Weir was born on July 2, 1984, in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, to nuclear power plant engineer John Weir and nuclear power plant worker and home inspector Patti Weir (née Moore). He is of Norwegian descent and has a four-year-younger brother, Brian “Boz” Weir. Weir grew up in Quarryville, Pennsylvania, an Amish-dominated agricultural town in central Pennsylvania. His father was an English saddle event competitor. Weir was also a skilled rider, having won many equestrian events by the age of nine and competing in the Devon Horse Show with his Shetland pony, Shadow. His family relocated to New Britain, Connecticut, so that he could continue his education. Later, he said that horseback riding had taught him body consciousness, which had helped him prepare for figure skating.

Weir’s parents purchased him a pair of used figure skates after watching Kristi Yamaguchi win a gold medal at the Albertville Winter Olympics in 1992, He practised jumps on roller skates in the basement of his family’s home when the weather was colder. After seeing Oksana Baiul perform at the 1994 Winter Olympics during the sport’s rise in popularity following the Nancy Kerrigan assault at the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, he was inspired to explore figure skating further. His parents gave him a new pair of skates and a bundle of group lessons at the University of Delaware, which is 45 minutes away from their house, for Christmas. He had a natural ability to run.

During his first year of competition, Weir competed in both singles and pair skating; Hill partnered him with Jodi Rudden to help him concentrate on other facets of figure skating, such as spins, stroking, and artistry, rather than jumping. Rudden and Weir won the South Atlantic Regionals in juvenile pairs the first year and advanced to the Junior Olympics in intermediate pairs the next year. Weir placed fourth in the Junior Olympics as a juvenile and fifth in the South Atlantic Regionals as a juvenile in his first year of skating (1997).

Weir won regional and other minor competitions as a novice in single skating during the 1997–1998 season, and finished third in the novice category at the US National Championships. During the 1998–1999 season, Weir was promoted to the junior level. He played in regional and minor competitions again this year, finishing fourth at the US Nationals. Weir claimed that, in addition to his lack of competitive experience and a growth spurt, he suffered with nerves during this period, which harmed his results.

During the 1999–2000 season, Weir became eligible to race in the Junior Grand Prix, finishing seventh and second in his two Junior Grand Prix assignments. He was the only junior athlete in the 2000 U.S. Nationals to try a triple Axel in his short programme, but despite dropping, the judges awarded him first place. He fell again during his free skate and finished sixth, while Evan Lysacek took first in their first competition meeting, despite the fact that Lysacek was fifth after the short programme.

The Finlandia Trophy was the only Grand Prix competition assigned to Weir by US Figure Skating that season. He was one of only two skaters in the field to skate a clean short programme that included a triple lutz-triple toe loop combination, a “scratchy triple Axel,” and the best spins. He was first after the short programme, but he finished second overall, just behind Romanian Gheorghe Chiper. Weir’s lutz and loop jumps both popped, but he completed his triple Axel-triple toe loop combination and four other triple jumps successfully. He also had to participate in the Eastern Sectionals, where he finished first after a fall and qualified for the US Nationals.

Weir retired from competition in October 2013 and worked as a figure skating analyst for NBC during the Sochi Olympics. He decided not to accept demands for the Olympics to be boycotted in protest of Russia’s anti-gay laws, and was chastised for it by both anti-gay and LGBTQ activists. To Russia with Love, a 2014 EPIX documentary about gay athletes in Russia and the United States, featured him. The film, which was made by Robert Redford and Sundance Productions and was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award, was secretly shot during the Sochi Olympics.
