Melissa Elliott was born in the United States on July 1, 1971, in Portsmouth, Virginia. She is the only child of Patricia Elliott, a dispatcher for a power corporation, and Ronnie Elliott, a retired U.S. Marine. Elliott came from a family of church choir members, so singing was a natural part of her childhood. She wanted to be a performer when she was four years old, and she “would sing and dance for her family,” according to biographer Veronica A. Davis. She worried that no one would take her seriously in later years because she was still the class clown. The family lived in a manufactured home community in Jacksonville, North Carolina, while her father was an involved Marine. During this time in her life, Elliott blossomed. Despite her lack of interest in schoolwork, she enjoyed school because of the friendships she created. On intelligence tests, she scored well above average, and she was advanced two years ahead of her previous class. She became isolated as a result of her grade change, and she purposefully struggled, ultimately returning to her former class. They returned to Virginia after her father returned from the Marines, where they lived in abject poverty.

Following their departure from Swing Mob, Elliott and Timbaland collaborated as a songwriting/production team, writing songs for artists such as SWV, 702, and, most notably, Aaliyah. The hit singles “If Your Girl Only Knew,” “One in a Million,” “Hot Like Fire,” and “4 Page Letter” were all written and recorded by the duo for Aaliyah’s second album, One in a Million (1996).
Nearly all of the tracks on which Elliott and Timbaland collaborated included background vocals and/or guest raps. One in a Million went double platinum, and the production team became celebrities. Elliott and Timbaland continued to collaborate on songs for other artists, including Total’s “What About Us?” (1997), Nicole Wray’s “Make It Hot” (1998), Destiny’s Child’s “Get on the Bus” (1998), and Aaliyah’s “I Care 4 U,” which she released before her death in 2001. Elliott also co-wrote the majority of Total’s second and final album Kima, Keisha, and Pam, as well as Nicole Wray’s first album Make It Hot (both released in 1998).

The struggles of life in Virginia were numerous. Elliott discusses her father’s domestic violence. She declined to stay at friends’ houses for fear of finding her mother dead when she returned home. Elliott was molested by a cousin when she was eight years old. Ronnie Elliott dislocated his wife’s shoulders in one violent incident, and she was hit with a pistol in another. Elliott’s mother, who was fourteen at the time, wanted to end the ordeal by fleeing with her daughter under the guise of taking a joyride on a nearby bus. In fact, the couple had taken refuge at a relative’s house, where their belongings were stored in a U-Haul truck. Elliott confides in her that she was afraid her father would kill them both if they left.

Later, she said, “My mother realised how strong she was on her own after we left, and it inspired me to be strong as well. It was only after she had left her home that she realised this.” Elliott and her mother lived in Portsmouth, Virginia’s Hodges Ferry neighbourhood. Elliott earned his high school diploma from Manor High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1990.

Elliott and Katy Perry played at the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show in 2015. Elliott sang “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It,” and “Lose Control” in a medley. The show was well-received, and it helped improve Elliott’s digital sales that week, with a twenty-five-fold increase in album sales (to 2,000 units) and a ten-fold increase in sales of the three songs she performed (to 71,000 units) over the previous week. With 118.5 million viewers in the United States, it became the most viewed Super Bowl halftime show in NFL history. Elliott’s participation in the forthcoming remix of Diplo and Skrillex’s “Take Ü There” was announced on February 3, 2015. Elliott announced on February 11 that she was still working on her seventh studio album, Block Party, with Timbaland. During an episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on April 2, 2015, Pharrell Williams announced that he was working on Elliott’s album. “WTF (Where They From)” and its music video were released to digital outlets on November 12, 2015. The song and video had been streamed 6.1 million times in the United States alone by November 19, with an additional 16 million views per YouTube viewing.

Elliott has expressed her desire to start a family, but she is terrified of giving birth. She said in 2008, “I’m not sure I can handle so much suffering. Maybe in 2020 you might just pop a baby out and everything will be perfect. But for the time being, I’d rather adopt.”

Elliott and her father talk on the phone every now and then, but the rapper claims she hasn’t forgiven him for the domestic abuse she experienced against her mother.

Elliott told People magazine in June 2011 that her withdrawal from the music industry was due to Graves’ disease, a hyperthyroidism condition. She was diagnosed after she almost wrecked her car while driving due to extreme leg spasms. She had serious effects from the illness, and she couldn’t even compose songs because she couldn’t carry a pen. Her symptoms improved after surgery.
