Rodney Eugene Monroe is a retired professional basketball player from the United States. He is most known for his time spent playing for the National Basketball Association (NBA), although he also competed in other leagues. During the 1991 NBA draft, the Atlanta Hawks picked him as the thirty-first overall choice in the second round. Monroe, a shooting guard who stood 6’3″ (1.90 m) tall, spent just one season in the NBA. He did so with the Hawks during the 1991–92 season, during which he participated in 38 games and scored 131 points.

In addition to playing professionally in the United States, Australia, Greece, Israel, Spain, and Italy (for Carne Montana Forli from 1998 to 1999), Fabriano Basket, also known as Banca Marche Fabriano from 1999 to 2002, and Euro Roseto from 2002 to 2003), and the Philippines are all countries in which Monroe has played professionally. At the moment, Monroe is serving as both the director of basketball operations and the men’s basketball coach at South Lake Christian Academy in Huntersville, located in North Carolina.

After finishing his undergraduate career at North Carolina State, where he averaged 27.0 points per game, Monroe was named the Player of the Year for the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1991. At NC State, he surpassed David Thompson’s record for most points scored in a career, and he now sits in fourth place on the all-time scoring list for the ACC with 2,551 points. In 2002, Monroe was recognized as one of the fifty best men’s basketball players in Atlantic Coast Conference history and was selected to participate on the ACC 50th Anniversary men’s basketball team.

St. Maria Goretti High School, located in Hagerstown, Maryland, was Monroe’s high school, where he participated in the highly competitive Baltimore Catholic League. When Rodney Monroe became the first Black person to ever be chief of police chief the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in 2008, he created history in Charlotte. After having the role of police chief in Macon, Georgia, and Richmond, Virginia, Monroe was selected for the job.

Monroe stepped down from the role in 2015, having served for seven years. After having defended and operated for close to 40 years, Monroe eventually retired. While serving as chief of the CMPD, he oversaw the department, our chief period, in which crime decreased significantly, including the fewest murders ever recorded. He achieved it partly because Thompson could not participate in games as a freshman, which meant he had an extra year to play.

During his stay in Raleigh, NC State suffered through the terrible end of the Valvano era, and they concluded the season under Les Robinson. This was another factor in his decision to leave Raleigh. Robinson was a wonderful guy, but the impact of the Valvano scandal made many things more difficult for him. In particular, he had to contend with some significant recruiting constraints set by the school. Monroe was forced to take many shots as a senior, contributing to his high-scoring average of 27 points per game.

Rodney Monroe was the first African-American to lead the Charlotte Police Department and arrived in Charlotte in June 2008. Nearly four decades ago, he began his career as a police officer in Washington, District of Columbia, where he eventually progressed through the ranks to numerous leadership roles. After that, he became the head of the police departments in Macon, Georgia, and Richmond, Virginia, before settling in Charlotte.

Monroe eliminated numerous specialized administrative units within two months as chief and moved the officers working in such areas to patrol duty. At tChiefme, he said that his first objective was to increase the number of officers out on patrol. During the Democratic National Convention in 2012, former WFAE reporter Julie Rose took photos illustrating his hands-on approach. Monroe could be seen out in the streets watching the demonstrations.

Your subscription to Slate Plus made it possible for Leon Neyfakh to write a story on the death of Jonathan Ferrell and the events that followed. Neyfakh has an exclusive conversation with former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe, who was the one who decided to press charges against Officer Randall Kerrick. This conversation is only available to Slate Plus subscribers.

Five years before Jonathan Ferrell was killed in Bradfield Farms, Rodney Monroe was promoted to chief of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in North Carolina. On his watcChiefe homicide rate had dropped to its lowest level in 30 years, and trust in the department among minority residents was unusually high. Approximately a dozen conversations confirmed this impression I had with residents of Charlotte during my trip there in August. By then, he had built a reputation in Charlotte’s black community as an honest and transparent reformer. On his watch, the homicide rate had dropped to its lowest level in 30 years.

Monroe said that he has a lot of love and respect for the city, even though it is difficult for him to walk away. First and foremost among the several factors that led to Monroe’s selection by the City of Charlotte was his tremendous enthusiasm for law enforcement. Monroe is credited for bringing Richmond’s crime rate to its lowest level in the last 26 years, as Richmond has seen personally.

The city’s mayor, Doug Wilder, issued a statement in which he said, “The Chief informed me late this afternoon that the City of Charlotte had extended an offer to him to become its next police chief and that he had accepted that offer.” The Chief notified the mayor late in the afternoon. According to the mayor, he will have more remarks on Friday. Chiefmost recent recruits are being subjected to an intensive 24-hour training session on racial relations. Chief Rodney Monroe is the one who came up with the idea, and the work that is done in the classroom is split up into two distinct parts.

When Rodney Monroe was appointed Chief of Police for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in 2008, one of the first things he did was inquire about who among the department’s officers was known for giving the most fantastic haircuts. Gene Winchester, the proprietor of Fourth Ward Barber & Styling Millenium on Graham Street, was the one who introduced him to the suspect, and the rest, as they say, is history. Winchester helped develop Cops and Barbers, a town hall event that intended to foster ties between police and Charlotte’s black population, after spending years engaging in conversations with Monroe that were both personal and political.

The first gathering was held on February 1 and continued every month on the very first Sunday. The meeting in June was co-hosted by the then-Deputy Chief Kerr Putney, who later succeeded Monroe when Monroe retired on July 1 and took the reins of most of the conversation. Winchester expressed his desire to continue developing the program in collaboration with Putney. Chris Corchiani and Rodney Monroe, known by their nicknames “Fire and Ice,” were two of the most entertaining players Jim Valvano coached at NC State.

Of course, the fire was represented by Corchiani, a fiery point guard, while Monroe, an exquisite and unflappable scorer, portrayed the ice. In addition to that, their backcourt was one of the best in the league. Corchiani did not possess much natural skill, but he had extraordinary brains. It is possible to compare him and Jose Alvarado, who plays at Georgia Tech; nonetheless, Alvarado has slightly more skill.

However, both of these gentlemen had a fundamental ability: they were excellent leaders who inspired their peers to perform at a greater level. There was one trick in particular that Corchiani pulled that was very amusing. He would charge up the court, get in front of his defender, then halt and crouch down; at this point, his defender would charge full force into him, resulting in a foul.

The Tribunes were on fire in the first few minutes of the game against Vincennes. At the half, MCC’s advantage was 47-28, and Sierra Green had a perfect shooting performance from beyond the arc, making all five of her three-point attempts. In the first twenty minutes of the game, Torrie Cash contributed with three three-pointers, while Rodney added two of her own. During the second half, Vincennes staged a comeback and scored 32 points alone in the fourth quarter.
