Richard Dormer (November 11, 1969) is a Northern Ireland-born actor, playwright, and screenwriter. He is most recognised for his roles in HBO’s Game of Thrones and Sky Atlantic’s Fortitude as Beric Dondarrion and Dan Anderssen.
Dormer rose to prominence after his role as Northern Irish snooker champion Alex Higgins in the 2003 film Hurricane, which he also wrote and directed. Dormer was named outstanding actor at The Stage in 2003. Dormer won the Irish Times Best Actor Award for his performance in Frank McGuinness’s Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme in 2004. He was cast as the lead in the 2012 film Good Vibrations, which follows the storey of Northern Ireland figure and punk rock visionary Terri Hooley, following a string of secondary roles in films. The film premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, winning Best Film, Best Screenplay, and Outstanding Debut at the 2014 British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards. Critics praised the picture, with the majority praising Dormer’s performance. Dormer was nominated for Best Actor at the Irish Film and Television Awards for his depiction of Terri Hooley. Dormer also appeared in Season 7 (episode 1) of HBO’s Game of Thrones as Lord Beric Dondarrion, aka the “Lightning Lord,” the head of the “Brotherhood Without Banners.” Dormer reprised his role as Dondarrion in the sixth season of the show in 2016, and then returned for the seventh season in 2017 and the eighth and final season in 2019.
Dormer started shooting Fortitude for Sky Atlantic in 2014. He plays Sheriff Dan Anderssen alongside Stanley Tucci, Michael Gambon, Christopher Eccleston, and Sofie Grbl from The Killing in what has been described as “their most ambitious undertaking to date.” On January 29, 2015, Fortitude aired. Fortitude, a fictional Arctic Norwegian village, serves as the setting for the series. The show was recommissioned by Sky Atlantic for a second series of ten episodes on April 9, 2015.
