Patrick John Morrison is an American actor, better known as Patrick Wayne. He starred in more than 40 movies. He’s the second son of John Wayne, the famous Hollywood star. Patrick could be said to have always been meant for grandeur. The veteran actor has been on the list of great actors who have adorned the silver screen for himself with a career spanning nearly five decades.

Though he was neither as remarkably beautiful as his father, nor as lovely as he had, Patrick had a rough look, and an undeniable person about him who was hard to miss in the second half of the 20th century and won many hearts. Some people assume that he could not fully come out of the shadow of his father. Although partly true, Patrick had his own stardom brand, which stood the test of time remarkably.

Patrick Wayne was born in Los Angeles, California on 15 July 1939 to John Wayne and Josephine Alicia Saenz. He was the second of the couple’s four children. When he was born he was named Patrick John Morrison, but later he took the last name of his father and came to be known as Patrick Wayne.

After going to a local high school, Patrick went to Loyola College and finished his studies in 1961 after having done the same thing for his elder brother. At the age of 11, Patrick first appeared on the screen. His first roles were in films directed by the close friend of his father, John Ford, who was also his godfather. His debut was in the year 1950 in a film called ‘The Rio Grande.’ Followed by five films, John Ford – The Quiet Man (1950), The Sun Shines Bright (1953), ‘Mister Roberts’ (1955), ‘The Long Gray Line’ (1955), and ‘The Searcher’ (1956). In two of those films- ‘The Quiet Man’ and ‘Rio Grande’ his father was a co-star.

He was also a classic member, ‘The Searchers,’ led by John Ford again. The film came out in 1956 and immediately achieved cultic status. John Wayne, Vera Miles, and Ward Bond were also stars.

Patrick went to Loyola Marymount, where he became Dennis Hopper’s friend. Patrick took the lead in a movie called ‘The Young Land’ with him. The film was released in 1959. It was well-received in the industry and effectively marked his emergence from the shadow of his father.

He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard after his graduation in 1961. During that period he did several films, mostly in John Ford’s films, ‘The Alamo’ (1960), ‘The Comancheros’ (1966), ‘Donovan’s Reef’ (1963), and ‘McLintock’ (1963). His roles cannot be classified as caméos in the last two because they were larger and more important. ‘McLintock’ was made as to the 1968 film, ‘The Green Berets,’ by his elder brother Michael Wayne, in which Patrick played important roles. Both of these films were directed by John Wayne, their father.

During this period Patrick was involved in “Cheyenne Autumn” (1964), “Shenandoah” (1965), and “An Eye for an Eye” Other films (1966). In ‘Shenandoah,’ Patrick shared a screen with his dad James Stewart. He appeared the following year in a TV comedy series called ‘The Rounders.’ Ron Haye and Chill Wills also played key roles.

‘Big Jake’ was released in 1971, which was to become Patrick’s final film with his father. The film was made by Michael Wayne and also starred in conjunction with Robert Mitchum’s son, Christopher Mitchum, Ethan Wayne, John’s youngest son. In all, Patrick appeared alongside his father in 11 films.

In the mid and late 1970s, Patrick’s career peaked when he played some very interesting roles in hit films. In 1977, he was eponymous in ‘Sinbad and the Tiger’s Eye.’ Wayne overpowered monsters and saved his lady’s love in the popular fantasy theatre. At the time, he became so popular in science fiction films that the same year he was cast into another high-profile science fiction film, The People That Time Forgot. During this period, certain special effects were just beginning to peak, and this film saw Patrick fighting even stranger creatures that had special effects.

Wayne’s career was mainly focused on television series and game shows after ‘The People That Time Forgot.’ In ‘Shirley’ (1979) he was cast as a love interest opposite Shirley Jones. The following year he hosted ‘The Monte Carlo Show,’ a truth showing talents from all over the world. Patrick’s other series included ‘Fantasy Island’ (1978), ‘Murder, She Wrote’ (1984), ‘Charlie’s Angels (1976), and ‘Sledge Hammer’ (1986). Interestingly, he was offered the role of a ‘Superman’ who, due to his father’s ill health, he had to decline. He also participated in the revival of the ‘Tic-Tac-Dough’ game show. Before the air was removed, he hosted 13 episodes of the series.

During this period, he also appeared in several films, especially ‘Rustler’s Rhapsody’ in 1985 and ‘Young Guns’ in 1988. His last appearance in a film was in ‘Deep Cover’ in 1997.He has featured in seven documentaries such as ‘Hollywood Greats,’ ‘American Masters’ and ‘The Quiet Man: The Joy of Ireland,’ beside films and television.

In his life, Patrick married twice. He was supposed to marry first with his fiancée Peggy Hunt in the autumn of 1964, but the wedding was canceled at the last hour. A year later, on 11 December 1965, they married in Hollywood. Before their divorce in 1978, the couple had three kids – two sons and a daughter.

He married Misha Anderson, who’s about thirty years younger than him, as a surprise to his second marriage. They met at the Sherwood Country Club for a wedding. In May 1999, he married her and since then they have been together.

In the early 1980s, Patrick found the John Wayne Cancer Institute, together with his siblings, after losing their father from the same disease several years ago. He was appointed President of the Institute in 2003.

This tall, strapping, exceedingly beautiful, second son of John Wayne, possessing his dad’s durable good looks, vigor, and charm, had huge boots to fill in trying to escape the fame of his legendary dad in the Hollywood corral on his own terms. But try, and looking back he may not have achieved his father’s uncomfortable stardom, but he certainly made more than 40 films in his career, nine with his dad.

One of four children, born to John Wayne and his first wife, Josephine Alicia Saenz, was named by Patrick John Wayne, so a similar destiny seems natural. His early film, at the age of 11 years, was made by Pater Patrick in his father’s classic western Rio Grande (1950).

His apprentices were The Quiet Man (1952). The Sun Shines Bright (1953); the Long Gray Line (1955); Mister Roberts (1955); and The Searchers (1956). However, the family friend and iconic director John Ford led all the above-mentioned films. He attended Loyola University after high school and graduated in 1961.

During this time he went to the star in his own film, The Young Land’s second string oater (1959). When he realized he was not ready for his own movie, he returned to the folding family and gained more confidence in his camera in the 1960s, supporting his dad in The Alamo (1960), Donovan’s Reef (1963), McLintock! (1963), and The Green Berets (1968).

After his father’s Big Jake (1971), Patrick broke away again and sought his own success. Interestingly enough, he won more recognition in the sci-fi genre from dusty boots and the saddle scene. His career peaked at the turn of the 1970s when he became the titular hero, Ray Harryhausen’s brave monsters, and saved the fantastic daughter of Tyrone Power, Taryn, in the popular fantasy of the morning, in Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977).

Patrick was a smoother, more gentlemanly Wayne version with a totally captivating smile and accessible personality. He co-started Shirley Jones’ romantic love in another Shirley (1979) short TV series and occasionally forsook acting tasks to show games and series. Although his talent’s extent has rarely been tested over the years, he was a very pleasant participant in the 1970s and 1980s’ most popular TV shows including ‘F.B.I.’, ‘Marcus Welby,’ ‘Police Woman,’ ‘Grizzly Adams,’ ‘Charlie’s Angels,’ ‘Fantasy Island,’ ‘Matt Houston,’ ‘Fantasy Island’ and ‘Murder.

His last appearances were with “Kung Fu: The Legend Continues” and “Silk Stalkings,” with his movies Young Guns (1988) (as Pat Garrett), the comedy crime Her Alibi (1989), and the action adventures Chill Factor (1989) and Deep Cover, just before the Millennium (1997). Patrick Wayne became the President of John Wayne Cancer Institute after the death of his elder brother Michael in 2003.
