Drew an automobile at 9 age for the first time (the Austin 16 – plate of his father: BUC 677). I merely had to perch on two gas cans to see the dashboard

He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his motor racing contributions on the Queen’s Honors List in 1972.

In 2001, in the Queen’s Birthday Honors List he was given a Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire for his work in motor racing. He was the fourth rider to be ruled after Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss, and Frank Williams. The older I become the more I know and it’s easier for me to say sorry if I’m wrong. Perhaps I’ll get maturity one day.

[Knighthood was granted] For me, this is a very proud occasion. This has to mean more than my first win or my world championship triumph or team owner’s victory. I was quite pleased with the world championships, my career, and everything that happened, and this honor possibly reflects this. But also with the Scottish Dyslexia Trust, the Springfield Boys Club in the East End, and my role as President of the British Racing Driver’s Club, I am proud of my work in driver safety.

Ken has been and is still a huge part of my life and I want to thank him. But I also want to thank all the mechanics of all the teams that I have been driving for. I couldn’t win 27 races or 3 world titles without these races and I couldn’t establish a team with my son Paul which was also a significant part of my life.

[The safety of the driver] When I raced the safety record was awful. Driver safety was a great part of my life and it was ‘extremely fulfilling’ to contribute to safety advancements.

It felt like going back into history when I saw the picture again, and I believe that this is one of the attractive elements that make the film so attractive, and the attraction people like it, most certainly in Europe, is that security was completely different at that time. Roman [Polanski] made himself a lot of this filming. I mean, he worked in a lot of areas of the film, and you can see cars going through the pits as they were. For example, there was no barrier and hundreds of gallons of high-octane fuel, and hundreds of people stood there without any protection. Whereas today it would never be possible because of what we did in security.

Name ABC’s Wide World of Sports as a pundit in the 1970s and 1980s and has maintained a collaboration with Ford Motor Company for three decades. The F1 team he started with his son was Jaguar Racing.

After disappointing school experiences, he left Dumbuck’s workshop at the age of fifteen and was an apprentice as a mechanic. Only afterward was he diagnosed with dyslexia, which explained his learning challenges. Stewart’s brother, Jimmy, was a successful semi-professional driver for the Scottish Ecurie Ecosse Team when Stewart drove an old racing vehicle on the cold Dumbartonshire Streets for the first time. The younger Stewart was warned against motorsports shortly after Jimmy collapsed and encouraged to pursue his markers ability.

After failing to form the British Olympic shooting team in 1960, he began to find a path back to the car that was against the wishes of his parents. When he ran his debut race on the Scottish airport track Charterhall in 1962, he was twenty-three years old—a late bloomer in car racing. He married Helen’s wife that year as well. By 1963 Stewart was driving for Ecurie Ecosse, the old squad of his brother, and race team manager Ken Tyrell was aware of it. Stewart drove out Bruce McLaren, an accomplished F1 driver, in a Tyrell test. McLaren was going to lead the awesome McLaren racing team later. In 1964 Tyrell’s proposal to allow Stewart to lead him in the British Formula Three championship, and Stewart’s subsequent domination of the competition, brought the young pilot to the forefront as an F1 contender.

Stewart made a strategic decision on his F1 start in 1965. Instead of a more competitive seat beside Graham Hill on the BRM squad, it rejected an offer from the famed Lotus team. Clark would have placed Stewart constantly in his shadow, as the number one driver of Lotus. The hungry young driver may shine at BRM. Clark was history’s winning F1 driver when he died in 1968, with 25 career wins. Although Stewart made his F1 debut in a Lotus vehicle in 1965 for BRM. He led the Lotus and qualified in December 1964 in pole position for the non-title Rand Grand Prix in South Africa.

In his first six Grand Prix races, Stewart was ranked in the top six, gaining championship points. In the pole position he qualified for a non-championship race in Goodwood, and in the International Silverstone Trophy, he beat the world champion, John Surtees. At the 1965 Italian Grand Prix in Monza, he beat teammate Graham Hill to the finish line. He completed the third overall season of the World Championship, an incredible ending for a rookie driver. The 1966 season began promisingly with a victory for Stewart in Monaco, but he had no mechanical problems for the rest of the season and was sixth in the World Championship. He almost won the Indianapolis 500 that year, and with just eight laps to go his first mechanical issue pulled him out of the race.

When he began F1, “the sport was horribly risky,” he is cited in Forbes as stating. Like other F1 drivers at the time, Stewart drove without a seatbelt when he collapsed in Spa-Francorchamps during the 1966 Belgian Grand Prix. He drove 165 mph away from the track in heavy rain and collapsed into a telephone pole and shed before he drove into a farmer’s outbuilding. A damaged gasoline tank filled the cockpit with fuel, and Stewart was trapped in the smallest spark. He was retrieved from what may easily have been a fatal collision, with ribs and shoulder and rib fractures fractured.

Jackie Stewart entered F1 and was Scot Jim Clark’s largest racing driver on the track. The competition between the icon and the youngster promised to become a rich rivalry, but Clark died before Stewart reached his stage completely. Born in Kilmany, Scotland, 4 March 1936, Clark, like Stewart, competed against the wishes of his parents. At first, he demonstrated his mettle in the automobiles of his buddies, but he began to draw attention to the Jaguar D type for Border Reivers. After the plans for Aston Martin’s Grand Prix team had crumbled, he signed the Formula Two and Formula Junior championships with Lotus. The manufacturer’s relationship led him to F1 with the team that ran the fastest, but not always the most mechanically dependable vehicles. He started competed for F1 in 1960, and until his death was a strong competitor.
