Sonic the Hedgehog is a 2020 action-adventure comedy film based on Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise. Jeff Fowler (in his feature-directing debut) directed the film, which was written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey star in the film, which also features James Marsden and Tika Sumpter. It’s the first in a planned series of Sonic the Hedgehog films. Sonic the Hedgehog (voiced by Schwartz) links up with local town sheriff Tom Wachowski (Marsden) to retrieve his lost rings and escape the nefarious scientist Dr. Robotnik in this short (Carrey).

The idea for a Sonic movie started in the 1990s, but it didn’t get off the ground until Sony Pictures bought the rights in 2013. Sega Sammy’s Japanese studio Marza Animation Planet collaborated on the project, and Fowler was brought in to direct in 2016. In 2017, Paramount Pictures bought the project after Sony placed it on hold. The majority of the actors had signed on by August 2018, and primary filming took place in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island during September and October of that year. After the unfavorable response to the initial trailer in 2019, the film’s release was postponed for three months in order to remodel Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog premiered on the Paramount Pictures lot on January 25, 2020, and was distributed in theatres on February 14, 2020, in the United States. Critics gave the film mixed reviews, praising the Sonic character and the performances of Marsden and Carrey but criticizing the film’s perceived lack of ambition and excessive product placements. In the United States and Canada, the film set the record for the biggest opening weekend for a video game film. It was the sixth highest-grossing film of 2020 and the highest-earning video game film adaptation of all time in North America, grossing $319.7 million globally. On April 8, 2022, a sequel titled Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be released.

Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog with superhuman speed, is pursued by a tribe of echidnas for his abilities on a distant planet. Longclaw the Owl, his protector, provides him with a bundle of rings that unlock gateways to other planets. She uses one to transport him to Earth while staying behind to keep the echidnas at bay.

Sonic lives a secret life near Green Hills, Montana, ten years later, yet he longs to meet pals. He idolises the local sheriff, Tom Wachowski, whom he refers to as “Donut Lord,” and his veterinarian wife, Maddie, whom he refers to as “Pretzel Lady,” despite the fact that the couple is planning to relocate to San Francisco, as Tom, bored with the lack of action in Green Hills, plans to accept a position with the San Francisco Police Department.

Sonic, while playing baseball alone one night, becomes enraged by his loneliness and begins sprinting in a circle at high speeds, unwittingly creating an electromagnetic pulse that causes a large-scale power outage across the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Robotnik, an eccentric roboticist and scientific prodigy, is unwillingly enlisted by the US Department of Defense to determine the cause. Sonic flees from his underground home, but Tom finds him in his shed and inadvertently kills him with a tranquilizer dart, forcing Sonic to drop his bag of rings through a portal to the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco instead of the “mushroom world” he was planned to visit. When approached by Robotnik, who wrongly names Tom a domestic terrorist, a hesitant Tom offers to help Sonic, and the two depart. Slowly, the two become friends, with Tom empathizing with Sonic’s need for a true companion. Sonic makes a bucket list, and Tom assists him in crossing off various items as they travel.

Robotnik investigates one of Sonic’s quills after recovering it and learns it has an almost infinite quantity of electrical energy. He decides to kidnap Sonic in order to use him as a source of energy for his robots. Sonic and Tom argue as he tracks them down about Tom’s plans to leave Green Hills, which Sonic opposes. Sonic and Tom manage to fend off multiple Robotnik-sent robotic chase drones until Sonic is critically injured at the end of the conflict. When Tom arrives in San Francisco, he takes him to Maddie, who takes him to her sister Rachel’s house to be treated. While Tom explains their dilemma to her, Sonic receives a new pair of red sneakers from Jojo, Maddie’s niece, to replace his wrecked ones. The party quickly makes its way to the pyramid’s roof and recovers the rings. Sonic is forced to fend off Robotnik’s drones and use one of his rings to send Tom and Maddie back to Green Hills in order to protect them when Robotnik comes, flying an advanced attack hovercraft powered by the quill.

During the creation of DIC Entertainment’s television show Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog in 1993, work on a cinematic adaptation of the Sonic the Hedgehog video games began. Michealene Risley, who helped license Sonic for Adventures as the newly recruited consumer products director, worked with many Hollywood producers. Following the commercial and critical failures of the Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter films, Sega of America CEO Tom Kalinske was leery of tarnishing the brand. Despite Kalinske’s reservations, Sega was excited. Sega signed a development arrangement with MGM and Trilogy Entertainment Group in August 1994, with Pen Densham serving as executive producer.
