Jack John Bushnell Hanna is an American zoo keeper and a dedicated wildlife specialist & conservationist. His first passion is wild animals. He has donned hats of an animal specialist, zoologist, scientist, philanthropist, journalist & TV personality. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium have honored him by naming him “Director Emeritus.” When he was the director of the Columbus Zoo, he was instrumental in improving the facility. He has published numerous books and made frequent TV appearances to educate the public about exotic creatures. It is his aim of life to care for & educate people about wild & unusual creatures. He continues to spread his message of the need of protecting wildlife by traveling the globe and participating in conservation programs.
On January 2, 1947, Jack entered this world. He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. Outside of town, his dad ran a farm. Volunteering with his veterinarian since he was eleven years old. His affection for animals began at this time. He went to the Saltsburg, Pennsylvania-based Kiski All Boys Boarding School. He attended Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, and earned a BA there in 1968. He double-majored in political science and business. Following the 1973 closure of his pet store, Jack accepted a position as a director at the Central Florida Zoo. After having his first child in 1975, he decided to put his career on hold while he focused on his family.
It wasn’t until 1978 that he became the director of the Columbus Zoo. He did what he could to increase the zoo’s visibility and financial support. Due to time constraints, he resigned from his position as director and became emeritus in 1992. His program “Hanna’s Ark” ran on WBNS, Columbus’s CBS affiliate, from 1981 to 1983.
After making appearances on “Good Morning America” and “David Letterman’s talk show,” he became a national celebrity and saw a 400% spike in visitors to the Columbus Zoo. In 1988, he and his zoo animals were guests on “Larry King Live.” Monkeys on the Interstate, his debut book, was released this year and details his experiences and time spent working at the Columbus Zoo.
His book “Let’s Go to the Petting Zoo with Jack Hanna” came out in 1991. From 1993 to 2008, he hosted “Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures,” and from 2007 through 2011, he hosted “Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild” and “Jack Hanna’s Wild Countdown,” both of which are still airing in syndication. In 1996, he released Jack Hanna’s Ultimate Guide to Pets, Jungle Jack Hanna’s Pocketful of Bugs, and Jungle Jack Hanna’s Safari Adventure.
In 2007, he premiered a new TV series called “Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild,” in which he travels to exotic locations and educates viewers about the local cultures and wildlife. Three times this show was honored with an Emmy. Since 2011, ABC has been airing “Jack Hanna’s Wild Countdown,” a popular Saturday morning program. As a wildlife correspondent, he has also made appearances on shows including Anderson Cooper 360, Piers Morgan Tonight, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Hollywood Squares, The Maury Show, Entertainment Tonight, and programs on FOX News and CNN.
Jack is the national spokesman for the A Special Wish Foundation and sits on the board of directors for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. In addition to “rescue the elephants,” “Cheetah conservation fund,” and “rolling dog farm,” he is involved in numerous other conservation initiatives. In 2005, he starred in Neal McCoy’s music video for “Billy’s Got His Beer Goggles On,” alongside a small number of exotic animals.
Currently, he serves on the boards of directors for SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund, Partners in Conservation, the International Center for the Preservation of Wild Animals, and the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project.
The Columbus Zoo was in poor shape when Jack first started working there as director. Low visitor numbers and deteriorating habitats for the animals were to blame. Jack planned and ran a wide variety of fun and informative activities. Because of this, the zoo saw a huge influx of visitors. He networked with influential people and groups and was able to secure funding to modernize the zoo and aquarium. In 1968, Jack wed his high school sweetheart, Suzi Egli.
He’s the proud father of three young ladies. Kathaleen, the eldest, got married to a Brit and now lives there permanently. Suzanne, the second daughter, is married and has four kids, all of whom live in Cincinnati. Julie, the youngest, resides with her father, Jack, and has a career in animal education at the Columbus Zoo.
When Hanna took over as director of the Columbus Zoo in 1978 (now known as the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium), it was a small, dilapidated facility. More people visited the zoo because of the many entertaining and informative events he organized. The zoo’s outdated cages were replaced with larger, more natural habitats thanks to his networking with local business leaders to generate money for the project.
After the birth of twin gorillas at the zoo in 1983, he decided to take advantage of an invitation to go on Good Morning America to raise public awareness of the facility. Hanna went on to become a wildlife correspondent for FOX News, CNN, and other news outlets, among many more television appearances. Hanna’s charisma and humor while showcasing the zoo’s animals made him a huge hit with visitors. With the goal of freeing him up to focus on his media work, the Columbus Zoo made him director emeritus in 1992.

Muskingum University is a private, coeducational university located in New Concord, Ohio. It is mostly an undergraduate institution, though it does offer a small number of master’s degrees in the arts and sciences. Besides the traditional arts and humanities, scientific and social science, and education departments, there are also a number of multidisciplinary, pre-professional, and teacher licensure programs available.
Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland offers engineering and nursing degrees to students from Muskingum, and Southwest General Hospital in Middleburg Heights offers a medical technology certificate. The Boyd Science Center, the Louis O. Palmer Art Gallery, and the McAllister Biology Research Station, located not far from Otsego, are three of Muskingum’s most notable buildings.
Muskingum College, named after a Delaware Indian word, was founded by a group of New Concord citizens in 1837. In 1854, female citizens were allowed to register for the first time. As enrollment increased in the decades after the American Civil War, the school’s initial focus on the classical liberal arts shifted to include more contemporary topics. For religious purposes, Muskingum joined the United Presbyterian Church’s Ohio synod in 1877.
Since 1983, Muskingum has called the Presbyterian Church its spiritual home (U.S.A.). After adjacent Franklin College shut down in 1927, its former students began to relocate to Muskingum. It upgraded its charter from college to university rank in 2009. For the sake of study, biology has been broken down into its several subfields, even though all of these fields are interconnected by shared fundamental principles. Thus, while it is usual practice to divide the study of plants and animals and the structure and function of organisms (morphology and physiology), there are some biological processes that are shared by all forms of life.
Many biologists study life from the ground up, starting with the smallest conceivable components. Life is seen as the result of chemical and energetic changes between the various chemical components that make up an organism at the level of molecular biology, for example. With the advancement of more powerful and accurate laboratory instruments and methodologies, scientists have been able to more precisely identify not just the final physiochemical organization (ultrastructure) of the molecules in living matter, but also the mechanism by which these molecules replicate. The advent of genomics in the late 20th and early 21st centuries was especially important to those developments.
