Neil deGrasse Tyson was born on 5 October 1958 in Manhattan as a middle child with two siblings. His mother was a gerontologist, Sunchita Feliciano Tyson; his father was a sociologist, Cyril deGrasse Tyson.

Neil grew up from 1972 to 1976 at the Bronx High School of Science and, after a school trip to a planetarium, became interested in astronomy. Later he participated in the Hayden Planetarium astronomy courses. His passion for astronomy so much was that Dr. Carl Sagan of Cornell University personally tried to invite him to study. Tyson, however, chose to study Physics at Harvard University. He was awarded his Bachelor of Arts in Physics in 1980.

Tyson continued his postgraduate studies at Austin University of Texas. In 1983, he received a Master’s degree in astronomy. He studied Philosophy and Astrophysics at the University of Columbia in 1989. Two years later, he obtained his doctorate in astrophysics.

Tyson’s research was mainly focused on stellar evolution, cosmology, galactic astronomy, and stellar formation thanks to his fascination for astronomy. He has worked as a scientist at the University of Maryland, American Museum of Natural History, Hayden Planetarium, and Princeton University.

Tyson has also published several books and articles including the Natural History magazine column “Universe.” The name “Manhattanhenge” was coined in 2002 and used to describe the 2 days in a year when the setting sun would align with Manhattan’s street grids, making sunset easy to see in clear side streets.

In 2001 Tyson became a member of the United States Aerospace Industry Future Commission. Two years later, he served on the President’s Implementation Committee of the United States Space Exploration Policy, which is commonly called the Commission on the Moon, Mars, and Beyond. He has received NASA’s Distinguished Public Service Medal, NASA’s highest honor.

Neil deGrasse Tyson photoTyson has made several appearances on TV as a popularizer of science. In 2004 he hosted the four-part “Nova” mini-series of PBS. Together with Donald Goldsmith, Tyson also co-wrote other “Nova” episodes called “Cosmic Evolution’s Origins: Fourteen Billion Years” and “400 Years of Telescope.” Tyson also hosted the PBS program NOVA ScienceNow until 2011.

Tyson became a regular part of “The Universe,” a popular series from The History Channel, due to his universe-living love, his usual cheerful self, and his wisdom and lively character.

Tyson has his views on spirituality, religion, and science, as well as on “The Perimeter of Ignorance” as well as “Holy Wars” in his essays. Both these works were published in the magazine Natural History. He remains a supporter of the National Aeronautics and Space (NASA) and hopes to expand their operations. In 1988, Tyson married Alice Young and had two children, Miranda and Travis. Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American astrophysicist, cosmologist, writer, and communicator of science.

Born and raised in New York City, after a visit to the Hayden Planetarium, Tyson became interested in astronomy at the age of 9. After finishing his studies at the Bronx High School of Science, where he worked as a head editor of the Physical Science Journal, he graduated with a B.A. in Physics from Harvard University in 1980. After graduating in astronomy from Austin, the University of Texas in 1983, he obtained his master’s in astrophysics (1989) and his ph.D. (1991) from Columbia University in astrophysics. He was a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University for the next three years. In 1994 he joined the Hayden Planetarium as a research scientist and visiting scientist and lecturer at the Princeton Faculty. In 1996, he was appointed director of the planetarium and supervised its reconstruction project of 210 million dollars completed in 2000.

In his book Death by Black Hole, Tyson wrote monthly essays in the “Universe” column for the journal Natural History from 1995 to 2005. (2007). In the same period, he has written in StarDate magazine a monthly column, answering questions about the universe under the pen name “Merlin.” In his books Merlin’s Tour of the Universe (1998) and Just Visiting This Planet, material from the column appeared (1998). Tyson served on the U.S. Aerospace Industry future commission in 2001 and on the Moon, Mars, and Beyond commission in 2004. In the same year, he was awarded the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal.

In 2014 he hosted the Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey television series, which succeeded the 1980 Carl Sagan series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. Tyson regularly appears as a science communicator on television, radio, and several other media outlets.

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, one of America’s leading scientists, has shared much of his career with others. He has a great talent for clearly and accessibly presenting complex concepts.

After his studies at Harvard University, he received his Ph.D. in 1991. Before becoming its director, Tyson went to work for the Hayden Planetarium in 1996. He also hosted the NOVA ScienceNow and the StarTalk Radio podcast. Today Tyson continues to be a popular TV scientist. Born 5 October 1958 in New York City, Tyson discovered his love of the stars at an early age. At the age of nine, he made his first taste of stars in the Hayden Planetarium in the Museum of Natural History. Later, Tyson took classes at the Planetarium and had his own telescope. As a teenager, he was watching the skies from his building’s roof.

Tyson graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1976, an excellent student. He then graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor of physics and a Ph.D. in astrophysics from Columbia University in 1991. The 210 million dollars project was completed in 2000 and the revised site gave visitors a pioneering overview of astronomy. One of the most controversial decisions of Tyson at that time was to remove Pluto from the planet display. He classified Pluto as a dwarf planet, which called on visitors to respond strongly. While some requested the planet, Pluto, back, Tyson was led by the International Astronomical Union in 2006. Pluto was officially labeled as a dwarf planet.

Tyson has found other ways to improve scientific literacy in the country in addition to his work on the planetarium. “One of my aims is to bring the universe down to earth in such a way that the audience wants more,” he said once. From 2006 to 2011, Tyson took his message to the airwaves, hosting the NOVA ScienceNow documentary series. Besides breaking down barriers between scientists and the public, Tyson has also introduced astrophysics into diversity. In his field, he is one of the few African Americans.

Tyson is now one of the most demanding scientists. He talks throughout the country and is a favorite of the media when a major science issue is reported. Tyson is known for his ability to make difficult concepts, his oratory skills, and his sense of humor available to all people, which has led to appearances at shows like Real Time with Bill Maher, The Colbert Report, and The Daily Show.

Tyson was the managing editor of a 13-episode TV series titled Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey in 2014. The series restarted Cosmos, the classical science documentary. Carl Sagan was the host in the original version and offered a wider understanding of the origins of life and of our universe.

Tyson has written various general public books including Death by Black Hole and Other Cosmic Quandaries (2006) and The Pluto Files: the Favorite Planet of America (2009). He followed a collection of his answers to fans and critics in Letters from an astrophysicist after breaking down complex scientific concepts in astrophysics for people in hurries (2017). (2019).

In late 2018 Patheos, the website of religion and spirituality reported that the popular astrophysicist was accused of sexual misconduct by three women. Tyson answered by a long Facebook post in which he contested the facts of the events of each woman and welcomed further inquiries. In August 2019, Cosmos and StarTalk released a joint statement by Fox and National Geographic Networks which indicated they had completed investigations and continued to feature the Tyson programs.

T is in fact a religious minority that rejects or feels threatened by science or that wishes to reverse or restrict the scope of science. The rest, you know, is all very well with science. And this has always been the way since the beginning. And by the way, there is no tradition that scientists knock at the door, the school door on Sunday, telling their preacher what to teach. There is no tradition of scientists picketing outside churches nor should any [emergent] tradition of religious fundamentalist seeking to change the science classroom curriculum. For centuries, there has been a happy coexistence.

And it would be unfortunate to change that now. Because I saw this in other countries and the other countries, where the consequences are that you just return to the grotto basically because you land thereby undermining the scientific and technological innovation when you are a well-trained scientist or technologist. Consider that 40% of American scientists in America are religious. So that notion… that if you are a scientist, you’re an atheist, you’re not a scientist, if you are religious, it’s just empirically false. It’s a false statement empirically.

And religiously, you can ask the question in an unambiguous manner. You don’t ask, well, every Sunday you go to the church because lots of people go to church, like the pie, you know, or after the service, to the social scene. You are asking people, you are praying [to a man or] to God. If you say yes, you are, presumably, religious by the standards of your behavior. And it’s the “yes” to the question for 40% of scientists. There are many atheists, therefore, who are scientists or not. There may be a conflict, but a lot of people coexist in both worlds in this country.

My big fear is that intelligent aliens have actually visited us, but they did not contact us, concluded that there is no sign of smart life on earth. We sent out signals before we did it intentionally. Our early TV shows like ‘Howdy Doody’ and ‘I Love Lucy’ and ‘The Honeymooners.’ These are our emissaries of culture.

If I’d always call myself a “doctor,” you’d have to believe what I said because of my authority. But, in fact, you never have to reference the title again if what I say is fundamentally true and you understand why it is true.
