Walter Ray Allen Jr. (born July 20, 1975) is a retired professional basketball player from the United States. He was a member of the NBA for 18 seasons and was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in September 2018.
Allen was a three-year member of the Connecticut Huskies’ basketball team, where he earned a reputation as a capable long-range shooter. In 1996, he was selected fifth overall in the NBA draught. He became a prolific scorer with the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA, playing alongside Glenn Robinson and Sam Cassell as the team reached the playoffs. The trio, however, failed to win a title, and Allen was transferred to the Seattle SuperSonics. Allen’s reputation as a scorer was cemented in Seattle, where he would set multiple league marks for three-point and free throw shooting. Despite this, Allen was moved to the Boston Celtics in 2007 after failing to win a championship.
In Boston, Allen created a “Big Three” with new colleagues Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, and they were immediately successful, winning the NBA title in 2008. He spent five seasons with the team before leaving in free agency to join the Miami Heat for two seasons. Allen took a reserve position in Miami, focusing on spot-up and clutch shooting, allowing him to win another championship in 2013. His game-tying three-pointer with 5.2 seconds left in Game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals is considered one of the most memorable plays in NBA history.
Allen was the third of five children born to Walter Sr. and Flora Allen at Castle Air Force Base near Merced, California. He grew raised in Saxmundham, Suffolk, England, Altus, Oklahoma, Edwards Air Force Base in California, and Germany as a military child. After years of travelling and moving, his family arrived in Dalzell, South Carolina, where he would attend high school for the next four years. Due to the accent he developed throughout his formative years in Britain, the young Allen was frequently made the odd man out and picked on by children when he initially arrived. Allen’s inherent physical skills and obsession with hard effort helped him to thrive in every sport he played, while never quite fitting in with the other youngsters. When he realised he had a natural advantage in basketball due to a growth spurt, he resolved to devote his leisure time to becoming the best basketball player he could be.
Allen practised for hours every day, as long as it didn’t interfere with his academics, because he wanted to be the best player on the military installation where he lived. He was playing for Hillcrest High School’s varsity squad by the age of fifteen, and he would eventually lead them to their first state championship game. In that game, Allen demonstrated his NBA potential by scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in a rout of the Hillcrest Wildcats. Allen eventually chose an offer from the University of Connecticut, despite the increased interest from institutions, particularly the University of Kentucky.
Following the 1998–99 NBA lockout, Allen signed a six-year, $70.9 million agreement with the Bucks on February 10, 1999, making him the franchise’s highest-paid player at the time. Allen made his first playoff appearance in the 1998–99 season, with the Bucks securing the seventh seed. Despite Allen’s 22.3 points per game, they were swept by the Indiana Pacers in the first round. The next season, in a loss to the Seattle SuperSonics on January 20, 2000, Allen set a career high with 13 assists. Allen scored 36 points and collected 8 rebounds in a 102-99 win over the Utah Jazz on February 3, 2000. Allen made his first All-Star Game appearance a month later, scoring 14 points in 17 minutes. Allen led the Bucks in scoring throughout the regular and postseason seasons of 1999–2000.
Allen had a lot of individual milestones during his time with the Seattle SuperSonics. Allen became the 97th player in NBA history to record 15,000 points on March 12, 2006. On April 7, 2006, Allen passed Reggie Miller for second place on the NBA’s all-time 3-point field goal made list. In a game against the Denver Nuggets on April 19, 2006, Allen shattered Dennis Scott’s ten-year-old NBA record for 3-point field goals made in a season. Stephen Curry has since shattered the record.
Allen would play all 48 minutes on June 12, 2008, and contribute heavily with 19 points and 9 rebounds in the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history, with the Celtics coming back from a 24-point hole in the second quarter and a 20-point deficit in the third. Allen would make the game-winning layup with 16.4 seconds left in that game, giving the Celtics a 5-point advantage and putting the game out of reach.
