On November 12, 1945, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Neil Percival Young was born to sports writer Scott Alexander Young and DAR member Edna Blow Ragland “Rassy” Young. After the Gold Rush (1970) and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (1969) are two of Young’s most memorable works from the 1970s, when he also dabbled with damaged, gorgeous meditation and chaotic guitar jams, with occasional detours into after-hours excesses, like on 1975’s Tonight’s the Night.
For a long time, Young would stick to this basic format, veering between a loud rock and quiet folk. From the 1990s, when he was called the Godfather of Grunge and worked with Pearl Jam, to his 2006 Iraq War protest album Living with War, to his 2015 environmental record The Monsanto Years with Promise of the Real, he has always felt obliged to address social injustices through his music. Throughout his career, Young was a vibrant, unpredictable presence, challenging himself and his audience. He frequently returned to his home base of Crazy Horse, who supported him on projects including Barn (2020) and the Rick Rubin-produced World Record (2022).
