Jagadguru Ramanandacharya Swami Rambhadracharya (born Pandit Giridhar on 14 January 1950) is an Indian Hindu spiritual leader, educator, Sanskrit scholar, polyglot, poet, author, textual commentator, philosopher, composer, singer, dramatist, Katha artist residing in Chitrakoot, India. He has been one of the four people holding the title of Jagadguru Ramanandacharya since 1988, making him one of the incumbents.
Tulsi Peeth is a religious and social service organization in Chitrakoot named after Saint Tulsidas. Rambhadracharya is the institution’s founder and now serves as its head. He founded the Jagadguru Rambhadracharya Handicapped University in Chitrakoot and its chancellor for life. This university caters to four distinct categories of challenged students and provides graduate and postgraduate level education to them alone. Since he was only two months old, Rambhadracharya has been blind. He did not begin his official schooling until he was seventeen years old, and he has never composed anything using Braille or any other type of assistance.

He is widely considered one of the foremost experts on Tulsidas in India and the editor of a critically acclaimed version of the Ramcharitmanas. He is an artist who has contributed to the Katha versions of the Ramayana and the Bhagavata. His Katha programs are presented regularly in various places in India and other countries, and they are broadcast on multiple television networks, including Shubh TV, Sanskar TV, and Sanatan TV. In addition to that, he is the head of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP).
Giridhar was just two months old when he started having vision problems. On March 24, 1950, trachoma was diagnosed as the cause of his eye infection. Since no modern medical facilities were available in the hamlet, he was sent to an old lady in a neighboring town who was known to treat boils caused by trachoma to get some relief. Giridhar’s eyes began bleeding after the lady put a myrobalan paste on them to burst the lumps causing his vision problems. As a consequence, Giridhar lost his eyesight.
His family transported him to the King George Hospital in Lucknow, where he received treatment for his eyes for 21 days; nevertheless, it was impossible to recover his sight. It was attempted to contact a variety of Ayurveda, Homeopathic, Allopathic, and other practitioners in Sitapur, Lucknow, and Bombay; however, these efforts were fruitless. Since then, Rambhadracharya has been unable to see correctly. In June of 1953, when the children watched a juggler do a monkey dance in hamlet, the youngsters, including Giridhar, suddenly fled when the monkey started touching them. Giridhar was imprisoned for a long time in a little dry well after he fell into the well and was only rescued by a young girl. Giridhar’s grandpa urged him to say the poem constantly, and ever since then, Giridhar has made it a habit to recite it whenever he consumes anything, including water and food.
While Giridhar’s father was employed in Bombay then, his maternal grandfather was responsible for Giridhar’s early schooling. His grandpa spent the afternoons telling him stories from the Hindu epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata and devotional works such as Vishramsagar, Sukhsagar, Premsagar, and Brajvilas. Giridhar created his first work of poetry when he was just three years old. He wrote it in Awadhi, a Hindi dialect, and performed it to his grandpa. Giridhar’s Upanayana, known as the holy thread ritual, occurred on Nirjala Ekadashi on June 24, 1961. This particular Ekadashi fell during the brilliant half of the lunar month of Jyeshtha. On this day, in addition to receiving the Gayatri Mantra, he was also initiated into the mantra of Rama by Pandit Ishvardas Maharaj of Ayodhya. Diksha is the Sanskrit word for initiation. Giridhar began going to the Katha programs in his hamlet once every three years in the intercalary month of Purushottama after learning the Bhagavad Gita and the Ramcharitmanas at a very early age.
The third time he went, he presented on Ramcharitmanas, a Katha, and several well-known practitioners of the Katha art form highly praised it. When Giridhar was eleven years old, he was prevented from joining the wedding procession that his family was attending. His family believed that his attendance at the wedding would be a sign that the couple should not be married. Although Giridhar did not begin his official education until he was seventeen, he had already mastered much literature by listening to it as a youngster.
Giridhar’s family hoped he would become a Kathavachak (an artist who performs Katha), but he was more interested in continuing his education. His father investigated the educational opportunities in Varanasi and considered enrolling him in a school designed specifically for visually impaired pupils. Giridhar’s mother was apprehensive about sending him there since, according to her, the institution had a poor reputation for handling blind students. Giridhar enrolled in the Sanskrit Vyakarana (grammar) program at the Adarsh Gaurishankar Sanskrit College on July 7, 1967. While there, he also studied Hindi, English, mathematics, history, and geography. The college was located in the adjacent Jaunpur hamlet of Sujanganj.
This is the day he recounts in his book as the beginning of his “Golden Journey,” which is the name he gave to the most successful period of his life. Since Giridhar can retain information after hearing it just once, he has never needed to utilize study aids such as Braille. By a quarter of a year, he had committed all of Varadaraja’s Laghusiddhantakaumud to memory and achieved mastery over it. He was the best student in his class for four years, and he earned a first-class and distinguished passing grade in the Sanskrit test at the Uttara Madhyama (upper secondary) level.
In 1971, Giridhar pursued further education in Vyakarana by enrolling in the Vyakarana program at the Sampurnanand Sanskrit University in Varanasi. After earning the highest score possible on the capstone test for the Bachelor of Arts (Shastri) degree in 1974, he subsequently enrolled in the Master of Arts (Acharya) program to further his education. During the time that he was working towards his master’s degree, he traveled to New Delhi to take part in many national competitions that were held during the All-India Sanskrit Conference. He won five of the eight gold medals in Vyakarana, Samkhya, Nyaya, Vedanta, and Sanskrit Antakshari.
Giridhar was honored with the awarding of five gold medals and the Chalvaijayanti trophy for Uttar Pradesh by Indira Gandhi, who served as Prime Minister of India then. Giridhar responded to Gandhi’s promise to send him to the United States for treatment of his eyes by reciting an impromptu Sanskrit rhyme. In 1976, Giridhar achieved first place in the final Acharya exams in Vyakarana. He was awarded seven gold medals, and the gold medal was awarded to the Chancellor. As a unique feat, although he had just registered for a master’s degree in Vyakarana, he has proclaimed Acharya of all courses taught at the institution on 30 April 1976.
In 1987 Rambhadradas built a religious and social service organization named Tulsi Peeth (The seat of Tulsi) in Chitrakoot, where, according to the Ramayana, Rama had spent twelve out of his fourteen years of exile. As the originator of the seat, the title of Śrīcitrakūṭatulasīpīṭhādhīśvara (literally, the Lord of the Tulsi Peeth at Chitrakoot) was conferred upon him by Sadhus and intellectuals. Kanch Mandir is the name given to the temple he oversaw construction in the Tulsi Peeth region. This temple is dedicated to Rama and his wife Patni Sita (“glass temple”).
