James E. Bohannon (born January 7, 1944) is a television and radio presenter in the United States. He is best known for anchoring The Jim Bohannon Show, a nationally syndicated late-night radio talk show on the Westwood One Network. He previously presented America in the Morning, a nationally syndicated radio news show, for 31 years before retiring in December 2015.
Talkers magazine named Bohannon one of “America’s 100 Most Important Radio Talk Show Hosts” for three years in a row, and he received the Talkers Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. In 2003, Jim Bohannon was honoured by the National Radio Hall of Fame. He’s also up for the Marconi Award for Network Syndicated Personality of the Year from the National Association of Broadcasters.
Jim Bohannon was born in the Missouri town of Lebanon. His broadcasting career began in Lebanon, where he was born and raised, when he secured a position at hometown KLWT in 1960 for a dollar an hour. Bohannon attended Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield after graduating from Lebanon High School in 1962. He continued to work part-time in radio while in college, at KWTO as a news reporter and at KICK as a disc jockey. In 1964, a single occurrence helped to shape Bohannon’s eventual career and ability to think on his feet. Senator Barry Goldwater, a presidential contender, made a campaign appearance in Springfield, which KWTO covered through live remote broadcast. However, the Senator was running late, requiring the young Bohannon to occupy the time by improvising on air for over an hour. In a 2003 interview with Inside Radio, he said: “I drew on every last ounce of strength I could muster. I was making jokes about the campaign and improvising. It was as if you were dumped in the middle of the English Channel and told you had to learn to swim. That stands out as a time when I was put to a rigorous test.” Taking three busloads of fans from Springfield to Kansas City, Missouri to see The Beatles in concert was another highlight for Bohannon while working in radio in those early years.
Bohannon enrolled in the United States Army after graduating from Southwest Missouri State in 1966 and served until 1970. His four years of service with the Army Security Agency (ASA) included a tour of duty with the 199th Infantry Brigade during the Vietnam War (April 1967 to April 1968). Bohannon was stationed at Long Binh with the 303rd ASA Battalion as part of the II Field Force headquarters during the Tet Offensive in early 1968. After his Vietnam service, Bohannon was deployed to the Washington, D.C. region until 1970, when he was discharged.
For the purposes of voting in primary elections, Bohannon has claimed that he is a registered Democrat. Monday through Friday, 10:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Eastern Time, the show airs (02:00 to 05:00 UTC during daylight saving time, 03:00 to 06:00 UTC during standard time). Guests for interviews and calls from listeners are featured in each portion of the show. His show typically focuses on politics and pop culture. Guest guests have ranged significantly in nature and political beliefs when Jim is absent; former substitute hosts have included conservative talk host and comic Dennis Miller, liberal television analyst and talk-radio host Leslie Marshall, and late comedian Joan Rivers.
Jim Bohannon also hosts The Offbeat, a daily Westwood One radio feature that airs as the closing piece of both The Jim Bohannon Show and America in the Morning (near the end of the first half-hour). After 31 years as the host of America in the Morning, Bohannon announced his retirement on December 18, 2015. The one-hour show, which airs weekdays at 5 a.m. Eastern Time on Westwood One, will be continued by radio newsman John Trout. Bohannon’s other broadcasting credits include working as a booth announcer for CBS-Face TV’s the Nation on occasion. He’s also done voice announcements for some other Westwood One radio shows’ satellite feeds. The National Freedom of Information Day was founded by Bohannon, who is also the main force behind it. The event, which was first proposed by Bohannon to the Society of Professional Journalists in 1979, is held on March 16 every year to commemorate the birthday of President James Madison, the father of the Bill of Rights.
