On November 11, 1968, Roland Sebastian Martin entered the world in Houston, Texas’s Third Ward, the city’s historically black neighborhood. Grandfather Roland Sebastian Martin, Sr., was the inspiration for grandson Roland Sebastian Martin’s name. Growing up, Roland looked up to his parents more than anyone else. His grandfather loved to read and always tuned in to the evening news. At the age of 14, Roland knew that he wanted to pursue a career in the field of communications. Roland began working at the Austin American-Statesman after earning his Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Texas A&M University in 1991. Roland spent some time as an employee of the Austin American-Statesman before deciding to become a city hall reporter for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Back in 1995, he got his start in the media industry when he was hired by KRLD radio as a sports reporter, initially filling the role of morning driving reporter. He had worked for the Chicago Defender, the oldest Black newspaper in the United States, where he held the positions of executive editor and general manager. Martin was an early adopter of digital media technology. He created the first-ever audio and video podcasts from a Black news organization while working at the Defender in 2005 and 2006. He was the founding editor of both BlackAmericaWeb.com and Savoy Magazine, both of which were published by Vanguard Media and headquartered in New York.
