Lance Vance Hoyt is a professional wrestler from the United States who works for the company known as All Elite Wrestling (AEW). He was born on February 28, 1977. As a result of a collaborative effort between All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), he has held the title of IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion in the past. His work with New Japan Pro Wrestling under the ring moniker Lance Archer is mostly responsible for his widespread notoriety.

During his early years, he became a member of the Suzuki gun stable run by Minoru Suzuki. Together with Suzuki, he won the 2011 G1 Tag League. After Davey Boy Smith Jr. signed with NJPW, the two of them formed a tag team known as the Killer Elite Squad (K.E.S), who went on to win the IWGP Tag Team Championship twice, the NWA World Tag Team Championship twice, and the GHC Tag Team Championship twice for Pro Wrestling NOAH.

Archer began competing as a singles wrestler when Smith parted ways with the organization in 2019. In the same year, Archer won the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship, a title he later reclaimed for a record-tying second time in 2021. Smith had been Archer’s tag team partner until 2019. Archer continued to make appearances for NJPW after it was revealed in February 2020 that he had joined All Elite Wrestling. However, the announcement was made.

Hoyt started his training as a wrestler under Solo Fiatala in the year 2000. He made his debut in the sport in July of that same year, competing against Tarzan Taylor. After that, he spent the next four years competing on the independent circuit in Texas under the ring names Lance Steel and Breakdown. The latter was a character that Hoyt invented on the spot in Corpus Christi when he was forced to wrestle in his street clothes because he had forgotten his usual ring attire and was forced to compete in his street clothes.

In the Texas indie wrestling circuit, Hoyt’s most prominent run was in Professional Championship Wrestling (PCW), where he made his debut in the year 2000 as Shadow, a villainous heel character. Shadow was a bad guy. During his whole career in PCW, he competed against prominent opponents like as Paul London and Ahmed Johnson. Early in his stay, he established a stable known as “The Dark Circle.”Following his departure from TNA, he signed with All Japan Pro Wrestling under his birth name to compete in the Voodoo Murders, where he was recruited by TARU.

However, he only competed in five bouts for the business before quitting and signing a contract with WWE in April 2009. After a wrestling contest on May 15, 2011, Hoyt made his debut for New Japan Pro Wrestling by assaulting Satoshi Kojima after the match. This took place during the promotion’s very first tour of the United States. The next day, it was stated that Hoyt, under the ring name Lance Archer, had joined Minoru Suzuki’s Suzuki-gun, which was engaged in a dispute with Kojima at the time. Kojima had just started their fight at the time. Archer made his first appearance in the ring on June 18 at Dominion 6.18 in Osaka. He teamed up with Suzuki to compete in a tag team bout, and the two of them were victorious. Kojima and Togi Makabe were their opponents.

After three days, on the sixth, Kojima, Makabe, and Tomoaki Honma defeated the Suzuki-gun team consisting of Archer, Taichi, and Taka Michinoku in the first round of the J Sports Crown Openweight 6 Man Tag Tournament. At the 2011 G1 Climax, which took place in August, Archer competed and won four of his nine bouts, including his first battle against Togi Makabe, a former IWGP Heavyweight Champion. He ultimately placed eighth out of the 10 wrestlers competing in his block.

On September 19, Archer competed in what was perhaps his most high-profile fight to date in New Japan, but he was beaten by Togi Makabe. Archer and Minoru Suzuki competed together in the G1 Tag League in 2011, and with a record of four victories and one defeat, the duo finished in second place in their block, which allowed them to advance to the tournament’s quarterfinals. On November 6, Archer and Suzuki won the 2011 G1 Tag League after defeating the CHAOS Top Team (Shinsuke Nakamura and Toru Yano) in the quarterfinals. They then went on to capture the title by defeating the IWGP Tag Team Champions Bad Intentions (Giant Bernard and Karl Anderson) in the finals of the tournament.

Archer scored eliminations over Kushida, Tiger Mask, and Inoue.

After the bout was over, Archer and Takayama issued a challenge to Tencozy, which consisted of Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima, to compete for the IWGP Tag Team Championship. Archer and Takayama attempted to win the championship on March 18, but they were ultimately unsuccessful. In an eight-man elimination tag team match that took place on July 22 at Kizuna Road, Archer, Suzuki, Michinoku, and Taichi prevailed against Prince Devitt, Ryusuke Taguchi, Togi Makabe, and Yuji Nagata. Archer was responsible for three of his team’s four eliminations, which led to their victory.

Archer and Makabe engaged in a staring contest after their match, which served as a buildup to their subsequent bout in the 2012 G1 Climax event. The event took place on August 1, the opening day of the tournament, and it resulted in Archer claiming victory for the second year in a straight against the previous holder of the IWGP Heavyweight Champion title. Archer entered the last day of the tournament on August 12 equal at the top of his block with a record of four wins and three losses. However, he was ousted from the finals after suffering a defeat to MVP in his final match.

Following Suzuki-gun’s victory on July 22, Archer issued a challenge for the IWGP Tag Team Championship, which was being held by Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima. Archer did not reveal who his tag team partner would be for the match, though. On August 13, it was disclosed that Harry Smith, who would subsequently change his name to Davey Boy Smith, Jr., would be Archer’s partner and the newest member of Suzuki-gun.

In a match that took place on October 8 at King of Pro-Wrestling, Archer, and Smith, who is now known as the K.E.S. (Killer Elite Squad), won the IWGP Tag Team Championship by claiming victory over Kojima and Tenzan. K.E.S. was able to successfully defend their championship for the first time on November 11 at Power Struggle by prevailing in a rematch against Tenzan and Kojima. K.E.S. competed in the round-robin section of the 2012 World Tag League from November 20 through December 1. K.E.S. advanced to the championship match of the tournament on December 2 by claiming victory against Always Hypers, who consisted of Togi Makabe and Wataru Inoue. This was Archer’s second championship match in a row. Later on the same day, Sword & Guns, which consisted of Hirooki Goto and Karl Anderson, was able to beat K.E.S. and win the 2012 World Tag League championship. K.E.S. successfully defended their IWGP Tag Team Championship on January 4, 2013, when the competed against Sword & Guns in a rematch at Wrestle Kingdom 7 held at Tokyo Dome.

At The New Beginning on February 10, Archer and Smith won the IWGP Tag Team Championship with a victory over Tenzan and Kojima. This was Archer and Smith’s third successful defense of the title. Archer attempted to challenge Shinsuke Nakamura for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship on March 3, during an event celebrating New Japan’s 41st anniversary. However, Archer’s attempt was unsuccessful. On April 5, Archer and Smith successfully defended their IWGP Tag Team Championship title against Nakamura and Tomohiro Ishii. This was their fourth successful defense of the title.

In a match that took place on April 20 in Houston, Texas, Archer and Smith prevailed over Ryan Genesis and Scot Summers to not only successfully defend their IWGP Tag Team Championship title but also capture the NWA World Tag Team Championship. K.E.S. was defeated by Tencozy in a four-way match on May 3, 2013, at Wrestling Dontaku. The fight also included Takashi Iizuka and Toru Yano, as well as Manabu Nakanishi and Strong Man; however, neither Archer nor Smith was involved in the conclusion. Tencozy was awarded the IWGP Tag Team Championship once again.

K.E.S. was granted a rematch for the championship on June 22 at Dominion 6.22 in a three-way match that also included Iizuka and Yano; however, they were unable to reclaim the title when Kojima won the contest by pinning Archer. On August 1, Archer began competing in the G1 Climax of 2013. In the last battle of the tournament, which took place on August 11, Archer prevailed over his tag team partner Davey Boy Smith, Jr. This eliminated Smith from contention for the championship bout and gave Archer a record of four victories and five defeats.

In a three-way battle that took place on November 9 at Power Struggle, K.E.S. competed against Tencozy and The IronGodz, who consisted of Jax Dane and Rob Conway. They were unsuccessful in their attempt to win the NWA World Tag Team Championship against The IronGodz in the first fall, but they were victorious over Tencozy in the second fall to win the IWGP Tag Team Championship. K.E.S. competed in the 2013 World Tag League from November 24 to December 8 of the same year.

They were able to win their round-robin block with a record of five victories and one defeat; nevertheless, they were ousted from the competition by their long-time adversaries, Tencozy, in the semifinals. K.E.S. was the losing team in the tournament for the IWGP Tag Team Championship, which was held at Wrestle Kingdom 8 on January 4, 2014, at Tokyo Dome. The tournament was won by Bullet Club, which consisted of Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson. K.E.S. was granted another opportunity to defend their championship against Bullet Club on February 9 at The New Beginning in Hiroshima, but they were once again beaten.

K.E.S. was unsuccessful in their attempt to win back the NWA World Tag Team Championship from Tencozy in a three-way match that took place on May 25 at Back to the Yokohama Arena. The contest also included Rob Conway and Wes Brisco. K.E.S. was given a second opportunity to compete in the NWA World Tag Team Championship on June 21 at Dominion 6.21. This time, however, the battle was a standard tag team match, and Tencozy was able to win once again.

During the period beginning on July 23 and ending on August 8, Archer competed in the 2014 G1 Climax. He finished tied for sixth place in his block with a record of four wins and six defeats. K.E.S. won the match against Tencozy on October 13 at King of Pro-Wrestling to reclaim their position as the NWA World Tag Team Champions. K.E.S. competed in the 2014 World Tag League from the 22nd of November to the 5th of December.[58] The group completed its bracket with a record of four wins and three defeats, falling just short of qualifying for the championship round of the competition.
