Taylor was born in Bray, County Wicklow, to Irish mother Bridget (née Cranley) and British father Peter Taylor on July 2, 1986. Sarah is her older sister, and Lee and Peter are her older brothers, the latter of whom is a mathematics professor at Dublin City University. He decided to settle in Bray after meeting and marrying Bridget. He was crowned Irish senior light heavyweight champion in 1986. He began his career as an electrician before becoming Taylor’s full-time boxing coach. He also coached Adam Nolan, who, like Taylor, was a member of Ireland’s Olympic team in 2012. Bridget developed a passion for boxing and became one of Ireland’s first female referees and judges.

Her three older brothers and sisters all went to the same school. She played ladies’ Gaelic football and camogie with her local GAA clubs, Bray Emmets and Fergal gs, in addition to boxing and association football at school. While she was still at St Killian’s, she was a member of Bray Runners, a local athletics team, and several American colleges reportedly offered her sports scholarships. She, on the other hand, chose to attend University College Dublin. Despite the fact that UCD is well-known for its athletic scholarships,[citation needed] Taylor was selected based on her Leaving Cert results. She decided not to finish her studies at UCD as her sporting career took off.

Crowds gathered in the streets of Bray to watch her success on giant screens set up particularly for the occasion. “Katie Taylor Ireland’s Boxing Legend,” a single by Coddle, was released. In the Irish charts, the album hits number 42.

Taylor made her Olympic debut on August 6, 2012, after receiving a first-round bye. She defeated Natasha Jonas of the United Kingdom 26–15 (R1: 5–2, R2: 5–5, R3: 9–4, R4: 7–4), securing her spot in the semi-finals and, at the very least, an Olympic bronze medal. At the Olympics, Taylor’s fans set a new record for loudness.

On August 8, 2012, she defeated Tajikistan’s Mavzuna Chorieva in the semi-finals, winning 17–9 (R1: 3–1, R2: 4–2, R3: 6–3, R4: 4–3), securing her spot in the final and, at the very least, an Olympic silver medal.

Taylor was a member of the Wicklow and District Schoolboys League’s St Fergal’s and Newtown Juniors, as well as the Dublin and District Schoolboys League’s Ballyfermot United. Taylor was a member of boy’s teams. She also received the league’s Player of the Year award after representing the league in the Kennedy Cup, an inter–league competition. Taylor played senior club soccer for Lourdes Celtic, St James’s Gate, St Catherine’s, and Peamount United in the Dublin Women’s Soccer League. Taylor appeared in the 2003 DWSL Premier Cup final for St James’s Gate against Dundalk City. After extra time, Gate was defeated 3–2. Taylor also appeared in the 2005 FAI Women’s Cup final for Peamount United. Peamount, on the other hand, was defeated 1–0 by Dundalk City. Taylor was a part of the St Catherine’s team that reached the final of the FAI Women’s Cup in 2009. However, due to her boxing obligations, she was unable to compete in the final. Taylor was a part of the Peamount United team that won the Dublin Women’s Soccer League, the DWSL Premier Cup, and the FAI Women’s Cup in 2010, along with Nicola Sinnott, ine O’Gorman, Sara Lawlor, and Louise Quinn.

Taylor played 11 times for the senior team between 2006 and 2009, scoring two goals. On April 22, 2006, she made her senior international debut at Richmond Park against Switzerland in a 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier. The Republic of Ireland won by a score of 2–0. Taylor also represented the Republic of Ireland in a high-profile away friendly against the United States in 2006. Taylor’s first senior international goal came against Hungary in a UEFA Women’s Euro 2009 qualifier at Tolka Park on April 1, 2007. The Republic of Ireland won 2–1 thanks to Taylor’s goal. On February 16, 2008, she scored her second goal in the same qualifying campaign, in a 4–1 loss to Italy. In the same game, she was also dismissed. On September 24, 2009, she made her last international appearance, coming on as a substitute in a 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan.
