Jack John Bushnell Hanna is an American zoo keeper and a dedicated wildlife specialist & conservationist. His first passion is wild animals. He has donned hats of an animal specialist, zoologist, scientist, philanthropist, journalist & TV personality. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium have honored him by naming him “Director Emeritus.” When he was the director of the Columbus Zoo, he was instrumental in improving the facility. On January 2, 1947, Jack entered this world. He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. Outside of town, his dad ran a farm. Volunteering with his veterinarian since he was eleven years old. His affection for animals began at this time. He went to the Saltsburg, Pennsylvania-based Kiski All Boys Boarding School. He attended Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, and earned a BA there in 1968. He double-majored in political science and business. Following the 1973 closure of his pet store, Jack accepted a position as a director at the Central Florida Zoo. After having his first child in 1975, he decided to put his career on hold while he focused on his family.
It wasn’t until 1978 that he became the director of the Columbus Zoo. He did what he could to increase the zoo’s visibility and financial support. Due to time constraints, he resigned from his position as director and became emeritus in 1992. His program “Hanna’s Ark” ran on WBNS, Columbus’s CBS affiliate, from 1981 to 1983.
After making appearances on “Good Morning America” and “David Letterman’s talk show,” he became a national celebrity and saw a 400% spike in visitors to the Columbus Zoo. In 1988, he and his zoo animals were guests on “Larry King Live.” Monkeys on the Interstate, his debut book, was released this year and details his experiences and time spent working at the Columbus Zoo.
His book “Let’s Go to the Petting Zoo with Jack Hanna” came out in 1991. The Columbus Zoo was in poor shape when Jack first started working there as director. Low visitor numbers and deteriorating habitats for the animals were to blame. Jack planned and ran a wide variety of fun and informative activities. Because of this, the zoo saw a huge influx of visitors. More people visited the zoo because of the many entertaining and informative events he organized. The zoo’s outdated cages were replaced with larger, more natural habitats thanks to his networking with local business leaders to generate money for the project.
After the birth of twin gorillas at the zoo in 1983, he decided to take advantage of an invitation to go on Good Morning America to raise public awareness of the facility. Hanna went on to become a wildlife correspondent for FOX News, CNN, and other news outlets, among many more television appearances. Hanna’s charisma and humor while showcasing the zoo’s animals made him a huge hit with visitors. With the goal of freeing him up to focus on his media work, the Columbus Zoo made him director emeritus in 1992.

Muskingum College, named after a Delaware Indian word, was founded by a group of New Concord citizens in 1837. In 1854, female citizens were allowed to register for the first time. As enrollment increased in the decades after the American Civil War, the school’s initial focus on the classical liberal arts shifted to include more contemporary topics. For religious purposes, Muskingum joined the United Presbyterian Church’s Ohio synod in 1877.
Since 1983, Muskingum has called the Presbyterian Church its spiritual home (U.S.A.). After adjacent Franklin College shut down in 1927, its former students began to relocate to Muskingum. It upgraded its charter from college to university rank in 2009.
