Rocco Benito Commisso (born November 25, 1949) is an Italian-American businessman who is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Mediacom, the fifth largest cable television company in the United States. Commisso owns the company privately as of 2011. Cablevision, the Royal Bank of Canada, and Chase Manhattan Bank were among his prior employers. Commisso has been the owner and chairman of the New York Cosmos since 2017, and the owner of ACF Fiorentina in Italy since June 2019.
Pfizer Inc. was where Commisso began his business career. He spent ten years in the financial industry after returning to Columbia and graduating from business school, originally at Chase Manhattan Bank. As part of Chase’s corporate financing department, he began working with cable providers and other entertainment businesses in 1978. Later, he worked for Royal Bank of Canada, where he was in charge of the bank’s media and communications financing business in the United States. He served as Cablevision Industries Corporation’s Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Director from 1986 until 1995. Cablevision Industries rose from 25th to 8th largest cable provider in the United States during this time, with 1.3 million customers at the time of its merger with Time Warner.
Since founding Mediacom Communications Corporation in his basement in 1995, Commisso has served as chairman and CEO. Mediacom began by purchasing cable systems in underserved small American towns. Mediacom was taken public by Commisso in 2000, and it has since grown to become the eighth largest cable operator in the United States, with annual revenues of more than $1.6 billion. The company was taken private in March 2011 and is now entirely owned by Commisso. Since then, CableFAX magazine has rated Mediacom the greatest cable company in the United States in 2016 and 2009.
Commisso was a member of the Columbia University Lions soccer team from 1967 to 1970. He has been named to the All-Ivy League team three times. Commisso was a member of a freshman team that went unbeaten with an 8-0 record in 1967. Commisso was a co-captain of Columbia’s 9-4-0 1970 team, which qualified for the NCAA men’s soccer tournament for the first time. Commisso was recognised for his skill and leadership during his collegiate soccer career, earning him an invitation to test out for the US squad for the 1972 Summer Olympics.
Commisso was named one of Columbia’s 250 outstanding undergraduate alumni of all time in 2004, when the school’s newspaper, the Columbia Spectator, commemorated the school’s 250th anniversary.
He was also named a Select Distinguished Alumni by the school of business. Commisso has received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the Southwest Connecticut/New York Hudson Valley region, as well as the Cablevision magazine Innovator Award for Business Strategy and the National Italian American Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. He was named to the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame in 2007. He was the Co-Chair of the Cable Show in New Orleans in 2008. He was selected Business Person of the Year and inducted into the SUNY New Paltz School of Business Hall of Fame in 2010. Commisso was honoured into the Cable Center Hall of Fame in June 2011. He received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2015. The National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame inducted Commisso in 2018.
