The Memphis Grizzlies are a Western Conference team in the National Basketball Association (NBA). They are based in Memphis, Tennessee (NBA).

The Grizzlies were one of two Canadian franchises to enter the NBA in 1995 when the league expanded to include teams from the United States (the other being the Toronto Raptors). They wasted six years in Vancouver, winning only 19 games over four seasons and finishing last in their division in five of those seasons. After seeing a drop in attendance and revenue, the Grizzlies’ owners moved the team to Memphis in 2001.

Pau Gasol, a Spanish center who would become the Grizzlies’ first All-Star, was drafted by the team during their first drought. In 2002, when the team was already well-known, it hired NBA icon Jerry West to serve as general manager. Despite Memphis’s previous difficulties, the team made its first postseason participation in franchise history in the 2003–04 season, 22 wins better than in the previous year. This was largely due to West’s efforts.

Like in 2004–05 and 2005–06, the Grizzlies’ season ended after the first round of the playoffs. It was a short-lived victory for Memphis as they went on to finish dead last in the 2006-07 season. Both West and Gasol left the Grizzlies in 2007 and 2008 as the team started its rebuilding phase.

The Memphis Grizzlies returned to the postseason in 2010–11 thanks to the efforts of players like Zach Randolph and Rudy Gay, and they won their first playoff series in six games. In 2012–13, the Grizzlies made history thanks to the efforts of Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol (Pau’s brother), and a young, defensive-minded squad.

Memphis made the playoffs the next several years, but the aging roster produced diminishing returns. That year, the Grizzlies finished the regular season with a 42-40 record despite playing with only 28 players due to severe injuries. They were swept by the Spurs in the first round of the playoffs. Several significant player injuries contributed to the squad finishing with the lowest record in the division (22-60) in the 2017–18 season.

To this day, Memphis remains the county seat of Shelby County, Tennessee, of which it has been a part since 1819. This charming community straddles the border between Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee on the Chickasaw bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. The Memphis metropolitan area is the most populous in Tennessee and the state’s second-largest.

West Memphis, Arkansas; Arlington, Tennessee; Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland, and Millington; Horn Lake, Olive Branch, and Southaven, Mississippi; and Memphis itself are just a few of the many suburbs around Memphis. Size: 295 square meters (764 square km). The city proper is home to 690,743 inhabitants, while the greater Memphis metro region is home to 1,205,204.

Hernando de Soto, a Spanish explorer, came to the area in 1541. After a brief occupation by French (1739) and Spanish (1795) forts, the United States built Fort Adams there in 1797. Before Memphis was established there in 1819, the area was inhabited by the Chickasaw people. Andrew Jackson, the future president of the United States, was one of its original founders. Memphis’ name was taken from that of an ancient Egyptian city with the same meaning.

Memphis’ rapid development can be attributed to the growing cotton industry in the South, as well as the city’s convenient location near both rail and water transportation. Corporate formation occurred in 1826. The Confederate military bastion was captured by a Union naval force on June 6, 1862, and held until the end of the American Civil War. One of the largest racial disturbances in American history occurred on May 18, 1866.

Memphis, Tennessee, grew rapidly after the Civil War to become the South’s premier cotton trading post. More than 5,000 people were killed when yellow fever swept through the city in the 1870s. The city lost its charter in 1879 because it ran out of money due to declining tax receipts and population. After extensive improvements to sanitation, continued cotton trafficking, and the emergence of a hardwood market, the city received a new charter in 1893.

Economic expansion was hastened after WWII. During the 1960s, the city was profoundly affected by the civil rights movement.  Following its rebranding as the National Civil Rights Museum in 1991, King’s motel room became part of the permanent exhibition.
