Omar Apollo

Omar Apollo is the stage name of Mexican-American singer-songwriter Omar Apolonio Velasco, who was born on May 20, 1997, in Hobart, Indiana. Velasco is a dual citizen of the United States and Mexico. The name Apollo is more well recognized as his stage name. Both English and Spanish are used in his songs. Apollo is able to sing in both Greek and Latin. Writing songs and uploading them to the do-it-yourself streaming platform SoundCloud was how he first got his foot in the door of the music business.

During this time, not only was he working at Guitar Center and Jimmy John’s, but he was also occupying an attic as his place of residence. In 2017, he used the thirty dollars that he had borrowed from a friend in order to release his song “Ugotme” on Spotify. The track was featured in the Fresh Finds section of the website almost immediately after it was uploaded, and it swiftly racked up 20,000 plays in a single day. If we fast forward another year, we’ll see that the song has racked up more than 15 million streams by then. In 2018, he released his debut extended play named “Stereo,” which was likewise received with a great deal of praise from critics and fans alike.

In 2018, he began what was called the “Want Tour,” and in 2019, he started what was called the “Voyager Tour,” both of which took place in 2018 and 2019. During the “Voyager Tour,” which began in April 2019, he announced the release of his second extended play (EP), which was named Friends. He also started his very first tour of Europe in 2019, in addition to appearing at Lollapalooza in August of that same year. Late in 2019, Apollo released the songs “Fro” and “Hit Me Up.” Kenny Beats was credited as a contributor in the production area for both of these tracks, which were released together. In April of 2020, Apollo released the track known as “Imagine U,” which was another product of his cooperation with Kenny Beats.

On August 7, 2020, he disseminated the song “Stay back,” which was to become the first single taken from his first studio album. On September 10th, he shared his second song with the world, which was named “Kamikaze.” Apollo made his debut on the track “High Hopes,” which was included on the alternative R&B musician Joji’s second studio album named Nectar, which was released on September 25. Apollo made his debut on the track. Apollo released the songs “Dos Uno Nueve (219)” and “Want U Around” prior to the release of his first studio album, Apolonio, which occurred on October 16 of this year.

He had great pleasure in listening to music by some of his parents’ all-time favorite performers when he was growing up. These artists included Pedro Infante, Los Panchos, and The Beatles, among others. His musical preferences are shaped by a broad variety of performers, such as Neil Young, John Mayer, Prince, Bootsy Collins, and The Internet, to name just a few. When he was 12 years old, his parents presented him with a guitar as a gift; unfortunately, it was an electric guitar thatOmar Apollo pic did not come with an amplifier. He has been playing guitar ever since.

After that, he went to a pawn shop and traded it in for an acoustic guitar, which he eventually taught himself to play by looking up cover songs on YouTube and attempting to play along with them. After his first guitar was stolen when he was 15 years old, it took him a few years to save up for a new one and get back into playing guitar. The newer model that he eventually bought was one that had been manufactured more recently. When he finally decided to teach himself how to sing, he went to YouTube as a resource. Prior to this, he had received criticism about the quality of his voice from his father and other people.

Omar enrolled at Indiana University Northwest; however, he left after just two weeks because he had the feeling that there was something else he was meant to be doing and wanted to focus on music instead. Omar enrolled at Indiana University Northwest; however, he left after just two weeks because he had the feeling that there was something else he was meant to be doing Skating was a big part of Apollo Velasco’s childhood, and when he was 12 years old, his parents bought him his first guitar. Apollo, whose real name is Omar Velasco, was born in California. Apollo spent his childhood in Hobart, Indiana, which is also the location of his birth.

My first lesson on the instrument came from a Mexican uncle who was visiting from that country at the time, and in addition to that, I watched a steady diet of instructional videos on YouTube. Apollo had already begun creating his own music by the time he was a senior in high school and was doing it on the laptop he kept at home. After withdrawing from college in 2015, he made the decision to concentrate all of his efforts on pursuing a career in music. He draws motivation and ideas from a broad range of musicians, including David Bowie, D’Angelo, Cuco Sánchez, and a great number of others.

He is currently a musician on a full-time basis. In the beginning, he began his career by posting songs on the internet. Some of these songs, such as “[]” and “Brakelights,” were fairly successful. He embraced the encouragement he received from the favorable comments and started booking engagements, playing in locations like Bloomington, Indianapolis, and Chicago. The year 2018 saw the release of his first extended play, which was given the moniker Stereo and had songs sung in both English and Spanish. Prior to the release of the album, the singles “Rome” and “Erase” were both made available for purchase.

The following year saw the release of a second extended play named Friends, as well as a collaborative tune with Dominic Fike and Kenny Beats titled “Hit Me Up.” Both of these projects were released under the name Friends. The upbeat and positive song “Imagine U” was the first release that Apollo made in the year 2020. Later that year, he released the songs “Stay back” and “Kamikaze,” both of which were featured on his first studio album, which was named Apolonio and was his first full-length effort. Because of his collaboration with the Spanish artist C. Tangana on the song “Te Olvidaste,” he was nominated for two Latin Grammys in 2021: Record of the Year and Best Alternative Song.

Both of these nominations were for the song. These two prizes were given to different musicians and performers. IVORY was the second full-length album to be published by Apollo, and it was issued in April of 2022. Both Daniel Caesar and Kali Uchis appeared on the album in the capacity of special guests at various points. After doing some research into the many options that were open to him, he came to the realization that an acoustic guitar would serve his purposes the most effectively. According to Velasco’s version of the events, the two of them “went to the pawn shop, switched [the electric guitar] in, [and] got a $40 acoustic one.”After that, I did nothing more than go on to YouTube, where I “would watch other people post covers, and I would try to duplicate their fingers.” He explains. It was made up of Camp Rock’s renditions of other songs.

The speaker said, “I deadass was on that because I ain’t know nothing else but TV — we had a radio but I ain’t have no Wi-Fi or anything else yet, so it was just what was on the TV.” “I ain’t have no Wi-Fi or anything else yet, so it was just what was on the TV.” Since I don’t have access to Wi-Fi or anything else just yet, I had to rely on what was playing on the television. A cousin who was visiting the area helped Velasco improve his skills, which turned out to be a fortuitous turn of events. “I have a very clear recollection of my Great Uncle Augustine being able to play three chords on the guitar: A, and the key of E minor. I fell asleep while he was playing it.

After playing those three chords, Velasco continued to push himself by bringing his guitar with him wherever he went, even when he rode in the automobile that belonged to his mother. He saw this as a way to improve his musical ability. When Velasco was a junior and a senior in high school, he spent his days working at a McDonald’s restaurant close to his house and his evenings devoting a significant amount of time to doing deep dives on SoundCloud.

Velasco recalls a time when his creativity was at an all-time high, and it was around this time that he became familiar with bands such as The Internet, Daniel Caesar, and Smino. “I found all of this information, and then I was like, ‘Damn, I was very fire at guitar when I was younger; I should just go buy another one,’ so I went to a pawn shop and bought a small $50 joint,” he said. “I was extremely fired at guitar when I was younger.” Because he was able to take control of the register and dismantle crates in the back of the restaurant, he was able to put away enough money to buy a laptop that he would use to make beats. He used the money he saved to buy a laptop.

After acquiring some experience with composing music on Logic Pro, Velasco decided to educate himself on how to sing in order to further his career prospects. He would show his pupils excerpts from several reference recordings while they were in the history lesson. The very first song that was ever uploaded to the internet by Omar Apollo was performed over a “Chance The Rapper like the rhythm” that the artist had previously obtained from YouTube. This is music, he tells us, that we will never have the opportunity to hear.

As the episode of Apollo’s Tiny Desk draws to a close, he gives the audience a self-improvement homework assignment, encouraging them to put the bad behind them and make themselves open to join in the process of community building: He will then remark, “I want all of you to think about something.” “I want you to go home, I want you to meditate, and I want you to simply burn the bridge,” the voice in my head said. “I want you to do all of those things.” He has a chuckle. “I’m playing!” In Omar Apollo’s universe, however, there is no space for tearing each other down since there is only room for uplifting one another, as seen by the band’s and his own infectiously positive spirit.

What a fantastic way to kick off the second installment of our annual El Tiny series! Omar Apollo starts off Latinx Heritage Month with a full-band version of “En El Olvido,” backed by Las Mariachis Lindas. In his interpretation of the Mexican corrido, he channels a childhood spent listening to Juan Gabriel into his performance. Apollo welcomes this melancholy as the band glides into the smooth R&B tune “Evergreen.” According to the ageless knowledge of Alt. Latino co-host Anamaria Sayre, a Mexican party is not complete until someone begins sobbing. He smiles as he addresses the gathering and tells them.
