Colin Firth, in full Colin Andrew Firth (born 10 September 1960), a British actor especially known for his aloof character portrayals, who gradually abandoned their reserve to become emotionally available, in particular in the TV adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (1995) and future King George VI in The King’s Speech (2010).

He played at school and was accepted to the Drama Center London in 1980. (now part of the University of Arts London and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design). Three years later he made his debut in the West End portraying in Another Country a character based on British spy Guy Burgess. Firth played the movie adaptation in 1984, although he played a different role.

In the next decade, Firth worked steadily, appearing in numerous productions, films, and television. In 1988, he was critically congratulated for the TV film Tumbledown in which he portrays a Scottish soldier who was wounded in the war on the Falkland Islands and is struggling to recover. Firth won his first nomination for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). Apartment Zero (1988), Valmont (1989), and Circle of Friends have been the most important feature films from this period (1995).

Despite his numerous credits, Firth was not greatly disrupted until he appeared in the television miniseries Pride and Prejudice as Fitzwilliam Darcy (1995). Firth earned devoted support for his representation of a repressed aristocratic whose haughtiness concealed his growing affection for Elizabeth Bennet. There followed a series of renowned films, including The English Patient (1996) and Shakespeare in Love (1998), which both won the Academy Award for Best Photography.

Firth received further attention in 2001 in Bridget Jones’s Diary as Mark Darcy, a romantic comedy adapting Helen Fielding’s bestselling novel.
