Maude Adams, born Maude Kiskadden, was an American actress best known for portraying Sir James Barrie’s heroines. She was born on November 11, 1872, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and died on July 17, 1953, in Tannersville, New York.

Taking the maiden name of her mother, the foremost lady of Salt Lake City’s stock firm. From her debut appearance as Little Schneider in Fritz at the San Francisco Theatre when she was just five years old, Adams has played kid parts. E.H. Sothern hired her as an ingenue in 1888. Her popularity skyrocketed with her appearance in C.H. Hoyt’s Midnight Bell (1889). When John Drew left Augustin Daly for Charles Frohman’s theatre company in 1892, she became Frohman’s leading lady and stayed there for five years. A Frohman star since 1897, she was particularly successful in The Little Minister, Peter Pan, what every woman knows, and Quality Street.

She also appeared in Schiller’s Die Jungfrau von Orleans as Joan of Arc and Shakespeare’s Juliet, Viola, and Rosalind. After retiring from acting in 1918, she dabbled in stage lighting for a while before making a comeback in 1931 as Portia in Otis Skinner’s Shylock. She appeared one final time in 1934 as Maria in Twelfth Night. On July 1, 1937, she was appointed to the Stephens College faculty as a professor of dramatic arts and design.

John Michael Barrie’s Peter Pan was originally staged in 1904 as The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up by Scottish dramatist J.M. Barrie. The Little White Bird (1902) by J.M. Barrie introduced the title character, but it is his role as Peter Pan’s hero that has made him a household name. When the play was first written in three acts, it was frequently reworked, and the final version was released in 1928. The character of Peter Pan, the ever-young boy, was introduced into English-speaking folklore as a result of this work.

Wendy, John, and Michael Darling are about to retire to bed when Peter Pan and the fairies Tinker Bell appear in their London nursery, interrupting their peaceful slumber. This time, Peter is here to get his shadow back, which he misplaced there before. According to Peter, in Never Land, he serves as captain of the Lost Boys, a group of children who were abandoned by their mothers because their nurses were distracted. As Wendy and her brothers fly to Never Land with Peter, they encounter the Lost Boys, a crocodile that Peter Pan fed an arm to, and a band of “Tiger Lilies” who want to eat them.

They also encounter Peter’s sworn enemy, Captain Hook, and a crocodile who has swallowed the clock that can be heard ticking when the beast is near. There appears to be no reciprocal interest on Peter’s part. There are both magical escapades and pirate-themed assaults going on all the time. Eventually, the Darling children decide to return home with the Lost Boys, but they are kidnapped by the pirates on their way.. Peter Pan saves the boys and Wendy, who is chained to the mast, and the boys slay all the pirates. Finally, the children return to London, where Peter Pan is left to relive his boyhood fantasies.

The play was inspired by Barrie’s storytelling and fantasy games with Sylvia and Arthur Llewellyn Davies’ five sons. While Gerald du Maurier—brother Sylvia’s and the father of writer Daphne du Maurier—played both Mr. Darling and Captain Hook in the first production in 1904, Nina Boucicault was cast in the part of Peter Pan in the second. Both in London and in New York, where it premiered in 1905 and included American actress Maude Adams as Peter, it was a huge hit. Peter and Wendy, Barrie’s novelization of the play, was later enlarged and revised by the author (1911).

Betty Bronson played Peter in the first film (1924) of the play. An animated feature film by Walt Disney (1953) depicts Peter as more pleasantly impish than the anarchical and greedy Peter depicted in J.K. Barrie’s play and novel. An award-winning Broadway production with Mary Martin as Peter Pan, directed by Jerome Robbins, and choreographed by Robbins won three Tony Awards. In 1955 and 1960, the play was made into a television show. Many productions have attempted to remove racial insensitivity from Tiger Lily and her companions “redskins” in Barrie’s Tiger Lily until the end of the 20th century when the narrative was first made into a film or stage play.
