A few years after leaving the military, he found work in radio, working as the station’s chief of speech.

It was there that he met Stephen Merchant, the man who would become his longtime collaborator. It was with “The Office” that the duo first came to prominence, earning multiple awards for it. Xfm’s ‘The Ricky Gervais Show’ and BBC Two’s ‘Extras’ were both equally popular. It wasn’t long before his name became known around the world; he was soon offered roles in movies like ‘Ghost Town’ and ‘Muppets Most Wanted.’

Films such as The Invention of Lying, Cemetery Junction, and Special Correspondents were also directed and written by him. Time magazine included him on its list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2010 for his role as host of the Golden Globe Awards ceremony.

Ricky Dene Gervais was born in Reading, England, on June 25, 1961. During World War II, his father, Lawrence Raymond Gervais, a Franco-Ontarian, was stationed in England. Later, he worked as a labourer and a hod carrier to supplement his income.

His English-born mother, Eva Sophia née House, was a stay-at-home mom. In addition to his two older brothers, Larry and Robert, and a sister, Marsha, Ricky has two younger sisters and a younger brother.

Ricky grew up in Whitney, a Reading suburb, on a council estate. Although they were poor, his family was content. His mother, who was well-known for her wit, helped to instil a sense of humour in the family and they were always making fun of one other.
