Jan Karon was born in 1937 on a farm outside of Lenoir, North Carolina to parents Janice Meredith Wilson. That’s the house where Jan Karon grew up. Karon read short stories by Guy de Maupassant and novels by John Steinbeck when she was nine years old. Karon remembers being a fan of both of these writers. In the next year, she completed her debut novel.
The future profanity-free author was influenced by the film “Gone With the Wind,” and he wrote “damn” into one of his books as a result. She also said she was warned about her conduct. Karon relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, with her mother when she was 12 years old. Her mother had recently married Toby Setzer and had two other children at the time.
In their neighborhood, the majority of the residents were working class, like the family.
