Michael Symon

On September 19, 1969, Michael Symon entered this world in Cleveland, Ohio. Producer and actor best known for his roles in Symon’s Dinners Cooking Out (2020), The Chew (2011), and Burgers, Brew, & ‘Que (both as himself) (2015). Since their wedding day of November 1, 1998, he has been happily married to Liz Symon. They’re a one-child family.

Symon grew up in North Olstead, despite being a Cleveland, Ohio, native. The Midwestern upbringing he had, combined with his family’s Greek, Sicilian, and Eastern European roots, informed his unique style of cuisine. Before attending the Culinary Institute of America in New York, young Symon got his feet wet in the professional kitchen by working part-time at Geppetto’s Pizza and Ribs.

Symon went back to his hometown of Cleveland after finishing school, where he gained notoriety at restaurants like Player’s in Lakewood, Piccolo Mondo, and Caxton Cafe. Lola, his first restaurant with his future wife Liz Shanahan, was established in Cleveland’s hip Tremont neighborhood in 1997.

The opening of Lola was met with widespread acclaim, solidifying Tremont’s status as a hipster haven and further establishing Symon as one of America’s most celebrated chefs. Lola, one of Symon’s most famous restaurants, was a modern bistro that specialized in updated versions of classic Midwestern dishes. Almost immediately after Lola’s 1997 opening, Symon began receiving accolades, including a Best New Chef award from Food & Wine in 1998. Since then, Lola has been awarded Cleveland’s best restaurant no fewer than 18 times and has been named one of America’s best restaurants by Gourmet magazine. Although Lola relocated to downtown Cleveland from Tremont in 2006, it will regrettably shut down for good in November 2020 because to the financial demands of the coronavirus epidemic.

Still, Symon is the chef-owner of a number of other popular establishments, such as the Detroit steakhouse Roast, which was named Restaurant of the Year by the Detroit Free Press, and the burger chain B-Spot, which has won the People’s Choice Award at the SoBe Wine and Food Festival five times and been named to the “Top 10 Burger Joints” lists published by Bon Appetit and Food & Wine.

In addition to Mabel’s BBQ, which has locations in both Cleveland and Las Vegas, and Sara’s, a speakeasy supper club accessible through Mabel’s BBQ in Vegas, he also owns Angeline, an Italian restaurant within the Borgata Hotel, Casino, and Spa in Atlantic City; Bar Symon, which has locations in various US airport lounges; and Mabel’s BBQ, which has locations in both Cleveland and Las Vegas.

Symon has earned the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: Great Lakes, and he has written six cookbooks, four of which have been on The New York Times Best Seller list. In addition to his culinary accomplishments, he has widely recognized as a TV personality thanks to his hosting gigs on shows like Burgers, Brew & ‘Que, Cook Like an Iron Chef, Dinner: Impossible, and Food Feuds, as well as his 2008 victory in the first season of The Next Iron Chef.

Not only is he the resident chef on Good Morning America, but he also used to co-host the Emmy-winning talk show The Chew. There’s a reason why Symon’s dishes are so well-liked. These are real classics given the gourmet treatment; they’re easy to make at home, and they’re full of big, Midwestern flavors, so the whole family is sure to appreciate them. We’ve included links to Symon’s website, where you can get the entire recipe for some of our favorite dishes.

This vegan mac and cheese may come as a surprise from a meat-loving chef like Symon, but the flavor is preserved owing to some ingenious seasoning. This is the ultimate comfort food with its golden-brown herb crumb and cheesy herb sauce.

Incredibly versatile, this chili packs a serious punch and tastes great. You can use any combination of beans and meat you choose, or substitute chopped eggplant for the meat to make it vegetarian. Accompany with lime wedges, sliced jalapeno, chopped avocado, and fresh cilantro.

Warming and hearty, this barley stew is loaded with chunky veggies and herbs and is a more nutritional way to eat your favorite handmade burger.

Yet another flavorful stew, this one has aromatic celery, garlic, and onion along with lentils, potato, carrot, herb, and spice toppings and a deliciously runny fried egg. Any kind of ground meat or sausage can be used, or the meat can be omitted entirely to make this a vegetarian meal.

Easy and delicious chicken and beans cooked in a flavorful tomato sauce in a single casserole dish. That’s the simplest thing that might happen.

While Symon is known for his straightforward, home-cooked cuisine, he was among a select group of chefs to test the Impossible Burger 2.0, the 2019 upgrade of Impossible Foods’ ‘blendable’ plant-based burger, at his gourmet burger concept, B Spot.

Michael Symon, the proprietor of the highly regarded Lola and Lolita restaurants in Cleveland, is a celebrity chef who is also beloved by Clevelanders. Michael’s credentials began in 1990 when he graduated from New York’s prestigious Culinary Institute of America. Michael soon began reinvigorating the Cleveland palette while honing his skills at Player’s, Piccolo Mondo, Giovanni’s, and The Caxton Café, four of Cleveland’s most promising new eateries. Success and a dedicated fan base followed him to these platforms.

Together with his future wife, Liz, Michael launched their own restaurant called Lola in 1997. Lola, located in Cleveland’s Historic Tremont neighborhood to the west of downtown, has debuted to rave reviews. Liz introduced an unassuming elegance to the restaurant’s design and distinctive wine choices from smaller, boutique vineyards to compliment Michael’s menu, turning Lola into Cleveland’s destination of the year. Michael, Liz, and Doug Petkovic established Lolita in 2005 after conceptualizing a new take on the name “Lola.” With the 2006 reopening of Lola on E. 4th St. in the center of downtown Cleveland, they once again became the cornerstone and darling of the Cleveland dining scene, while also revitalizing a new area of Cleveland.

He is an Emmy-winning TV host on Food Network and the Cooking Channel, a celebrated author, and a pioneer in the fields of both cuisine and lifestyle by fusing his Southern Italian heritage with the distinctive traits of Napa Valley living.

In 1985, just three years after he graduated from the CIA, Michael was named Chef of the Year by Food & Wine. In 1995, he was elected Chef of the Year by the CIA, and in 2011, he was honored as Alumni of the Year. Growing up in a family with roots in Greece, Sicily, and Eastern Europe meant that food always played a central role in his upbringing. After a broken arm terminated Michael’s competitive wrestling career in high school, he turned to the kitchen. After finishing up at the CIA, Michael came back to Cleveland where he worked at Players, Piccolo Mondo, Giovanni’s, and The Caxton Cafe before opening Lola Bistro in 1997 and Lolita in 2005. He also created the Michael Symon Live to Cook Collection of cookware for Weston and designed and created the Michael Symon Cutlery line in collaboration with Ergo Chef. In 2009, Symon and Ruhlman teamed up to publish Symon’s debut cookbook, Live to Cook: Recipes & Techniques to Rock Your Kitchen. Carnivore: 120 Recipes for Meat Lovers was published in 2012 by Michael.

Following the success of his first cookbook, Michael Symon’s 5 in 5: 5 Fresh Ingredients + 5 Minutes = 120 Fantastic Dinners (2013), he released a follow-up in 2015 titled Michael Symon’s 5 in 5 For Every Season: 165 Quick Dinners, Sides, Holiday Dishes, and More, which was inspired by a segment on the first season of The Chew. Michael Symon’s Playing with Fire: BBQ and More from the Grill, Smoker, and Fireplace was published in 2018 with the help of Douglas Trattner.
