Mahershala Ali (born February 16, 1974 in Oakland, California, United States), is an American actor who rose to prominence in the 2010s and received an Academy Award for his emotional and nuanced performance as the fatherly heroin dealer Juan in the film Moonlight (2016).

Ali was born and raised in Hayward, California. His father left the family when Ali was a baby to pursue a career as a dancer, and his mother was a Baptist minister. Ali received a basketball scholarship from St. Mary’s College in California. He began engaging in poetry slams when he was there, and he also appeared in a production of the play Spunk (based on Zora Neale Hurston’s stories). He converted to the Amadiyyah sect of Islam and changed his last name to Ali while he was there.

He was cast as the lead in the modest independent film Making Revolution after graduating (2003). He also received praise for his depiction of boxer Jack Johnson in a 2000 Arena Stage production of The Great White Hope in Washington, D.C. Ali was a cast member of the television show Crossing Jordan for a season (2001–02). He continues to appear in guest appearances on TV shows and was a cast member of the sci-fi TV series The 4400 from 2004 to 2007.

Ali played Benjamin Button in the popular film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008). Other prominent performances include a regular role in the well-received TV drama Treme (2011–12) and the character Boggs in the films The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 1 (2014) and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 2 (2014), in which he played an ally of Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) (2015). He also went by the name Prince Ali and recorded the rap albums Corner Ensemble (2006) and Curb Side Service (2007).

Ali rose to prominence after portraying political operative Remy Danton in the hit Netflix series House of Cards from 2013 to 2016. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for that portrayal in 2016. In the film Free State of Jones, he also received recognition for his portrayal of a former slave who becomes a political activist (2016). In addition to his Oscar-nominated performance in Moonlight, Ali starred as the evil Cornell (“Cottonmouth”) Stokes in the Marvel superhero series Luke Cage and as the love interest of mathematician Katherine Johnson (played by Taraji P. Moonlight is a 2016 American drama film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture surprise. Barry Jenkins, the film’s director and cowriter, was praised for his compassionate portrayal of complex individuals. It portrays the storey of a young black guy coming to terms with his homosexual impulses, based on Tarell Alvin McCraney’s unpublished play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. It was the first film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture with a completely African-American cast, as well as the first with a homosexual main character.

Moonlight is a three-act play set in Miami’s underprivileged Liberty City neighbourhood, depicted in dazzling, luminous colours. Juan gives him back to his mother (Naomie Harris), a crack addict who is emotionally abusive to him. Juan and Teresa form a second family for Chiron, who struggles to fit in with the other boys in the neighbourhood despite the efforts of a buddy, Kevin (Jaden Piner).

Chiron (now played by Ashton Sanders) is in high school in the second act, where he is bullied by Terrel (Patrick Decile). His mother’s addiction has worsened, and he is being cared for by Teresa, despite the fact that his mentor Juan is no longer alive. Chiron had a sexual encounter with Kevin on the seashore one night (now played by Jharrel Jerome). Terrel then manipulates Kevin into knocking Chiron to the ground, where Terrel and his cohort kick and beat him. Chiron strides into the classroom and slams a chair at Terrel when he returns to school. Chiron is then handcuffed and taken away.

Ali portrayed the title character’s uncle in the critically acclaimed animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). In the third season of True Detective, he successfully lobbied for the lead part, which he played as a police detective investigating the abduction of two children (2019). Ali won his second Emmy nomination for his performance. In 2020, he starred in the TV series Ramy, for which he received another Emmy nomination for his portrayal of a Sufi guru.
