Major League Baseball team the Minnesota Twins, based in Minneapolis, MN and a member of AL (AL). Washington, D.C. was home to the Senators (1901–60) before the team relocated to Minneapolis in 1961. Three World Series triumphs (1924, 1987, and 1991) and six American League championships have been achieved by the team.

The Washington Senators were one of the original eight American League franchises when they were established in 1901. Between 1903 and 1911, the Senators had some of the worst winning percentages in baseball history, finishing last or second-to-last in nine straight seasons. “Washington—first in war, first in peace, and last in the American League” was a memorable phrase coined by a newspaperman. A 2.17 earned run average from pitcher Walter Johnson was the one bright spot for these Senator teams.

His entire 21-year major league career was spent in Washington. On July 12, 1924, Johnson and then-Senator goose Gosse Goslin led Washington to their first pennant triumph and World Series championship. The Senators defeated the New York Giants by a score of 3-2 in extra innings to claim their first pennant and World Series title since 1921.

Both the Senators’ visits in the World Series in 1925 and 1933 ended in defeat.A tremendous power hitter like Harmon Killebrew wasn’t enough to resuscitate a team that had been languishing at the bottom of the AL standings since its last playoff appearance in 1933, even though the Senators had re-established themselves as perennial losers. In 1961, the Senators moved to Minneapolis, which was then a booming baseball market.

Tony Oliva and Jim Kaat joined Killebrew as the team’s studs when the franchise has renamed the Twins, and they advanced to the World Series in 1965. A future seven-time American League batting champion, Minnesota signed Rod Carew in 1967. In 1969 and 1970, Carew, Oliva, and Killebrew led the Twins to the AL Central Division championships and the AL Rookie of the Year award. A seven-game World Series triumph over the St. Louis Cards in 1987 marked the first time the Twins had a winning season since the 1970s and early 1980s.

In 1991, the Twins and Atlanta Braves shared the distinction of becoming the first “worst-to-first” turnarounds in modern baseball history when they competed in the “Fall Classic,” a game that pitted the two teams against each other. There were four games in the World Series in which a home team hit a game-winning home run. Both games six and seven of the series went to extra innings, with Puckett’s 11th-inning home run and Morris’s 10-inning complete-game shutout putting the Twins in a position to avoid elimination.

Commissioner Bud Selig advocated the expulsion of the Minnesota Twins and the Montreal Expos from the Major League Baseball in 2001 because they were two of the league’s least profitable franchises. By being compelled to play out their lease at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in 2002, the Twins essentially removed the threat of relocation and gave the team time to plan for a more profitable baseball-only venue (Target Field, which opened in 2010).

There have been three successive AL Central Division championships for the Minnesota Twins since 2002, however, the team has never made it to the World Series on each occasion. After a two-year absence from the playoffs, the Minnesota Twins claimed their second division title in 2009 but lost in the first round. There were multiple last-place divisional finishes for the Minnesota Twins after they won the AL Central Championship in 2010. In 2016, the club finished with a record of 59–103, which was the poorest since the squad relocated to Minnesota.

Minnesota Twins Biography/Wiki

It was the greatest major league turnaround of all time, with the Twins winning 85 games in the next season to qualify for the AL Wild Card Game. The first time a team had a season with at least 100 defeats and made the playoffs at the same time. In 2018, the Minnesota Timberwolves won 78 games, but they were way outside the postseason picture. With a record-setting 307 home runs in 2019, the Minnesota Twins set a major league record with 101 wins (the most for the team since 1965).

After all, Minnesota was beaten in its first postseason game. The Twins’ playoff failure continued in the truncated 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, when they were swept in the Wild Card round, extending their losing record to 18 games, the longest such streak in North American major team sports history.

Tristram E. Speaker, better known as Tris Speaker, was an American professional baseball player and manager who played and managed for the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians during the course of a 22-year career (1907–28). The two finest players of this era, Speaker and Ty Cobb, are often regarded as the best.
