Jack Nicklaus, Jack William Nicklaus in full, the Golden Bear, an American professional golfer (born on January 21, 1940 in Columbus, Ohio) who dominated world golf from the 1960s to the 80s.
Nicklaus won the U.S. Amateur Championship in 1959 and again in 1961 while being a student at Ohio State University. Nicklaus also recorded 282 for an amateur at the U.S. Open in 1961. The first open championship took place at the Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland on 17 October 1860. Eight professionals played three rounds of the 12-hole course in Prestwick in one day. Willie Park, Sr. won the opening tournament and the silver-buckled leather belt Challenge Belt was presented to every champion until the following Open. The tournament was opened in 1861 to amateurs. In 1863 a pouch of £10 was introduced and a first-place cash prize of £6 was added to the prizes of the professionals finishing second, third and fourth. The Open was always dominated by professionals with only six amateur victories, all before 1930. The latter was the third opening of Bobby Jones which was part of his famous Grand Slam (four major tournament victories in one calendar year). The popularisation in golf in the mid-20th century brought forth a number of remarkable Open Champions, including the Sir Henry Cotton from England (winner in 1934, 1937 and 1948), the Bobby Locke of South Africa (1949–50, 1952, 1957), the Peter W.
In 1995, the Open became part of the official schedule of the PGA Tour. The year after the Italian playoff with Costantino Rocca, American John Daly won another period of American supremacy at the open in which 10 of the next 13 winners were hailed from the United States, Tiger Woods among them, who won three championships (2000, 2005–06). The following years saw several victories for golfers, including Paul Lawrie in 1999, David Duval in 2001, Ben Curtis in 2003, and Padraig Harrington in 2007.
