On September 19, 1969, Michael Symon entered this world in Cleveland, Ohio. Producer and actor best known for his roles in Symon’s Dinners Cooking Out (2020), The Chew (2011), and Burgers, Brew, & ‘Que (both as himself) (2015). Symon grew up in North Olstead, despite being a Cleveland, Ohio, native. The Midwestern upbringing he had, combined with his family’s Greek, Sicilian, and Eastern European roots, informed his unique style of cuisine. Before attending the Culinary Institute of America in New York, young Symon got his feet wet in the professional kitchen by working part-time at Geppetto’s Pizza and Ribs.

Symon went back to his hometown of Cleveland after finishing school, where he gained notoriety at restaurants like Player’s in Lakewood, Piccolo Mondo, and Caxton Cafe. Lola, his first restaurant with his future wife Liz Shanahan, was established in Cleveland’s hip Tremont neighborhood in 1997.

The opening of Lola was met with widespread acclaim, solidifying Tremont’s status as a hipster haven and further establishing Symon as one of America’s most celebrated chefs. Lola, one of Symon’s most famous restaurants, was a modern bistro that specialized in updated versions of classic Midwestern dishes. Almost immediately after Lola’s 1997 opening, Symon began receiving accolades, including a Best New Chef award from Food & Wine in 1998. Since then, Lola has been awarded Cleveland’s best restaurant no fewer than 18 times and has been named one of America’s best restaurants by Gourmet magazine. Although Lola relocated to downtown Cleveland from Tremont in 2006, it will regrettably shut down for good in November 2020 because to the financial demands of the coronavirus epidemic.
