Mercer Mayer (born December 30, 1943) is a children’s book author and illustrator from the United States. He has nearly 300 books under his belt, with a diverse range of graphical techniques. Mayer’s Little Critter and Little Monster series of books are his most well-known works.
Mayer was born in the Arkansas city of Little Rock. Because his father was in the US Navy, his family moved around a lot during his childhood before landing in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mayer earned his secondary school diploma there in 1961. Mayer decided to pursue a career in children’s book illustration while attending school at the Honolulu Museum of Art. To that goal, he compiled a portfolio of sketches and distributed them as widely as he could. Mayer was undeterred by his lecturers’ fears that he would never be competent enough to make a living as an illustrator.
In 1964, Mayer relocated from Hawaii to New York City, where he continued his education at the Art Students League of New York, where he met Marianna, his first wife. Mayer also met an art director who warned him that his portfolio was so awful that he needed to discard it. Mayer did, despite being upset. The artist constructed a whole new portfolio in his leisure time while working at an advertising firm. These new sketches persuaded Dial Press and Harper & Row editors to hire him as an illustrator.
Mayer’s debut novel, A Boy, a Dog, and a Frog, was released by Dial Press in 1967. It was notable for being a picture book with no words—one that communicates its storey exclusively through graphics. Mayer is credited as one of the first illustrators to use this approach. There were five more volumes in the series after that. If I Had a Gorilla, a documentary promoting the benefits of owning an ape, was also made by him.
Mayer’s book There’s a Nightmare in My Closet was inspired by his childhood worries of creatures lurking in his closet at night. Although critics compared the book unfavourably to Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are (ironically, Mayer and Sendak were friends), children and their parents adored the storey, and it became extremely successful, with at least 14 versions published since 1968 and a spot on Reading Rainbow. An animated special was created that exactly followed the book and added two minor sequences where the youngster is playing outside at sunset and reflecting on how the monster will soon arrive, as well as placing his planes and toy soldiers around the closet to form a “defence army.” Michael J. Fox provided the voice for the boy’s inner monologue. The titular nightmare creature also appeared in Alice Cooper’s “Welcome to My Nightmare” music video.
In 1976, Mayer joined Golden Publishing, the company that created Little Golden Books. He has sold his “Little Critter” and “Little Monster” series, which are popular among young readers, through them.
