Roger Timothy Craig (born July 10, 1960) is a former American football running back who played in the National Football League (NFL). He was a member of the Minnesota Vikings, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Los Angeles Raiders. Craig represented the 49ers in four Pro Bowls and three Super Bowls. Craig was the first player in NFL history to carry and catch 1,000 yards in the same season. The only other players who have done so are Marshall Faulk and Christian McCaffrey. He is currently employed by TIBCO Software as the Vice President of Business Development.
Craig graduated from Central High School in Davenport, Iowa in 1979. He was paired with future NFL tight end Jamie Williams there. Curtis Craig, his older brother, was also a running back who graduated from Central in 1974. Jim Jensen, the future Denver Broncos running back, came before the Craig brothers at Central. Coach Jim Fox’s 1976 team, which included Roger Craig and Williams, won the Iowa State Championship. Craig rushed for 1,565 yards and 27 touchdowns as a senior in 1978, garnering prep All-America honours. Craig carried for 353 yards and four touchdowns in his final high school game, a playoff loss. Craig was a multi-sport athlete who excelled in wrestling and track. He qualified for the Iowa State Championships in wrestling. Craig finished second in both the 110 hurdles and the 400 hurdles in the Iowa State Track and Field Championships as a Senior in 1979. Craig set a new school record in the 110 hurdles, breaking Jim Jensen’s previous mark. Coach Ira Dunsworth, a 10-time State Champion, is credited with helping Craig create his characteristic high knee running technique. Craig’s timing of 14.43 in the 110 hurdles is remains among the Iowa State Track and Field Championships’ All-Time Bests.
Craig graduated from Davenport Central, then went to Nebraska to play for Coach Tom Osborne, following in the footsteps of Curtis Craig and Jamie Williams. Curtis Craig was an All-Big 8 Player in 1977, and Williams went on to play in the NFL.
Roger Craig was a three-year starter for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He carried for 2,446 yards and 26 touchdowns in his Nebraska career, averaging 6 yards per carry. In Osborne’s I-formation option offence, he was a key running back.
Craig rushed for 769 yards (7.1) and 15 touchdowns as a Sophomore in 1980, after primarily playing for the Freshman squad in 1979. Craig rushed for 1,060 yards and six touchdowns as a junior in 1981. Craig was also nominated to the All-Big 8 Team after finishing fourth on the team with 12 receptions for 87 yards. Craig, who played in the backfield with Mike Rozier in 1982, was hurt early in the season and missed time, but he returned with 127 yards rushing in the regular-season finale.
