Ted Cruz, by name of Rafael Edward Cruz (born 22 December 1970, Calgary, Alberta, Canada), a US politician who in 2012 was elected to the US Senate and in 2013 started to serve Texas for his first term. He sought the nomination of the Republican Party for President in 2016.

His father, Rafael Bienvenido Cruz, was born in Cuba but escaped from the Fulgencio Batista rule in the United States in 1957. Ted’s mother, Eleanor Wilson Elizabeth, was a Delaware native. The family lived in Alberta, Canada, when he was born in 1970, where his dad worked in the oil sector. Because he was born in Canada to an American mother, Cruz became a dual American-Canadian citizen. The family moved to Houston, Texas in 1974, when he graduated from the Second Baptist School. Cruz was later at Princeton University (B.A., 1992), where he studied public policy and joined the debate team and won the top prize during his senior year at a national debate competition. He subsequently went to Harvard Law School and finished his studies in 1995.

Subsequently, Cruz was appointed chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court of Appeals (1995) and then William Rehnquist (1996-97). Following his private legal business in 1997, he represented Congressman John Boehner in a lawsuit and worked on the preliminary Republican-led trial of Bill Clinton’s prosecution. In 1999, Cruz became increasingly active in politics of the Republican Party, and he worked on the presidential campaign by George W. Bush to advise the candidate on legal matters and public policy. He worked on Bush’s legal team in the Bush v. Gore Supreme Court, leading to Bush’s presidential election. Cruz worked in the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission.

In 2003, Cruz was named Solicitor General of Texas, becoming the youngest in the United States at the age of 32. He argued nine times before the Supreme Court and was recognised as a ferociously effective litigator. Cruz, a rigorous constructionist, thought that the constitution’s judicial interpretation had to be limited to the literal reading of the language. He successfully contended throughout his five-year stint as a solicitor general that international treaties would not be enforceable on states until the U.S. Congress was inaugurated and advocated for the legitimacy of a public monument to the Ten Commandments. In 2008, Cruz returned to private practise.

In 2012, he entered the US Senate slot vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchison in his first try to win an election bureau. The popular among the Tea Party movement, Cruz, ran to the right of the favoured Republican candidate and gained considerable margin in a runoff. In the general election he handily defeated his Democratic adversary. He became a leader of the Conservative movement in Congress after gaining office in 2013. He has built a reputation as a firebrand that thwarts the leadership of his party as well as the fighting efforts of President Barack Obama and Democratic congressmen. Cruz has emerged as a vocal opponent of the Patient protection and affordable care law and spent more than 21 hours reading Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs & Ham in 2013, in a failed attempt to limit the PPACA Senate budget. The move contributed to the closure of the US government the next month.

In 2014 Cruz renounced his nationality in Canada and the year after declared his entry for the 2016 U.S. presidential election contest. One of his early acts as candidate was to claim he, his wife (Heidi Cruz, managing director of Goldman Sachs who took an unpaid leave during the campaign), and his two children for health insurance under the PPACA.

Cruz kept his conservative agenda on the campaign trail. He favoured the abolition of many organisations, particularly the Department of Education and the Internal Revenue Service, as an outspoken champion of a smaller government. He also advocated that the corporate tax should be ended and a flat tax introduced. He believes that states should be allowed to decide on the question of same-sex marriages and seeks to restrict access to abortions. On social issues. Cruz started the primary election season by winning Iowa Caucuses in February 2016 and was second to Donald Trump on March’s Super Tuesday, when primary and caucus sessions were held in 11 states. When Trump strengthened his leadership over the next two months, Cruz tried to generate momentum by announcement in late April that Carly Fiorina would be its running mate if he became the Republican candidate. However, Cruz suspended his campaign after a bad performance in the Indiana primary in the following week. His friendship with Trump was especially controversial at that time, and Trump claimed unfoundedly that Cruz’s dad had been with Lee Harvey Oswald just before the latter assassinated U.S. President, John F. Kennedy in 1963. But Cruz then embraced Trump, who was eventually elected President.

Cruz subsequently endorsed a number of programmes of President Trump and participated in the elaboration of key fiscal reform legislation in 2017. The following year he sought to reelection, and Democrat Beto O’Rourke faced a surprisingly strong challenge. Trump was campaigning for Cruz, who won the fiercely contested election narrowly. In 2019, the US House of Representatives accused Trump of rejecting money to Ukraine to pressure the country to launch a corruption inquiry into Joe Biden (in 2020 Biden became the Democratic presidential nominee). Cruz fiercely defended Trump and he produced a daily podcast of the proceedings throughout the Senate trial. He voted against convicting Trump in February 2020, and the president was widely acquitted in partisan voting. Cruz wrote One Vote Away later in same year: How a Single Supreme Court Seat can change its history.

Cruz was a staunch backer of Trump in the 2020 presidential race, which ultimately lost to Biden. During the weeks that followed, Cruz promoted Trump’s frequent charges of electoral fraud, although several court filings were not able to prove the allegations. At the certification of the results by Congress in January 2021, he was one of a number of Republicans who voted to reject electors from numerous countries. The procedure was stopped after Trump supporters rushed the Capitol, but the electoral challenge failed.

United States Senate, one of the two houses of the United States Congress, created under the Constitution in 1789. Approximately a third of Senate membership expires every two years and is named “the house that never dies” by the Chamber.

The Founding Fathers conceived the job of the Senate as a test of the popularly elected House of Representatives. Each state is thereby equally represented, irrespective of the size or population. Furthermore, until the 17th amendment of the Constitution (1913), the election of state legislatures to the Senate was indirect.
