There’s a phrase in figurative skating that jumpers cannot be artists and that artists cannot be jumps, full of truth and falsehood.”When one side is so fantastic, people can assume that the other side is too short,” stated Scott Hamilton, Olympic winner in 1984.
At 18, Nathan Chen of Salt Lake City was essentially the pioneering jumper who became the lone American gold medal contestant and was the first person to make five jumps of four revolutions – known as quads – in a single routine. But quads alone won’t put him on the podium for the medals.
Skating’s system of scoring involves a hungry accumulation of victory points, giving numerical worth to each element of a performance: leaps; spins; flow, glide; intricate footwork; translation into performance of music and choreography and the purpose and design for moving through the ice.
So Chen, a boy who has studied classical ballet for six years, trained for the 2018 Winter Olympics for months, with a plan for both ice development and a revolution in the air.
In an attempt to reconcile athletics and art, Chen collaborated with two well-known choreographers on skating, contacted a blade specialist to refine his skating edge and recruited Vera Wang to design his outfits. He even trimmed the young wave off his hair, trying to look more adult and purposeful.Chen joked during the United States championships last week. “The curl is gone, but I guess it makes me more aerodynamic, so that’s okay.”
After some hesitation, given the subjectivity of skating, which is a sport for the judges to pick winning players and reprove what they regard to be openly political activities, Chen decided to participate in the 2009 film “Mao’s Last Dancer” for his free Olympic skating.
It is based on a similar-name memoir that portrays the hard infancy, surprising discovery, the sharp separation of the family and the ultimate freedom and success of dancer Li Cunxin.
The novel has several loose parallels with the immigration from China of Chen’s parents as they looked for medical jobs. In November, Chen talked to Li on the phone for tips on performances and to understand the drive of the dancer. He became deeply aware of Li’s perseverance.
“I had a lot of suffering and difficulties, and perhaps that’s not super-parallel with my life,” said Chen over several months in a series of interviews. “But I believe that I can relate to the mentality of driving everything. Li’s really hard; he’s fazed by nothing. I can definitely learn from that and I don’t allow my emotions get in the way.”
Chen showed a lot more flair with a breakaway season a year ago and a sixth place finish of the 2017 World Championships last spring, “but it wasn’t enough,” said Tara Lipinski, women’s Olympic champion of 1998, who today commented on the NBC.
If the US skater seeks gold at his debut Olympics, his quads are vital.Lipinski added that the first time she met Chen this year she was amazed by his artistic growth.
“To achieve that sometimes takes a few of years,” she continued. “He has ballet training, however. That’s helpful. He’s got a lovely, classic phrase.” Chen was the only undefeated skater on the international Grand Prix circuit in the preparation for the Olympics. This is his moment. This is his moment. There is no doubt that he will be fit or will be interested in skating for the next Olympics in four years. A suggested rule that devalues quad leaps after certain games could be enforced. All he’s doing now has a kind of feverish drive.
“He realises he doesn’t have a lot of time to bring it all together,” Lipinski added. “He balances the technical and aesthetic side to offer himself an opportunity to win.”
Chen practised on his brief show Friday with Choreographer Shae-Lynn Bourne, Canada’s 2003 World Ice Dancing Champion. Propulsive music is Benjamin Clementine’s experimental pop. The track title — “Nemesis” — was not intended to deliberately insinuate competition with the incumbent Olympic champion, Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan, but to indicate the desire of Chen and distinguish him from his competitors, who skate in classic pieces.
His suit is a unitard with no sequins, which gives Chen a bobsledder- or speed-athletic skater’s look. White lines on the chest and arms shape his two quad jumps and strong corner movement.
“It is perfect for him. It is perfect for him. He’s passionate. He’s passionate. He is thrilling throughout,” remarked Johnny Weir, the two-time NBC announcement partner for Olympians and Lipinski, describing Chen’s short programme. “He can reach a building’s top rafter. That’s what an artist must do, ultimately; you must sell the cheap seats.”
