LaKeith Lee Stanfield is a Californian actor and rapper who hails from the city of Victorville. Keith began attending the John Casablancas Modeling & Career Center in Orange County when he was fifteen years old, according to his bio. Short Term 12 was Destin Cretton’s college thesis film at the time, and he auditioned for it a few years later (2008). Later, the newer version of Short Term 12 (2013) marked LaKeith’s first appearance on the professional stage as an actor. A role in the Martin Luther King biopic Selma (2014) followed, and he has since appeared in getting Out (2017), Knives Out (2019), The Photograph (2020), and the FX television series Atlanta, among other projects.

He landed his first agent after performing a surfer skit. He has stated that he would be thrilled to play the Joker, the DC Comics villain, and arch-enemy of Batman, in a future film. Has a daughter from a previous relationship with Xosha Roquemore, who was born in 2017. Since 2014, he has appeared in three films that have been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture: Selma (2014), Get Out (2017), and Judas and the Black Messiah (2019).

“Short Term 12” has given me the opportunity to work with some wonderful people. In those days, I was just a young teenager surfing the Internet, clicking on anything that contained the word “actor.” Someone called me in for an audition for a role in a movie one day. I’m originally from Victorville, which is about an hour and a half north of Los Angeles and deep in the desert. Victorville is so named because it is a particularly violent neighborhood. It is, however, a beautiful location. It’s very quiet.

I’m like a little baby in a cradle, taking it all in slowly and carefully. I’m just extremely fortunate to be able to do what I’m doing. Many times, being the most intelligent person and possessing enormous potential is pointless if one does not have a guide through which to channel one’s energy and potential. Anything that gives me the opportunity to express myself is my primary focus. Rap, dance, and photography are all options. Those are the means by which I express myself.

In spite of the fact that I was brought up in a financially impoverished family with parents who were dysfunctional on both sides, I’ve managed to put up reflectors to most of the negative events in my life. I don’t have a lot of belongings with me. With guns pointed at your head, it can be difficult to maintain your integrity and stand up for what you believe. Jimmie Lee and his family did that, as well as a number of other things.

Simply listening, exchanging ideas, and going back and forth with others is all that is required. It’s a beautiful thing to witness.  It’s been a never-ending grind of trying to land work that I’m passionate about, as well as endless auditions and meetings. I’ve been fortunate in that a slew of interesting doors have opened up for me, most notably the opportunity to meet wonderful people who have been inspired by my work and who believe I can bring to their projects.

Things like the prison industrial system and other such measures are cleverly implemented in order to marginalize a specific group of people – and this is true not only of black people but of people from all walks of life in American society. Some people appear to be hopeless causes, but they aren’t necessarily so. Even if they’re in a bad situation, the one small thing you do to assist them can make a significant difference.

My greatest strength is that I am courageous, meaning that even if I am afraid of something, I go ahead and do it. I go with my gut instincts. That courage has been extremely beneficial to me because it is not directed at anyone in particular. That felt like a safe haven with wonderful teachers, where everyone could let their guard down and not feel judged or scrutinized. Immediately upon walking outside, it was as if they were saying, ‘Look at these weird drama club kids.’ The fact that we were all cool in our own way was something we all agreed on.

I believe that prejudice has reached a point where many people hold prejudices in their minds without even realizing that they are doing so. This is due to the fact that prejudice is deeply ingrained in the fabric of what it means to be an American.

Back in the day, my auntie would enjoy sock puppet shows performed by my siblings and me. They thought it was hilarious that we had such a high level of perception about things that they had never experienced before, so I and my friends would pretend to be Englishmen and drink tea in front of them, pretending to be rich and affluent.

We’re all the same; we’re not that much different. I wanted to be as genuine as possible because all of those people like Jimmie Lee Jackson – me, Mike Brown, and everyone else – we’re all the same; we’re not that much different.

Music is something I do on a daily basis in my real life. I was making music long before I ever considered pursuing a career in acting. I’ve always been a highly expressive person who enjoys expressing myself in whatever way is available to me.

Whenever you talk about an authority figure oppressing people, it is the people who are the ones who are holding that authority figure accountable. Rather than relying on our oppressors to liberate us, we must think about how we can liberate ourselves instead of relying on them to free us.

I’d always known I wanted to work in the entertainment industry. I was always confident that I would make an appearance on a big screen at some point. Have you ever played the game ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?’ Have you ever thought about it? Do you remember what I’m talking about? I’d love to play the role of Sidney Poitier because I admire him and his accomplishments. My belief is that I become a better performer with each and every performance that I witness because I have always thought about what I would do if I were in their shoes while watching them perform.

A significant influence on my life has been my upbringing. The fact that I come from a large family does not surprise me. I’m a member of the Moors, a musical duo that performs in the area. Born in San Bernardino in the summer of 1991, I grew up in the cities of Riverside, San Bernardino, and Victorville before moving to Los Angeles. My favorite show when I was younger, when I was a toddler or something, was Jason’s Lyrica, which I used to watch on repeat for hours at a time. I’ve been making music since I was 11 years old when I would sit down and record songs using a computer microphone and a cassette recorder.

In spite of the fact that “2 Chainz” is a fantastic artist, hip-hop is about much more than just “2 Chainz.” How he manages to do that with metaphors is a mystery to me. Back in high school, I was a bit of a loner and an outcast. As a result of the fact that they were only interested in fighting and causing riots, I didn’t have many friends in my age group. Due to the fact that my two younger brothers have autism, I have grown up in a family that has been surrounded by it and has misunderstood it for a long period of time.

Despite the fact that rap is about bragging, it is also about being honest and expressing one’s emotions through music. It is believed that your body’s atoms recombine every five years, resulting in the formation of a completely new set of atoms. Because Kanye was acting so ratchet in the song ‘Watch the Throne,’ it’s one of my favorite Kanye songs. The kind of bizarreness that reminds me of Willy Wonka, preferably in which I play an alien, is something I’d like to be a part of. Anything that is unique, challenging, and true to one’s own self. Things that are genuine appeal to me. Life, in and of itself, is a kind of performance in my eyes. Every action I take is a performance in and of itself. The location where I’m going is a ruse.

My poetry is set to a beat – after all, that’s what they call rap – and I perform it in front of an audience. The fact that I enjoy watching myself so much is that it allows me to see myself from a different perspective than I would otherwise be able to see myself from, and when I do, I am able to be a lot more cynical and identify the issues that require attention. Victorville provided me with the opportunity to go inside and use my imagination a little bit more than I had previously. Music is created by my producer HH, and I write to the beats that he creates in my studio.

At the age of 14, he joined his high school’s drama club and decided that he wanted to pursue a career in acting. After joining the John Casablancas Modeling and Acting Agency when he was 15, LaKeith was sent out on commercial auditions and eventually landed his first role. While initially unsuccessful and dejected, he eventually landed a role in the short film Short Term 12 in 2009, which would pave the way for even greater opportunities in his future career. As a result, when the short was turned into a feature film in 2013, director Destin Daniel Cretton approached LaKeith about reprising his role in the film, which also featured Brie Larson. He received two nominations for his performance, which included a scene in which he rapped along with the director Cretton to a song he co-wrote with his co-star LaKeith. The song was nominated for a Satellite Award in the category of Best Original Song in 2014.

In the intervening years, LaKeith has continued to work, appearing in films such as the Academy Award-winning Selma, which starred David Oyelowo and in which Lakeith played the pivotal role of Jimmie Lee Jackson. His role as Snoop Dogg in the Academy Award-nominated Straight Outta Compton followed the following year (2015). For his starring role in the short film Tracks, he was awarded the Best Actor award at the 24fps International Short Film Festival in the same year (2015).
