch livestream in which he talks about topics such as online harassment, depression, and self-criticism with well-known gaming guests. His YouTube channel is likewise monetized by adverts under the same name. “I started streaming because I didn’t want to be a streamer,” he stated. In order for me to get to know the gamers, I wanted to go where they were.
In October, Kanojia and his wife, Kruti, 35, launched Healthy Gamer, a firm that pays and trains a network of video gaming instructors, primarily using cash raised on Twitch. Kruti Kanojia is the company’s chief executive officer.

HealthyGamerGG picDr. Alok Kanojia is on the other side of the screen. On the other end of the line are the man’s enormous headphones, fidgeting with the pen in his home office. He’s conversing with a person going by the name of Mini, who’s wearing large headphones (hers have cat ears on them). Mini is opening up to Kanojia — or Dr. K, as he is affectionately known by his admirers — about her lifelong struggles with anxiety, sadness, and poor self-esteem. Thousands of people tuning in on Twitch are sending their sympathies and sending heart-shaped emoticons into the chat box. After six sessions of therapy, Mini is still not satisfied with the answers she has received. Dr. K. asks, “What do you want to know?” Her answer, “what’s wrong with me?” is met with a pause and fidgeting. Even more heart emojis appear now.

His practice is currently located in Houston, Texas, and Kanojia has a doctorate from Harvard. There were many new “assaults on our cognition” before COVID-19: apps designed to keep you scrolling or viewing videos, and games designed to keep you playing. The mental health care system was ill-prepared for these new “assaults on our cognition.”

“Because psychiatry isn’t enough,” Kanojia stated in a recent Zoom interview. A more comprehensive approach, like the one we take to physical health, is what he recommends. It’s time to stop focusing on medicine as the only solution.” Think about it: If we claimed you had a physical problem, what would we do if there were no gyms or nutritionists? Before he started broadcasting, Kanojia and his wife, Kruti Kanojia, co-founded the firm Healthy Gamer. Because of his depression, he spent a lot of time playing computer games like StarCraft and Diablo 2 as a form of therapy.

When I was feeling overwhelmed, I’d play more video games. To make matters worst, the more time I spent playing video games, the more stressed I became. As a result, “it became a vicious circle,” he claimed. After studying meditation and yoga in India, he was able to come up with a solution.

He inquired about video game addiction while doing training to become a psychiatrist. It was only then that he turned to his gaming peers and inquired about their mental well-being and how much time they spent playing video games. He discovered that they had a lot in common, including issues with social anxiety, a lack of self-assurance, and a sense of meaninglessness.

The result was an informal online and in-person group conversation on gaming and mental health, where players were taught meditation and given the opportunity to open up about their experiences. The Kanojias began their Twitch channel in the fall of 2019 after deciding that others could benefit from their chats.

Gamer GG’s Healthy Gamer_ A long line of people have been broadcasting advice in pop culture through their Twitch channels. In the 1950s, there was Joyce Brothers, a psychologist who appeared on television. Since then, Dr. Ruth has become a household name in the field of sexual therapy. There is still a lot of interest in Dr. Phil’s television show today. Kanojia, on the other hand, is afraid of becoming a celebrity in the same way that they became famous characters. Many Dr. K memes have been created and Dr. K is the only one who can save his devotees from death. However, he hopes that those viewers will remain attentive long enough to hear what he has to say.

On Video Game Streaming Sites, Players Are Taking Priority Over Games. In Kanojia’s words, “When they actually learn the stuff we teach, what they discover is that they don’t need me.”

Addie She is a member of Halocene, an indie rock band that’s been streaming its shows since at least 2013. Depression and bipolar disorder were among her mental health difficulties. She was able to better understand therapy after watching the HealthyGamer GG webcast.

Amick was inspired to seek help after watching the HealthyGamer GG webcast, but she couldn’t locate a therapist who was a good fit. Twitch encouraged her to participate in the trial program they had put up with Healthy Gamer, which provides mental health peer-counseling for broadcasters, and she happily consented.

Even if you’re not feeling your best, you still have to put on a brave face in front of an audience. As Amick puts it, “there are more than a thousand people watching me right now. Some folks may be wondering, ‘What’s going on with this girl?'” he says. Tune out after saying, “I do not want to watch this,” and then turning the volume down. Then, as soon as you see the numbers fall, it enters into your head.”

He makes it clear that his Twitch streams are not therapy; this is stated prominently at the beginning of each show and guests are required to sign a consent form before appearing on the show’s YouTube re-upload. Critics, on the other hand, point out that it has the appearance and sound of therapy, which creates some ethical concerns. Psychiatrists can give general advice when asked for an opinion about someone in a public setting, but it is unethical for a psychiatrist to give a professional opinion unless he or she has conducted an examination and been granted proper authorization, according to the American Psychiatric Association Principles of Medical Ethics.

It’s important to distinguish between general advice and professional opinion in this situation. According to Rachel Kowert, “Everything you watch in the show is definitely therapy,” you can declare “I’m not doing treatment.” In her capacity as a research psychologist and the research director at Take This, a mental health non-profit organization that also supports the gaming community, she is worried for those who stream. On the Twitch channel Psychgeist, Kowert also discusses mental health issues, but his content is less personal and more topical. A mental health advocate and a mental health professional have an obvious distinction, she argues, but there is nothing intrinsically wrong with openly discussing one’s mental health in public.

There’s a big difference between mental health activists and mental health experts when it comes to making suggestions or comments about individual cases.

Kowert cites an exchange between Kanojia and Byron Daniel Bernstein, a well-known streamer and eSports player better known by the handle Reckful, that took place in late 2019. “You may have clinical depression, but I think what you’re describing isn’t clinical depression,” Kanojia says to Bernstein as he continues talking about his little periods of joy. It seems to me that you’re having a problem since your life is lacking. That’s a new one on me.” After Bernstein’s death, the conversation between Dr. K and Reckful received a lot of attention. Kanojia, a long-time admirer of Bernstein’s gaming prowess, was touched. Soon after Bernstein’s death, Kanojia made an emotional plea for help on his webcast, pleading with his viewers to support each other.

Let go of your guard and open yourself to others; don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s important to keep in mind that you’re playing a game with other people. Asking for help is the first step toward helping someone else.
