Jazmine Marie Sullivan is an American recording artist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was born on April 9, 1987. Her first single, “Need U Bad,” which was produced by Missy Elliott, went to number one on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Her second single, “Bust Your Windows,” which was produced by Salaam Remi, reached number four.
Her music has parts of r&b, reggae, dub, pop, jazz, Neo soul, and doo-wop. Kim Burrell, Stevie Wonder, Lauryn Hill, Brandy, and Dorinda Clark Cole are some of the singers that Jazmine says have had the most impact on her.
Jazmine Sullivan was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up there. Her mother, Pam, used to sing backup for Philadelphia International Records. When she was 5, her father got a job as a curator for the city’s Historic Strawberry Mansion in the Strawberry Mansion section, and the family moved into the historical landmark. She graduated from Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in 2005, where she studied vocal music. Sullivan started out as a contralto in the children’s choir. A few years later, she moved up to the adult choir.
There, she made a whole album, but it was never put out. In the end, Sullivan was taken off the label. She kept working with Missy Elliott, who produced a few of the songs on her first album, including the hit single “Backstabbers,” which was written by Elliott and produced by Timbaland. While she was unsigned, Sullivan wrote her own songs. After she signed with J Records in 2007, they worked together again on her first two studio albums.
Jazmine’s first recording was a guest spot on Kindred the Family Soul’s song “I Am.” She also sang in the background on their songs “Party’s Over” and “Surrender to Love,” the title track of their 2003 debut album. “Say I,” a song that Jazmine wrote and recorded with producers Cool & Dre, was given to Dre’s then-girlfriend Christina Milian for her third album, So Amazin’, before Jazmine released her first album. The song was released as the first single, and it reached its highest point at #13 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and #21 on the Hot 100. Jazmine wrote songs for Jennifer Hudson, Tamia, Monica, and Fantasia Barrino after she had her own success with her first album, which she co-wrote. She finished the sessions and made an album called Break My Little Heart, but she was fired and the album has never been released.
In May 2008, when her first single, “Need U Bad,” came out, Sullivan made her big-time music debut. The song, which also had vocals from Missy Elliott and Sandy “Pepa” Denton of Salt-n-Pepa, went to number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and reached number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100. Fearless, Sullivan’s first album, came out on September 23, 2008. Sullivan wrote every song on the album, and she, Missy Elliott, Salaam Remi, and Peter Edge all worked on the album as executive producers. Elliott, Remi, Stargate, Carvin & Ivan, Jack Splash, and Fisticuffs all helped make the album. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart and at number six on the Billboard 200.
After the success of her first single, Sullivan released “Bust Your Windows” as the second single from Fearless in September 2008. It reached number four on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number thirty-one on the Billboard Hot 100, making it her most successful single on that chart to date. “Bust Your Windows” was in the first episode of the hit TV show Glee on Fox. It was also nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Song, but didn’t win. The third single from the album was “Lions, Tigers, and Bears,” which came out in December 2008. It got to number ten on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 74 on the Billboard Hot 100. This was her third consecutive top ten on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Later, Sullivan tried to be successful in the UK. In February 2009, she put out “Dream Big” as her first official UK single, but it didn’t do well on the charts there. Later, in April 2009, the song was released as the fourth single from the album in the US, but it also didn’t do well on the charts there. The fifth and last single from the album, “In Love with Another Man,” came out in August 2009. It got to number 37 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, which isn’t great. “Switch!” was going to be their sixth single, and it was going to come out in November 2009. However, the release of “Switch!” was later canceled. The RIAA gave the album a Gold rating, and more than 510 thousand copies have been sold in the United States so far.
On Jadakiss’s 2009 album The Last Kiss, there was a song called “Smoking Gun” with Sullivan and Jadakiss. She also opened for R&B singer Ne-2009 Yo’s Year of the Gentleman Tour and opened for R&B singer Maxwell’s very successful 2008 U.S. tour. She also sang on a song called “Champion” from Ace Hood’s second album, Ruthless. She also performed at the Essence Music Festival in June 2009, and R&B singer and producer Ryan Leslie opened for her on a few dates before the Essence Festival. Sullivan was in commercials for Cotton Incorporated in 2009. Also, Sullivan was a guest on the song “Different Languages” from Snoop Dogg’s tenth studio album, Malice n Wonderland.
In 2009, Sullivan began making Love Me Back, her second album. Missy Elliott, Lamb, Ne-Yo, Anthony Bell, Los da Mystro, Ryan Leslie, and Salaam Remi, who was also a big part of Fearless, were some of the producers who worked on the album. “Love You Long Time,” “Blow,” “Don’t Make Me Wait” (a tribute to Prince), “Redemption,” “Excuse Me,” “Good Enough,” and “You Get On My Nerves,” which is said to be the sequel to “Bust Your Windows” and was co-written by Ne-Yo, were all recorded for the album. It was finished in June 2010 and came out on November 30, 2010.
It came out on July 10, 2010. On the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, the song got to number 3. The second single from the album, “10 Seconds,” came out on the radio at the end of September. It reached number 31 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song was supposed to come out on October 25, but it didn’t come out until November 22. On November 12, the music video for the single came out. Billboard named Sullivan the “Rising Star” for 2010 in early December.
Sullivan tweeted in the first three months of 2011 that she was leaving the music business for good. “I promised myself I wouldn’t do it if it stopped being fun. And now I’m here. I’m not saying that I’ll never sing again because I don’t think that’s true. But right now, there are some things I need to figure out.” After three years, Sullivan is better than ever and ready to get back into the spotlight with her new album Reality Show. In an interview with Billboard in 2014, Sullivan said that she would have to come back because “I can’t escape my calling.” There are rumors that the album has 11 or 12 songs. It will have production from Key Wane, who recently made waves by making the hit Yonce/Partition by Beyoncé, Salaam Remi Girl on Fire, Da Internz, Joe Gallagher, and more.
The first official single is called “Dumb” and it features Meek Mill. It came out on May 12, 2014, and reviews were positive. Reality Show is going to have a lot of different themes, and this anthem makes you feel a lot of different things.
The album debuted at number 17 on the Billboard 200, and in its first week, it sold 57,000 copies. It made two singles, one of which, “Holding You Down (Goin’ in Circles),” reached number three on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Love Me Back was praised by all music critics, who liked how the songs were written and how Sullivan sang them. Its song “Holding You Down” was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and it has since sold 300,000 copies.
In January 2011, Sullivan announced on Twitter that she was leaving the music business for good. She said, “I promised myself I wouldn’t do it when it stopped being fun. And now I’m here. I’m not saying that I’ll never sing again because I don’t think that’s true. But right now, I need to figure out a few things.” On October 7, RCA Records said that it was getting rid of J Records, Arista Records, and Jive Records. Since the government shut down (and all other artists previously signed to these three labels).
In 2014, she came back to music by announcing that her new album, Reality Show, would be coming out. In an interview with Billboard, Sullivan said that she would have to come back because she “can’t avoid calling.” During her break, she watched a lot of reality shows, which is where the name came from. The album has 14 songs, and Key Wane and Salaam Remi worked on the production.
