Born Yuvraj Raj Dhesi on July 19, 1986, the professional wrestler best known by his ring name Jinder Mahal is presently signed with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) on his second stint working on the SmackDown brand. Dhesi is of Indo-Canadian descent. During his initial time with the company, Mahal was a part of the tag team known as Three Man Band (3MB). During his second reign, Mahal was successful in defending both the WWE Championship and the WWE United States Championship, both of which he held for a single command. Dhesi was employed by WWE from 2010 until June 2014, when he was released from his position there. He re-signed with WWE in 2016 and debuted on the RAW brand as Jinder Mahal once again. However, the Superstar Shakeup in April 2017 moved him to the SmackDown Live brand.
As a result of the Superstar Shake-up in April of 2018, he was moved back to the Raw brand. Dhesi started his career as a wrestler at the Martial Arts Fitness Centre in Calgary, Alberta, where he worked for Premier Martial Arts Wrestling (PMW) under the ring name Raj “The Future” Dhesi. His wrestling mentor then was the former WWE superstar “Razor” Rick Titan. After that, he continued his training in the New Japan Pro Wrestling school under the tutelage of “Champagne” Jerry Morrow and “Bad News” Allen. After spending some time with the Hybrid Wrestling Coalition (HWC), Dhesi joined forces with his cousin Gama Singh Jr. to compete as The Karachi Vice and Sikh n’ Destroy in Stampede Wrestling, which is held in Canada.
The pair won the Stampede Wrestling International Tag Pair Championship in March of 2005 and maintained their grip on the title for eight months. They successfully defended their crown until November of the following year, having defended it for the second time in December. In addition, he wrestled for the Prairie Wrestling Alliance, where he held the title of PWA Champion from 2008 to January 2010, and was a member of three different championship tag teams. In addition, Dhesi was a competitor for Great North Wrestling (GNW), where he engaged in a rivalry with other wrestlers, including Samoa Joe and Hannibal.
He made the trip to Tampa, Florida, in December 2009 to try out for the WWE’s developmental organization Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW). He decided to begin his training to compete in WWE wrestling. To test out for the Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), he went all the way to Tampa, Florida. Dhesi believes that his ability to speak Punjabi and his simple attire, like his turban, sold him to the WWE more than his wrestling skills, which were seen by Steve Keirn, Pat Patterson, and Mike Rotunda during the tryout.
He recalls saying, “I think they needed an Indian guy; they were looking for one.” At the beginning of 2010, FCW gave him a developmental deal to play for the team. On the edition of SmackDown that aired on April 29, 2011, Jinder Mahal debuted on television as a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) member. Backstage, he greeted fellow Indian superstars The Great Khali and his brother, Ranjin Singh. During the episode, Mahal said in Punjabi that he was pleased and ecstatic at the presence of Khali and Ranjin.
Both of them, on their end, felt delighted about the situation. The following week, Mahal confronted Singh over his poor management of Khali, which cemented Singh’s status as a heel. Mahal was disgusted that Khali and Singh had been engaging in juvenile antics rather than winning contests. The next week, as Khali was participating in a Mahal Kiss Cam episode, Mahal halted it and slapped Khali twice. The giant did not react in any way. On May 20, Mahal interfered in a wrestling contest between The Great Khali and Jey Uso, which caused Khali to exit the ring and confront Mahal.
On the edition of Raw that aired on September 5, he and The Great Khali suffered their first defeat. They were defeated by WWE Tag Team Champions Evan Bourne and Kofi Kingston in a bout that was not for a championship. Khali shoved Mahal after being slapped by Mahal during their rematch on SmackDown, which resulted in another loss for them at the hands of Kingston and Bourne. Kofi Kingston performed a Trouble in Paradise on Mahal, resulting in Khali regaining his ability to use his face. During the episode of SmackDown that aired on September 16, 2018, Mahal assaulted Khali while competing against Heath Slater.
On the edition of SmackDown that aired on September 23, 2011, Khali beat Mahal in a singles match, which resulted in Mahal suffering his first defeat in a singles battle. After his rivalry with Khali ended, Mahal turned his attention to other wrestlers whom he considered to be beneath him or humiliating. In November, Mahal and Ted DiBiase started their rivalry with one other. The rivalry between Mahal and DiBiase concluded the edition of Smackdown that aired on December 30, when Mahal won by submission and ended DiBiase’s winning run. In December, Mahal went after Sheamus and condescendingly treated him on many occasions to establish a reputation for himself.
On December 13, Sheamus won a victory over Mahal, and over the next several months, they competed against one another numerous times, with Sheamus consistently prevailing over Mahal. Sheamus won the match. The Great Khali defeated Mahal in the first Royal Rumble that Mahal competed in, reigniting the rivalry between the two. On the next episode of SmackDown, Khali once again prevailed against Mahal. After that, Mahal participated mostly on the Superstars circuit and in-house performances at the beginning of 2012. At Over The Limit, Mahal competed in a battle royal but ultimately came out on the losing end. The winner of the match was going to get the opportunity to challenge for either the WWE Intercontinental Championship or the WWE United States Championship.
The confrontation between Mahal and numerous wrestlers started when he interrupted Randy Orton during one of his promos. As an act of retribution, Orton delivered an RKO to Mahal. At the Raw 1000 event on July 23, Mahal attacked Kane with Curt Hawkins, Tyler Reks, Hunico, Camacho, and Drew McIntyre. He said that none of them had been given a chance inside WWE and that he would provide an opening for them by defeating Kane. The unexpected presence of the Undertaker put a stop to their progress.
The Brothers of Destruction launched an assault on the group and successfully eliminated them all. After that, he started a fight with Ryback, which he eventually won by intentionally being counted out and disqualified. To demonstrate his worth to Ryback, Mahal challenged two jobbers to a bout like Ryback’s, and he promptly won the match by submitting both of his opponents. Despite this, Mahal continued to engage in a rivalry with Ryback, assaulting Ryback both during their games and after Ryback’s bouts. Ryback was able to successfully pin Mahal on the SmackDown program that aired on August 24.
After WWE renamed its developmental area FCW as NXT Wrestling, Mahal began appearing on the revamped version of WWE NXT. He began a winning run by prevailing over several competitors, including Derrick Bateman and Percy Watson. On the episode of NXT that aired on August 8, 2018, Jinder Mahal was placed into the Gold Rush Tournament to become the first-ever NXT Champion. In the first round of the tournament, Mahal prevailed over Bo Dallas. On the episode of NXT that aired on August 15, 2018, Mahal advanced farther in the Gold Rush Tournament after earning a victory against Richie Steamboat.
On the episode of NXT that aired on August 29, 2018, Mahal’s winning run on NXT ended as Seth Rollins beat him in the finals of the Gold Rush Tournament. On the episode of NXT that aired on November 7, 2018, Jinder Mahal defeated Bo Dallas, Drew McIntyre, and Justin Gabriel to become victorious in a number one contender fatal four-way elimination match. The following week, Dallas provoked Mahal into fighting him in a match with the opportunity to win the championship at stake, but Mahal was able to come out on top once again. When Mahal suffered another defeat at the hands of NXT Champion Seth Rollins, his opportunity to win the championship was ultimately wasted.
While Heath Slater was competing against Brodus Clay on the episode of SmackDown that aired on September 23, Mahal and Drew McIntyre attacked Clay to disrupt the bout. After some time, the alliance Slater, Mahal, and McIntyre formed was given the designation 3MB. Starting in October 2012, 3MB amassed many victories over Team Co-Bro, which consisted of Santino Marella and Zack Ryder, as well as The Usos, mainly due to the unlawful intervention. The winning streak of 3MB was stopped by the team consisting of The Miz, Alberto Del Rio, and the Brooklyn Brawler when they competed at TLC and were beaten.
On the next week of Raw, Miz and Del Rio joined forces with Tommy Dreamer to take another victory against 3MB. 3MB were allowed to challenge Team Hell No for the WWE Tag Team Championships on the RAW episode that aired on new year’s eve, but they were ultimately unsuccessful. The popularity of 3MB saw a gradual decline over a few months. Their most recent win was against Tonnes of Funk in a match of three on 2, but in general, they nearly always come out on the losing end. During the episode of RAW that aired on November 11, 2013, 3MB temporarily changed its moniker to The Union Jacks.
It was revealed on July 27 that Dhesi has re-signed with the WWE to continue his career as Jinder Mahal. On the episode of Raw that aired on August 1, Jinder Mahal and Heath Slater returned to television. They demanded contracts from Raw until Raw General Manager Mick Foley told them they would have to compete against each other in a match for a Raw contract, which Mahal ultimately won. On Raw for the remainder of the month, Mahal continued to suffer defeats at the hands of competitors like Neville, Sami Zayn, and Darren Young. After that, Mahal would use the gimmick of a “man who comes in peace,” calling for calm and composure.
In the episode of Raw that aired on September 12, 2018, following his defeat of Jack Swagger, Jinder Mahal revealed that when he left WWE, he “felt anger and rage” but has “found inner peace” since then. After that, Mahal started competing on Main Event and Superstars, where he often faced off against Darren Young and alternated between winning and losing. After confronting Rusev’s adversary Enzo Amore on the edition of Raw that aired on December 19, a much more slender and muscular Mahal allied with Rusev. This occurred after Mahal had a dispute with Amore before the two assaulted Amore.
In a 2-on-1 handicap match aired on the Raw episode that aired on January 2, 2017, Mahal and Rusev were victorious against Big Cass, who was Amore’s tag team partner. The following week on Raw, Mahal was defeated by Cass, who had Shawn Michaels at ringside. This was because Michaels had just made the Sweet Chin Music on Rusev, which caused Mahal to get distracted. Rusev accidentally distracted Mahal during their match against The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods) on the episode of Raw that aired on February 27, which led to the loss for the tag team of Mahal and Rusev. As a result of the failure, animosity started to build between the two competitors.
On the kickoff event for WrestleMania 33, which took place on April 3, Jinder Mahal finished as the runner-up in the Andre the Giant Memorial battle royal. Mojo Rawley eliminated Mahal as the winner when Rob Gronkowski interfered in the match. On the episode of SmackDown Live that aired on April 11, it was announced that Mahal had been drafted in the Superstar Shake-up. Later that night, Mahal lost to Rawley following more intervention by Gronkowski to finish their rivalry, but on the episode of SmackDown Live that aired on June 6, Mahal defeated Rawley.
