Lois Lowry’s first novel, A Summer to Die, was released in 1977. Following this sombre drama, Lowry displayed her lighter side in 1979 with Anastasia Krupnik, the first in a series of comedic works. Number the Stars, her first Newbery Award-winning novel, was published in 1989. Lowry got the award a second time in 1993 for The Giver, which was adapted into a film in 2014. Son (2012) and Gooney Bird and All Her Charms are two of his more recent pieces (2013).

Lowry was born Lois Ann Hammersberg in Honolulu, Hawaii, on March 20, 1937. She is one of America’s most popular and varied children’s book authors. From the WWII storey Number the Stars to the humorous adventures of Anastasia Krupnik to the fantasy The Giver, she has written in a range of literary styles.

Lowry was a quiet and introverted child who enjoyed reading. She knew she wanted to be a writer when she was about 8 or 9 years old. Because her father was a dentist and an Army officer, she had to move around a lot as a child. Lowry spent some of her education years in Japan, but she eventually graduated from a high school in New York City. She then attended Brown University for two years before dropping out to marry.

She married navy officer Donald Lowry when she was 19 years old. Because of Donald’s military job, the couple moved around a lot. They had four children along the way: Alix and Kristin, as well as Grey and Ben, sons. Lowry was living in Maine with her family when she chose to continue college, and she graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a bachelor’s degree in the early 1970s.

Lowry’s debut novel, A Summer to Die, was released in 1977 and was inspired by her own experience of losing her older sister Helen at a young age. She was also going through significant personal difficulties at the time, having split from her husband. Lowry’s successful hilarious series featuring Anastasia Krupnik debuted two years later.

Autumn Street, a novel that drew further inspiration from Lowry’s own experiences, was released in 1979. During World War II, the main heroine Elizabeth and her family move to live with her grandfather while her father is away serving in the war. While her father was stationed overseas, Lowry’s expectant mother sent her and her older sister to live with her grandparents. After the war, she and her family reunited with Lowry’s father and resided in Japan for a period.

With the 1989 historical novel Number the Stars, Lowry’s career soared to new heights. The Nazi occupation of Denmark during World War II is the subject of this book. Annemarie Johansen, the narrator, is friends with Ellen, a Jewish girl. When the Nazis began rounding up Jewish individuals, she and her family assist in hiding Ellen. Annemarie also assists Ellen and her family in escaping Denmark. For this novel, Lowry won the prestigious Newbery Award.

The Giver, one of Lowry’s best-known novels, was published four years later. The storey transports the reader to a future society free of violence and hunger, but where everyone’s lives are closely regulated. Jonas, a young teen, becomes the titular character’s apprentice, the only person having access to memories from the past.

Some people were offended by The Giver because of its violent themes, sexual nature, and portrayal of infanticide and euthanasia. Others, on the other hand, praised this amazing work, and Lowry was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1994 for it. With Gathering Blue (2000), The Messenger (2004), and Son (2006), Lowry contributed to this analysis of a dystopian future (2012).

In 1995, Lowry suffered a devastating setback. Grey, a United States Air Force pilot, was killed in a jet crash. At the time of his death, Grey’s daughter Nadine was only a toddler. Despite her grief, Lowry set out to write a book on her father’s life for her granddaughter. She told Publishers Weekly that going through family images for the project led her to think about her own life.
