Jack Nicklaus, Jack William Nicklaus in full, the Golden Bear, an American professional golfer (born on January 21, 1940 in Columbus, Ohio) who dominated world golf from the 1960s to the 80s.

Nicklaus won the U.S. Amateur Championship in 1959 and again in 1961 while being a student at Ohio State University. Nicklaus also recorded 282 for an amateur at the U.S. Open in 1961. (For Nicklaus’s account of his U.S. Open career, see U.S. Open: the personal thoughts of Jack Nicklaus.) After he had a professional career in 1962, Nicklaus was awarded a six-time Masters Tournament (1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975, 1986), a four-time US Open (1962, 1967, 1972, 1980), five-times PGA (1963, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1980), and three-times British Open (Open Championship) Championship (1966, 1970, 1978). Six Australian Opens titles included his victories overseas. Nicklaus was a six-time US World Cup winner (1963, 1964, 1966, 1967, 1971, 1973) and a three-times world cup winner (1963, 1964, 1971). He had played in 100 major championships by 1986 and finished 45 times in the top three. He has a total of 73 PGA victories — a number that only exceeds Sam Snead and Tiger Woods — and a record of 18 wins at the four leading professional championships. Nicklaus showed remarkable composure in addition to great natural ability and power under the most severe competitive pressure.

Nicklaus designed several golf courses, including the Ohio Muirfield Village Golf Course which started in 1976 and which was sponsored by Nicklaus. He also has written several books, including Gulf My Way (1974; co-written with Ken Bowden), Nicklaus by Design (2002; co-written with Chris Millard) (2007; co-written with David Shedloski). Nicklaus received the presidential medal of liberty in 2005.

Masters Tournament, an invitational golf tournament held each year in Augusta, Georgia, from Thursday to Sunday, during the first week of April. The tournament was designed by Bobby Jones, the American golfer. It is considered one of the four main golf tournaments: the U.S. Open, the British Open and the Professional Golfer’s Association of America (PGA). The only one of them played on the same site every year. The majority of participants are professionals, although a few amateurs are invited every year.

In 1930, when he was 28, Jones retired from competing for golf and formed a consortium with Clifford Roberts, a Wall Street financier. They bought a commercial nursery in Augusta for $70000 for a total of 365 acres (150 hectares) in order to create an exclusive golf club — no pool and tennis courts. The 72-hole golf course was designed by well-known British designer Alister MacKenzie. In the beginning of 1933, the club opened with a tournament to commemorate the occasion. Jones expanded the tournament one year later and the Masters was born.

The Masters is one of the most prestigious sports events in the world. Based on their past achievements, golfers are invited to compete. Apart from a monetary award worth several million dollars, winners will receive a gold medal and a lifetime invitation to the Masters, while the other three majors will receive automatic invitations for the next five years. Moreover, winners have had the distinctive Green jacket of a club member since 1949, and their names have been engraved on the Silver Masters Trophy of the Club since 1961.

Many professional golfers say that Augusta National is their most beautiful golf course. There seems to be a brighter sun, a bluer sky, a gentler wind, more magical pines and azaleas than any other golf court in the world. Once said Sam Snead,

Before the 2002 Masters, the race at Augusta National was extended by 285 yards, due to the changing technology and the improved strength conditioning of contemporary golfers (261 metres). At the same time, the three-hole fairway bunkers have been modified to make long drivers more dangerous. The course was extended again before the 2006 Masters, this time by 155 yards (142 metres) for a length of 7 445 yards (6,808 metres). The course is probably still changed to keep up with the modern game.

The green in the 11th hole, the entire 12th hole and the 13th hole tea have been known as Amen Corner, due to their physical proximity and some crucial moments in Master history. These are among the most renowned and difficult golf holes, and it was these holes that were a turning point for me on my way to the 1958 Masters victory.

Moments in the Master’s storey include Jack Nicklaus’ sixth win in 1986 at age 46, and Tiger Woods’ first Masters Championship was captured in 1997 while shooting 270 to break the 72-hole record.

Millions of fans have watched the fairway to the final green at Augusta on a Sunday afternoon, with a joyful crowd. This author has been fortunate to gain the Masters four times and can confirm that these last moments are just as enjoyable in golf.

British Open, officially Open Championship or Open, is one of the four major golf tournaments in the world – the Masters, the American Open and PGA – and the oldest continuous sports championship. It is best known outside of the United States as the Open Champions, or simply the Open, since 1860, in several courses in Scotland, England, and, one time, Northern Ireland. Every year, with a few exceptions. (For more information on the name of the tournament, see Note: British Open? Open Championship?.) Open Championship?

The first open championship took place at the Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland on 17 October 1860. Eight professionals played three rounds of the 12-hole course in Prestwick in one day. Willie Park, Sr. won the opening tournament and the silver-buckled leather belt Challenge Belt was presented to every champion until the following Open. The tournament was opened in 1861 to amateurs. In 1863 a pouch of £10 was introduced and a first-place cash prize of £6 was added to the prizes of the professionals finishing second, third and fourth. In 1870 for the third consecutive time, Tom Morris, Jr., won the Open and was therefore allowed to maintain the Challenge Belt permanently. Since there was no prize for the winner, the Open only took place again in 1872 when the winning golfer was determined to be given the Golf Champion Trophy, now commonly known as the Claret Jug. The Open became a 72-hole event in 1892 (four 18-hole rounds), and after the first two rounds of play, a cut (field reduction) was initiated in 1898.

The Open was always dominated by professionals with only six amateur victories, all before 1930. The latter was the third opening of Bobby Jones which was part of his famous Grand Slam (four major tournament victories in one calendar year). The popularisation in golf in the mid-20th century brought forth a number of remarkable Open Champions, including the Sir Henry Cotton from England (winner in 1934, 1937 and 1948), the Bobby Locke of South Africa (1949–50, 1952, 1957), the Peter W.

In 1995, the Open became part of the official schedule of the PGA Tour. The year after the Italian playoff with Costantino Rocca, American John Daly won another period of American supremacy at the open in which 10 of the next 13 winners were hailed from the United States, Tiger Woods among them, who won three championships (2000, 2005–06). The following years saw several victories for golfers, including Paul Lawrie in 1999, David Duval in 2001, Ben Curtis in 2003, and Padraig Harrington in 2007.

Jack Nicklaus, who won in 1966, 1970 and 1978 and was placed among the top five sixteen times with seven-second places, was also a notable open champion. Harry Vardon won the Open six times – more than any other player – and four golfers won five championships, including Thomson and Watson. South African Gary Player, who was awarded the title in 1959, 1968 and 1974, has recorded 46 of the most open appearances.

The Open Championship was always played on links (mostly treeless golf courses that are built along a coast and retain the naturally uneven terrain of their locations). The Open was played exclusively at the Prestwick Golf Club from 1860 to 1870. It has been played in a number of rotational courses since 1872. At first the three courses, all of which were located in Scotland, were Prestwick, St. Andrews and Musselburgh. The current rotation includes nine courses on the Old Course at St.
