An American professional baseball team from San Francisco, the San Francisco Giants. With eight World Series championships and 23 National League (NL) titles, the Giants are baseball’s most successful franchise.

In 1883, the Gothams team was created in New York City, which would later become known as the Giants. Following an extra-innings triumph in 1885, a pleased manager described the club as “the Giants,” and the team’s name was altered to reflect this. Against the American Association champions in 1888, the Giants took home their first pennant and played in an early and unofficial World Series.

They then repeated as National League champions in 1889. The victory over the American Association’s Brooklyn Bridegrooms (later the Dodgers, presently the Los Angeles Dodgers) in the 1889 “World Series” was significant because it initiated a long-standing rivalry between the Giants and the Dodgers, who joined the NL in 1890.

When John McGraw was hired as manager in the middle of the 1902 season, he brought the Giants back to prominence in the National League. A year after winning the NL pennant, McGraw’s Giants did not participate in the first official World Series, as he did not want to play the purportedly inferior American League champion. With another pennant in their sights and a World Series appearance arranged, the San Francisco Giants teamed up with future Hall of Famers Christy Mathewson and Joe McGinnity to upset Philadelphia in five games.

Between 1911 and 1917, McGraw led the Giants to four World Series appearances, all of which they lost. Following a World Series triumph in 1921, the Giants repeated the feat in 1922. Toward the conclusion of the 1920s, the New York Giants had acquired three future Hall of Famers: Bill Terry (first base), Mel Ott (outfield), and Carl Hubbell (pitcher).

Terry replaced McGraw as player-manager for the remainder of the 1932 season and as manager until 1941, when he was replaced by McGraw’s successor. New York Yankees won the World Series in Terry’s first full season as a manager of the Giants in 1936 and 1937, respectively.

For most of the 1940s, the Giants were never better than third in the National League standings. Leo Durocher was hired as the team’s manager in 1948 after the Dodgers let him go. In 1951 and 1954, the Giants made it to the World Series, with the Giants capturing the championship in 1954. Bobby Thomson’s dramatic pennant-winning home run (known as the “shot heard ’round the world”) in 1951 and Willie Mays’s famous over-the-shoulder catch in the 1954 World Series were only two of the most memorable moments in baseball history.

It wasn’t long until the Giants relocated to San Francisco in 1958, as attendance at the Polo Grounds, their now-legendary home, dwindled due to the Yankees’ ongoing dominance in New York. Fans flocked to Candlestick Park to see the San Francisco Giants, who had a number of promising young players on their roster. The San Francisco Giants’ lineup included first baseman/outfielder Orlando Cepeda, outfielder Willie McCovey, and pitcher Juan Marichal. It was an impressive roster, but it didn’t lead to much success on the field: the Giants only made it to one World Series (in 1962) in their first 29 years in San Francisco.

San Francisco Giants Biography/Wiki

On-field play in 1989 wasn’t spectacular, but the earthquake that struck the Bay Area immediately before game three of the World Series set a new record for the most earthquakes ever recorded in the United States. The quake and its effects were immediately broadcast to homes across the country since several television stations were broadcasting live from Candlestick Park before the game.

It was in 1993 that Barry Bonds, the son of a legendary San Francisco outfielder, arrived to the Giants and launched a record-breaking attack on baseball’s home run records. He led the San Francisco Giants to the World Series in 2002, where they lost to the Anaheim Angels in a dramatic seven-game series. He won four straight MVP awards (2001–04) while in San Francisco. A decade later, steroid allegations began to cloud Bond’s successes, and the New York Giants did not keep him in 2007 when they were rebuilding their team.

For the first time in a decade, the San Francisco Giants made it to the playoffs in 2010 thanks to a strong pitching staff led by Tim Lincecum. For the first time since moving from New York City to Los Angeles, the San Francisco Giants won a World Series championship. 2012 saw the San Francisco Giants win six elimination games in the playoffs in order to come back from a 2–0 and a 3–1 deficit in the divisional and championship rounds, respectively, to win both titles. Although the Giants won 18 fewer games in 2013 than they did in 2012, San Francisco still managed to finish the year with a losing record.

It was a dramatic turnaround for the Giants in 2014, when they won 88 games to qualify for an NL Wild Card position and went on to win the World Series. Bumgarner threw five scoreless innings out of the bullpen in game seven to seal a seven-game series win over the Kansas City Royals, who had previously beaten them in four games in a best-of-seven series.

As a result of a series of injuries that decimated their team’s chances of making it back to the playoffs, the Giants were unable to compete at their best in 2017. When the San Francisco 49ers won 107 games in 2021, it was the most wins the team has ever had and the most in NBA history. A return to postseason play after a five-year absence ended with the Giants losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
