A man of multiple talents, Oliver North has served in a wide variety of roles. On October 7, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas, Oliver Laurence North was born to Oliver Clay North (an Army major) and Ann Theresa. Named Oliver Laurence North, it was a noble moniker. He grew up in New York City’s Philmont area. In 1961, he graduated from Ockawamick High School. Following that, he attended the State University of New York at Brockport in Brockport, New York, for two years to further his studies. He graduated from the Naval War College’s “Command and Staff Course” in Rhode Island in 1981 with a diploma. In 1968, he received a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, where he served until his discharge. During his time in Vietnam, he was promoted to platoon leader. Located in Quantico, Virginia, the United States Marine Corps’s Basic Institution provided instruction for aspiring Marine Corps officers. He got a job teaching the basics at this institution.

When Corporal Randy Herrod was on trial in 1970, he went to South Vietnam to testify against him. He testified as a witness. One of his former Marines, Herrod, was accused of murdering innocent Vietnamese people while serving under his leadership. After completing the United States Marine Corps Captain Candidate School in 1971, he was promoted to the rank of captain and assigned to serve as the commanding officer of the Northern Training Area in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. This task took place in Japan. After finishing his tour of service in Japan, he was commissioned to serve in the Headquarters of the Marine Corps in Arlington, Virginia, for the succeeding four years.

As time went on, he rose through the ranks to become a major and eventually an operations officer in the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment. In 1981, he took a job as the deputy director for political-military affairs at the National Security Council in Washington, DC. Over the course of the following three years, he was given the rank of lieutenant colonel. He handled the operation of the “1983 Beirut barracks bombing” case while serving as the deputy director for political-military relations at the National Security Council. A terrorist incident in Beirut was part of the case. The bombardment caused the death of 299 members of the armed forces, including both American and French personnel.

During his employment at the National Security Council, he took part in the 1983 invasion of Grenada, codenamed “Operation Urgent Fury.” Grenada is found in the Caribbean Islands. Additionally, he was the mastermind behind the bombing of Libya. It was believed that he had some connection to the Iran-Contra incident, in which American hostages were exchanged for weapons transferred to Iran. This was done so that the Contra insurgents in Nicaragua might receive covert aid. In 1988, he tendered his retirement from his employment as a Marine Corps commission officer. His probationary term occurred throughout the course of the last two years, and he completed his tasks at Headquarters Marine Corps in Arlington, Virginia.

He was convicted of 12 charges in 1989 relating to the Iran-Contra affair and given a suspended three-year sentence.  Three of the convictions that had been handed out were reversed in 1990. After an investigation the following year concluded that his “immunized congressional testimony” had unfairly influenced the witnesses, the charges against him were withdrawn. The witnesses against him were effectively protected by his testimony. His 1991 self-published book, Under Fire: An American Story, was a memoir about his time in the military.

Both the first season of the syndicated talk program ‘The Jerry Springer Show and the first season of the sitcom ‘Wings’ aired in the same year with him as a guest star. He was a contender for the Republican nomination for the United States Senate in the state of Virginia in the year 1994. Ultimately, he lost the election to the Democratic candidate, Charles Robb. Since 1995, he has been the presenter of the radio show titled “Oliver North Radio Show or Common Sense Radio,” which is broadcast on a national basis. Since the year 2001, he has been the anchor of the military history program titled ‘War Stories with Oliver North on Fox News.

Furthermore, he was a commentator on the Fox News program “Hannity.” He also had guest appearances on the TV series JAG. 2012’s “Call of Duty: Black Ops II,” a first-person shooter, credited him as the game’s military consultant. He married Betsy Stuart in 1967, and the couple eventually had four kids. In spite of his upbringing in the Catholic faith, he occasionally attends Anglican services with his relatives.
